We are SO GLAD they caught someone so quickly!
In the Mississippi Delta, a mayoral candidate for Clarksdale named Marco McMillian was brutally murdered. He also happened to be openly gay. The Sheriff's department has just announced that Lawrence Reed, 22, was just charged in the death of Marco.
It all started on Tuesday when someone crashed Marco's SUV into another car on Highway 49, but Marco wasn't in the car. In fact, Marco was already dead, and his body was found near the Mississippi River levee on Wednesday morning — but the cause of death has not been made public.
Like we said, Marco was the first openly gay man to be a viable candidate for public office in Mississippi. He had the credentials and the backings to actually pull it off too.
We can't help but wonder if the cause of death is being kept under wraps because it was a hate crime. We know not everyone in Mississippi is misinformed and intolerant of gay rights, but the news lately is making us worry more for the state than we thought we needed to before.
Either way, it's so sad. He was a good man, and would've been a good leader for Clarksdale.
Hopefully our love-loving friends in the South will stand up and speak out for Marco. Take action, loud and proud!! Staying silent and neutral only serves the oppressors' hatred.
