Matt Lauer's NBC Defense Called Into Question!

matt lauer defense called into question

We recently heard that Matt Lauer was far from culpable in Ann Curry's dismissal from the Today show.

In fact, NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke even said Lauer offered to resign if it would mean helping the show! According to Burke, Matt said:

"If you think the show’s better off without me, let me know, and I’ll get out of the way."

Doesn't exactly sound like a pushy, selfish co-host to us! But did he really say it?

It looks like Burke had every reason to help Matt save face- 25 million reasons to be exact! He was directly involved in negotiating the host's lucrative new four-year contract last year.

And since he was stuck paying the money anyway, was he just protecting his investment? Not to mention the fact that as CEO, Burke wasn't exactly helpless when it came to saving Ann's job!

Further, according to inside sources, Matt told Burke all about the article well before it was written- enough time for them to cook up this image of a magnanimous martyr who offered his own job to save Ann's!

So what really happened? Only they know for sure, but we're just not sure we're buying this whole redemption angle. Not Today anyway.

Not sure what the big deal is about him. He's gotten increasingly less popular so why renew his contract. His on-air attitude is kinda haughty.

Ann curry is to soft for the anchor job! she was ok for a one on interview on delicate subjects! but I think and feel she does her best work on location!! I never cared for as co-anchor, she is why I stopped watching!!

Re: Kimmie – The issue is not whether Ann Curry was good or bad. It was about how poorly NBC handled the situation, publicly humiliating her in front of millions of viewers that NBC has now lost. And Matt Lauer is anything but innocent in this debacle. Matt didn't want Ann in the position so he didn't make the effort to create the chemistry and/or to help mentor Curry into successfully filling the position. She is an accomplished journalist most experienced in news and feature stories but she was not without the skills to became a host/anchor if given the chance. Time wounds all heels, so it's only a matter of time before Matt gets the boot.
NBC is nothing but if not consistent in how poorly they handle HR matters and treat their employees. Changes are due at the very top of this company but until then viewers can hold NBC accountable by tuning out.
