    You are sorely misguided, sir.

Right on Perez. I was confused by that quote as well.

  3. VB says – reply to this

You're actually so ignorant. So you're saying that a feminist can't wear skimpy clothes? And that a feminist can't get married? People like you perpetuate the stereotype that to be a feminist you have to not shave your legs and burn your bra. Ridiculous.

  4. 4

um, ok. who are you to say anything you wrote a post criticizing demi moore for not shaving her legs?

  5. 5

If you believe in gender equality, you're a feminist. The end. No ifs, ands, or buts. Beyonce is surely a feminist the term is constantly being put to mean something else but in the end that's the core of what it means.

  6. feminist fan of yours says – reply to this

I appreciate what you're trying to say, but you really are stigmatizing "feminism" today, and aren't accurately representing what that word means.

Feminism has evolved a lot, and today it's generally considered to reflect the belief that women and men deserve to be treated equally. That means women don't have to be confined to any expectations (that includes your definition of you think feminism means).

So while encouraging women to bow down to their man may arguably cross a line… wanting someone to put a ring on it, or dresssing sexy does not mean you aren't a feminist.

    Nowadays Feminist women

Third-wave feminists such as Elle Green often focus on "micro-politics", and challenge the second wave's paradigm as to what is, or is not, good for women.[4][5][6][7]

Proponents of third-wave feminism claim that it allows women to define feminism for themselves by incorporating their own identities into the belief system of what feminism is and what it can become through one's own perspective. In the introduction to the idea of third-wave feminism in Manifesta, authors Jennifer Baumgardner and Amy Richards suggest that feminism can change with every generation and individual:

Yay! Perez. You said it - and you said it perfectly. So proud of you. : )

I was with you until you pulled Beth Ditto out of your a** to call her a modern feminist. An uneducated attention seeking entertainer raging against conformity is not a feminist. That's just a sad cliche.

I was so sure you were going to go with an educated woman who's actually made a real contribution to society. A woman who blazed trails not conforming to male rules on how to succeed. A woman who didn't completely abandon being a woman to succeed w/o having to hyper-sexualize themselves . Not Beth m'f'ing Ditto!!! I'm disappointed, Perez. smh.

    Thank you Perez!!!

Beyonce is a modern day crowd pleaser, not run of the mill crowd pleaser, but she will do what it takes to make the money, say what it takes and use her voice.
She is what everyone wants her to be. Feminist no. But feminism is treading right now, so she claims it as her own

Interesting. I'm not totallyon board with you, because a lot of what you promote us unhealthy for women, but you show effort at understanding. You should bring this aspect out of yourself more often.

Re: VB – He's saying the problem is that she is hyper-sexualizing herself to sell records. And atering to the base instincts of men to get what you want makes you anything BUT a feminist? You think if she got up their in shook her a** in something tasteful, she'd sell as many records?

  13. EDub says – reply to this

Why do we need to put different kinds of women into boxes? I think in many ways she is a modern feminist. She is a strong, successful, independent woman and she knows what she wants and strives to get it. Yes, maybe she is over-sexualized occasionally, but she uses it to her advantage and is claiming her femininity as her own. So don't be the Feminist Police.

  14. Mhs says – reply to this

A feminist is a woman who strives for equal rights between men and women. Nothing more and less.

  15. 15

feminism is treading right now, so she claims it as her own

  16. melissa says – reply to this

YES. I'm not saying a degree makes me a feminist, but I not only live being a feminist, but I studied Feminism for 4 years, and I can tell you - women need to support each other and stick together, and learn from each other. I just don't know what good saying "Bow Down Bitches" does for women's causes.

And I'M A HUGE BEYONCE FAN. She inspires me in many ways, but I was personally let down with the lyrics in her new song. My thoughts - not cool.

Can she still be a feminist? Yes. But I think she's a human being and possibly made an error with the lyrics. And I seriously hope she doesn't walk around asking women to "bow down" to her. My thoughts are no, and she's stuck in the hype of needing to put out ridiculous lyrics to stand out.

  17. @v@ says – reply to this

Appearing 'fierce' doesn't necessarily make one a feminist. I'm sure she is a feminist here and there, and not so much in other areas. You just be yourself, and do what works for you, and/or your partner with an eye to improvement if needed.

  18. VB says – reply to this

    Re: Seriously?
So what if she hyper-sexualises herself to sell records? She can still be a feminist. People today are still stuck on what feminism used to mean, and not what it has evolved into.

He is not saying that feminists cannot get married he is saying the feminists would not be obsessed with becoming someone's wife. Seriously… in the song it sounds like the guy does not want to get married and Beyonce is saying if you don't marry me… I will fool around with other guys.

  21. rockpunk says – reply to this

Re: VB – You are fucking ignorant. If ALL a women does is wear skimpy slutty clothing- she is anti-feminist. She has NOTHING to offer except her looks. Feminists would show women are capable of so much more than looking good in barely anything. She has the vocabulary of a 10-year-old and her music is sheer garbage.

  22. guest says – reply to this

    Perez. Shut your mouth.
If Lady Gaga (a woman you love) said this you wouldn't question it. It's obvious you play favorites with celebs. I'm a huge fan of gaga and you basically described a few things that her and gaga have in common. Lady Gaga is a well known feminist and you've never questioned her. You literally like to pick and chose who you attack and who you don't. You're a bully. You never change.
and stop using your kid to gain publicity. You adopted a kid and nobody gives a shit which should say something about your level of fame.

  23. DigiDai says – reply to this

    Ha…love it.

  24. Rinny says – reply to this

Being a feminist does NOT mean you have to cover up… or can't want a marriage. Sigh. You are the one who needs an education about what being a feminist means.

  25. 25

oh boy, i think you just STUPIDFIED yourself big time, perez. A modern feminist does what she wants and does not conform to anybody's rules nor standards, including those feminists'!

  26. Adnelle says – reply to this

Aww Perez… Perez BB no… Perez, why?!?!

"Beyonce isn't a feminist because she wants women to bow down/ wants a ring on it/ wears skimpy clothing"? PEREZ, DO YOU KNOW MUCH PATRIARCHY YOU ARE PROJECTING? Being a Feminist means that women can do WHATEVER THE FUCK THEY WANT. Feminists can love pink if they want to, Feminists can be house wives if they want to, Feminists can be as GIRLY and as SEXY as THEY FUCKING WANT, BECAUSE /THEY/ WANT TO.

I'm also a HUGE Beth Ditto fan so I will talk on that a bit. I found it so odd that you said Beyonce isn't a feminist because she dresses skimpy (Also, Skimpy is a matter of opinion) When Beth is Notrious for not giving a FLYING FUCK about covering her beautiful fat rolls. That girl gets quite "Skimpy" herself.

But for real, you trying to project that Feminists have to ACT a certain way, TALK a certain way and DRESS a certain way is Misogynistic of you.

  27. Jay says – reply to this

I think she may believe in feminism, however, she is doing a fabulous job at keeping women where they are as sexual products and unequal. There is nothing wrong with expressing sexuality, but if you want to be seen as more then you need to rise above that. I'm not saying she is not smart and doesn't stand for strong women. I'm saying as a role model for women, especially young women, she is doing a poor job at expressing the fact of not needing hyper-sexualism in order to be a strong woman. I do not normally comment on things and most of the time I disagree with Perez, but he was on mark with this one. I see where he was going. I am I guess a "modern feminist" and I do not go unclothed to get my point across. I dress how I wish and shave my legs. I am a strong beautiful woman and refuse to use my sexuality to get what I want. So it is possible to keep some clothes on to get your point across.

  28. francesca says – reply to this

That’s just stupid. I'm a MASSIVE fan of the queen and because she is simply just so amazing, phenomenal, outstanding and on a different level people feel the need to pick on little things just because it’s hard for them to accept it. She gets a lot of shit for the fact that she didn’t go to college, for example what you wrote, “We love her, but she needs some schooling!” Why the hell does it matter if she went to college or not?! Why would she need to when she has the breath-taking talent that she does and she could just go out there into the world and make something of herself and live out her dreams. Well she did do that, and now look at her. In “Beyoncé-The B'DAY Documentary” she says “I know who I am, at 26, that is a beautiful thing. I think that’s the best thing to know, and if you go to college, and if your educated, and you know all the theory’s, and you know all of the answers, that’s one thing but when you know who you are, that’s the beginning of wisdom”. I couldn’t agree more. She says more truthful and inspirational things, also listen to the things her band members/dancers say about how she has changed their lives, change the way the feel about themselves, changed the way they look at the world, the things she has taught them and how she has made them feel so damn sexy! Take a look here:

  29. francesca says – reply to this

I agree with what she said in that interview, she is a modern day feminist. She is so supportive of women and is so passionate about women being equal to men. She encourages and inspires women every day. For ONE of the many examples, in a short film called "Beyoncé: Year of 4" ( she says in it “being a young woman I want to set the example that is possible, for us to own our own businesses and own our own record labels. Sometimes we don’t reach for the stars, sometimes we are satisfied with what people tell us were supposed to be satisfied with, and I’m just not going for it”. She most defiantly inspires me!
Also you wrote on your website she is telling people to “bow down to their husbands” in ‘Bow Down/I Been On’. That’s not what she is saying actually. One of the lines is “But don’t think I’m just his little wife”, yeah that’s really sending the message for women to bow down to their husbands isn’t it. Lolzzzzzzzzzzzz!
So don’t be saying oh yeah because Beyoncé wears some sexy clothes in some photo shots (and can I just add she is the classiest and sexiest woman in the game. She can still be classy when being sexy unlike most women in this industry who are just slutty when being sexy. Oh and they are still not even as sexy as B) and because she is married she isn’t a feminist.

  30. 30

    She's a moron.

  31. apple pie says – reply to this

Well said and Finally you spoke the truth Perezita.

A feminist does not wear skimpy attire ALL the time to promote a song or album.

  32. 32

Uh-oh. Did someone not buy Perez Jr. a birthday present? Also, I think that only women can fully understand feminism. Sex is a form of power and some men do not want women to have any form of power like one that is as liberating, mesmerizing, and controlling as a woman's sexuality.
Feminism is about women supporting one another in their choices and decisions. It is also about equal opportunities. If a woman has been with a man for 5 years and he is toying with her in regards to commitment then she should leave him and say "If you liked it then you should have put a ring on it."
Perez, like others, completely missed out on the point of her songs. Are we having another Lady Gaga situation?

  33. 33

Based on Perez's misguided definition of feminism then Madonna is certainly not a feminist with her flashing her ass in concert. And what about Lena Dunham? She gets naked on the show all of the time and the story lines do not fall on hard core feminist values.
This attack is personal and doesn't hold water.

  34. 34

That's the most intelligent thing you've ever said, P!

I am SO impressed with you! Had no idea you had it in ya!

    Well said. Well done.

I don't usually agree with Perez but I do feel he hit it right on the head this time. It's unfortunate that Beyonce( not the Queen) feels she has to talk like a thug and dress like a hooker in order to keep her career on top. A strong talent would not have to stoop so low. Her act has become repetitive and now she is trying to pump it up by making her act more about a lack of clothes and discusting lyrics. There's plenty of that out there right now…we don't need more.

Every woman has their attitudes and their ups and down…..this was more than likely to be a down moment from all the coments that was said about her….. bow down is just the way she expressed her feelings… single ladies was not an example of what you wrre talking about

  39. @v@ says – reply to this

Women should be free to be who they want to be, and not have to tow some party line one way or the other. Feminism served to break a lot of little boxed in scenarios that needed to be gotten rid of. If you want to fly, fly…and if you want to raise babies, raise babies and everything else in between with no judgements from society if you pay your own way.

  46. val says – reply to this

Beyoncé is one of the dumbest, uneducated entertainers since Pdiddy came on the scene. Her interviews are hard to watch, she tries to use big words and doesn't have a clue what it means. Role Model….for who? Sad. money doesn't buy class or brains. keep showing your "thick" body to sell records because that's all you got.
As the saying goes…beauty fades…dumb is forever.

  49. 49

Thank you Perez you said it! Feminists MODERN OR OLD FASHIONED don't have to cater to sexist attitudes of men to get respect. Beyonce is insulting our intelligence when she tries to gloss over the very salacious sexualized nature of many of her pop songs. ALSO by promoting a SOFT DRINK such as Pepsi she is selling out. Soda pop is bad for the body and leaches vitamins and minerals from growing children's bones. She doesn't care. She is twisting everything around so justify selling out.

  50. 50

  51. Quinette says – reply to this

There are actually multiple waves of feminism, one wave in fact, embraced dressing to show off the female form. Feminism simply means, supporting equal rights for women. We don't need to get into all the specifics of what YOU think feminism means. Beyonce in my opinion, is a shining example of feminism. She is an uber successful artist who is able to call her own shots, a wife, a mother, and so much more. Don't get caught up in your interpretations of feminism because feminism is not static, and it is not finite.

  52. Quinette says – reply to this

There are actually multiple waves of feminism, one in fact that embraces the wearing of "Skimpy" clothes because wearing those clothes finally gave women choice in their attire. It is not your job to define feminism, although, quite simply it is the belief that women should be equal, and I think that Beyonce has reflected that opinion. Beyonce is a shining example of women's empowerment, she is an uber successful artist, a wife, a mother, a business woman, a humanitarian, and so much more. The fact that you are questioning, and debasing such a successful female, makes me question your stance on feminism. Don't subscribe to the stereotypes about feminism, we aren't all bra burning, men hating people. Feminism is not static, and it is not finite.

  53. 53

BULLSHIT. in one of my Women & Gender Studies classes at college it was stressed VERY much that real feminism means a woman should be free to do whatever a man's legally allowed to do. MEn tell each other to bow down if they consider themselves the boss.. skimpy clothes? it's all about sex. the male equivalent is like an athlete. using one's body– do whatever the hell you want with it. attract AS many as possible. market it all. doing what you want with your body. and yeah! so she's one that wants marriage. i'll never understand it but i'm sure for a lot of homosexual people who want it too and i sure bet they want a ring on it. so why cant she if she changes her mind? lots of "bootylicious" people have i've realized– fine with the single thing until they wanna mark somebody theirs. in a way her jay z union, mega money and fame, was also conquest– a traditionally male thing. now i hate most of this shit but hell. if a boy can and be called masculine, a girl should and be called a feminist. think of all the women WHO STILL CANT DRESS THAT SKIMPY IN THE WORLD. SING WHAT THE HELL THEY WANT. BE LIKE THAT AND STILL GET THEIR OWN MONEY, MARRIED, AND DEMAND RESPECT. pop stars, male and female REPRESENT what it means to be totally in charge of one's sexuality

  54. Come On says – reply to this

O_O seems like I agree with Perez! Well thought out!

Well, it seems twisting the concept of feminism to your needs seems to be the new thing: Taylor Swift did it, not Beyonce is joining… Just because a woman is claming to be a feminist doesn't mean that the rest of the world has to agree, and women certainly don't have to support other women if they don't agree with what they are standing for!

Beyonce seems like a strong woman, and maybe she aspires to helping and inspiring other women, but her messages are not always femnist.
And boy did she use her sexuality and good looks in the music videos. She can perfectly well think that it's part of being a woman, and that woman should use all the tools at their disposal, just be honest about it. Don't hide it under a fake banner.

  55. 55

actually a modern feminist, an old-fashioned feminist, a true feminish, what ever kind of feminist is one who believes that women and men are equal. nothing more, nothing less. people make it to be different things and to certain extent that is completely fine. a feminist can be a stay-at-home-mom, an atheist, a christian, a muslim, a boss at a huge company, a sex symbol, a stripper, a wife, a mother - WHATEVER THE WOMAN WANTS TO BE. She can dress as she wants and "skimpy outfits" don't make her any less a feminist. All that matters is the cause.

  69. Sophie says – reply to this

As a man, you have no right to say what a feminist is or isn't. A feminist is allowed to wear skimpy clothing and want to get married. Feminism NOT about telling women what they should or shouldn't do. This video was extremely ignorant and misguided. I can "have pretty hair" and wear makeup and want a boyfriend and r just as much of a feminist as I am while not shaving my legs and enjoying being single. The fact that Beyonce is a "pop sat with pretty hair" does not stop her from being a feminist.

  70. Jane says – reply to this

Perez. You're an idiot. Not only are you perpetuating the stigma associated with femenism but you clearly don't understand beyonce's message. In single ladies she is telling her ex an men in general that if they like who they're with, they should put a ring on it and I they can't get serious shell be gone. That sounds pretty independent to me. The fact that she will not be held back by someone who will not take their relationship seriously. She will find someone who will value her. Second bow down was a song to her haters not her fans not other women. She even says don't think I'm just his little wife. Lastly, she can dress however the hell she wants. She is using her strengths to her advantage and her body is one of them. That has nothing to do with feminism. Also her stage attire is much different than what she wears on a daily basis. She wears "skimpy" outfits or leotards because she needs the leverage to perform intricate dance moves. She has even said that she would never walk out of her house in a leotard. She is always clothed up pretty well and always carries herself with class and elegance. With much more than Rihanna can, giving lap dances to fans and exposing her actual nipples. Please, you're the one who needs schooling along with everyone who is admiring you for your "well thought out and deep" insight.
