American Idol Finalist Sanjaya Sings For Spare Change In NYC Subway Stations!

Oh, how the mighty have fallen!
Last time we checked in with Sanjaya Malakar, the American Idol talent was debuting in a delightful off-Broadway musical!
Hold on to your hairpieces because, if you thought that role was off-Broadway, his new gig will blow your mind!
These days, the former Idol finalist sings oldies in NYC subway stations for spare change! And he cut his hair, too!
“[Sanjaya] was singing (Sittin’ on) the Dock of the Bay. A handful of people did double takes. The guy’s still a decent singer!”
Ugh! We love Otis Redding as much as the next guy, but this is tragic!
New York is an expensive city and we don't imagine playing for handouts at the First Avenue L station is a lucrative career choice!
Hopefully Sanjaya doesn't literally become a starving artist!

He also works as a bartender at a bar called Percy's on 13th and A.
Why do you act surprised? He does not have a record deal or win idol?
Even most idol winners go back to regular jobs because they don't hit.
that show is a joke…the only two that are talented are Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood…the rest are no better than high school talent acts…and to think more people vote for those stupid people on that show, but cannot get out to vote for the president of the US…americans are idiots…not all, but most…that is why our country is in the crapper…just sayin…
Good for him; he's got his regular restaurant/bartender job & still striving for STARDOM!
A lot of young singers do this….good experience
Re: Barbara – Thank you I agree!!
The only talented person to come from American Idol is Adam Lambert. The rest are medicore or giving BJ to stay famous. Very sad. I guess it's better than being third world.
Re: Setareh – Heck no. There are plenty of alums who are just as talented as Adam like Kelly, Carrie, Chris Daughtry, JHud, etc.
'how the mighty have fallen'. wow. how kind and gentle. hypocrite.
your comment was mean-spirited, i think because you are. i thought you have changed. so what if he is down on his luck, did he commit a crime? rob people? killed? no! he's trying to get by and you had to spit on him while he's still on the ground…mean mean mean! this is why i love jennifer aniston even more…i hope you change for the better and for real this time.
Why shit on him, he seems about as famous as you. At least he is fully dressed!
Why would you say he was mighty? He was just Sanjaya and I liked/like him. He's doing what he has to do to survive. He might not have been the best singer on the program but he sings well, much better than a lot of people. He has talent. Why pick on him because he never made it to be a star? I don't understand it. How many people, no matter how talented, DO make it? And if they do make it, how long do they shine? The entertainment world is geared for future failure. It takes a special kind of inner strength to be rejected on a public level. Leave Sanjaya alone. I hope he is happy, that's all that matters.
Wish you the best Sanjaya!! Money is money.
I know someone who clears $100k a year busking in the Subway. It's all sponsored by the MTA too. It's not begging for spare change, it's performing to a few thousand people and hour. It's good exposure and people make good money doing it.
I don't see anything wrong with it…great experience.
Not everyone can have a successful movie/tv/singing career and win multiple awards like Jennifer Hudson or have a film made about your life, star on Broadway, and win a Grammy like Fantasia Barrino. The good thing is, he's still out there and hasn't given up on his dream. Maybe someone will see this and give him a break. But a lot of them went back to a regular life.
You might see Fantasia singing at the next subway stop.
He doesn't deserve to be a star. He was to big for his britches. When he was still famous a governor of a state asked him for an autograph. This no talent didn't recognize the governor and TURNED DOWN HIS REQUEST FOR AN AUTOGRAPH. Once he was told who it was, he then gave him one. But for you or me, he was too big to give an autograph to.
