“Oz the Great and Powerful” is all smoke and no mirrors, no fantasy, just effects without affect. To be honest, more like Oz the Amiable and Un-threatening. The best, funniest Oz thing I've read lately is DA YELLER BRICK ROAD, a revisionist telling of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Uncle Remus. The conceit is it was originally by Remus (who didn't exist) and then "borrowed and cleaned-up" by Baum. Hilarious and charming. All that "Oz the Great and Powerful" is not.

Can someone explain to me how there is a prequal to a movie about a fictional place? At the end of the Wizard of Oz Doroty wakes up from a dream and finds Oz is not real. What is this movie based off of?

All actors sign on for sequels in every movie now… She hasn't revealed anything. And it won't get a sequel because it's not going to make a profit on its 200m budget.

As much I disliked this film, I think a different director would make a sequel really fun, I'd also really like to see the Good Witch of the North involved! She wasn't in the original film and I'd love to see how she would fit in, as she is in the book and is the one who greets Dorothy in Oz rather than Glinda.
