Your furniture, carpets, car interior etc will take a beating, kids are messy and no matter how much you watch them and teach them, they still will make mistakes and make messes that they shouldn't be. My advice is once your child starts walking, remove all of your valuables that you don't want destroyed. Kids throw things, they spill things, they cut things, they color and draw on things they shouldn't and so that would be my advice, take out your nice things that are expensive. Cover your couches with a blanket, or get leather couches that can be washed off. Believe me, you will be surprised at how much damage a small toddler can do, especially a mischievous one.
They'll do damage if left alone for too long. Worry when they're quiet, lol, as opposed to not quiet. Organized messy activities keep them busy. I did the opposite, and didn't move my essentials apart from things that could cause harm or be swallowed. I taught her the word 'no' while popping something else into the tot's hands simultaneously that they COULD play with. Imagine the start of a wail, and then silence as they peruse their new object.
