Girls’ Christopher Abbott Has Left The Show! Artistic Differences With Lena Dunham To Blame!

| Filed under: TV NewsLena Dunham

christopher abbott lena dunham departure

GirlsChristopher Abbott — ahem, the adorable and kind-hearted Charlie aka Allison Williams’ love interest — has left the show! And just as things were starting to get inneresting, too!

But why the sudden departure? Apparently, he and the HBO show’s creator Lena Dunham couldn’t agree on his character’s storyline.

But is this dramz really to blame?!

A source revealed:

“They’ve just started work on Season 3, and Chris is at odds with Lena… He didn’t like the direction things are going in, which seems a bit odd since the show put him on the map.”

Despite the show’s third season, currently in production, Chris' rep also confirmed:

“[Chris] is grateful for the experience of collaborating with Lena, Judd[Apatow], and the entire ‘Girls’ cast and crew, but right now he’s working on numerous other projects and has decided not to return to the show.”

We. Are. Devastated.

DEVASTATED. Wake us up when it's over.

Somewhere somebody cares. All I know is that this guy killed 75% of his future opportunities. Who wants to work with a DB like that guy.

whattttttttttttttttttt! no! He was one of my favorite characters on the show. I agree, the direction Lena is taking is awful - season 2 was terrible. Wasn't funny at all, I hated her character (she was incredibly annoying and irritating). Not happy about this.

I actually liked his character and his storyline with Allison. It was the first time in fiction that I saw a couple where one clearly loved the other more, and we witnessed a girl stating that she was with her boyfriend just because she liked to be in a relationship. That type of honesty doesn't come along often in television… Good luck dude.

Ugh, this is crap. And they managed to make this incredible transition with his character. Boooooo!

Seriously?! He was one of the favorites from the start! Wow. I am shocked. He's a great actor by the way. Hope he does well. Still, I'm shocked.

good for him! it's clear he didn't liked to kiss asses! this show is famous only because is ridicolous not because it has amazing writing. He surely understood Lena is crazy!

i think he did the right thing. Lena often tries to "challenge societal and stereotypical norms" (ie: sometimes its the woman who doesn't want to commit) but how his character almost instinctively dove in head first in a relationship with someone who cared very little about him was unbelieveable. Lena stresses he was a good STABLE guy who was also relatively successful and headed a company Marnie knew nothing about. I often wondered how that would relate to his consistent and easy manipulation by an obviously selfish girl who treated him blatantly callous. It was the one storyline I found annoying.

I don't blame him the second season sucked big time. I can tell by how she acts in interviews that she is one of those twats that its her way and I don't give a shit what you think.I was really looking forward to see Marnie and Charlie's relationship take the next level.

Lena has a huge ego. She thinks she represents women everywhere

Since when do actors get to direct what their characters do? That is for the show creator and writers do. Maybe if you are Meryl Streep, you could actually have "creative differences" and leave. If you are an actor whose career has just been kick-started by a particular show, I don't think it is your prerogative to dictate where the character goes.

Yeah season 2 sucked since she has been directing. you can tell she had too much to do with the story line…She's nude in every episode! Yikes .. It's like she trying way tooooo hard & helps if you make it he gym once and a while… Gezzzz give it up Lena! I think the show has one to her head & it's been going downhil since! So I can see why he left. That story line with him gretting back together with the girl one the only good part left :( . Lena yucks!!!

Poor widdle baby. His character is ringing too true to his real-life personality. This guy is BITCH and probably hates how accurately the show is portraying bitches like him. Why else would he leave? His job is to ACT, not direct. He owes a lot to Lena. What an ungrateful little worm he is.

And all you bitches who think season 2 sucked, it didn't. I feel like I'm the only person on this planet with a brain sometimes.

  15. 15

this is horrible… The show isn't going to be good without him. I feel that his character was getting a bigger role and now he isn't even coming back to finish it. :( i wish they would make a compromise. And yes some of the episodes in season two sucked but not all of them. Hopefully, this won't ruin the show completely.

Since when do actors get say on where the storylines go? Leave that to the writers and the producers. Your job is to act.

    Re: Sasha
i find it interesting that you would infer that because of your love of this show you have a brain. the show, i find, is lacking in its second season for a plethora of reasons. There is a general lack of character development (season 2 is a longer, denser version of season 1) no one has grown, no one has an ounce of self actualization. For some reason people in the 24-29 age group confuse self obsession with self actualization; because you tweet your whereabouts, likes, or thoughts doesn't make you introspective, it makes you self centered and shallow. these characters have nothing but first world problems that mirror that of soap operas and other forms of reality television. They don't have real problems so they create ones (ie: Hannah's new found neurosis, she had this "e-book deal" for quite some time and now all of a sudden she's having a MASSIVE breakdown). So, I've said all this to say this: you're claim at having a brain because you have a preference for one dimensional shows that are in no way stimulating intellectually (what do these "Girls" teach their viewers except to be self absorbed leeches) or even mildly entertaining (no growth of characters or change in scenery) is more telling of the kind of "brain" you actually have.

I mean this second season was HORRIBLE! I don't know what was going on. There was no plot. It was just sad little 'vignettes'

Devastation no more! Check out Chris Abbott in this really cool short film. If he left the show to pursue more projects like this then thumbs up to him!

I'm sad he's leaving. But I'll still watch the show. I would be more upset if Adam Driver left. He makes the show for me!
