Beyoncé And Jay-Z's Cuban Vacation Being INVESTIGATED?! Republicans Think They Violated SANCTIONS To Travel There!

| Filed under: Legal MattersPolitikBeyonceBarack ObamaJay Z

beyonce jay z cuba investigation

Uh-oh!

We guess this could actually be a pretty serious problem!

What was supposed to be a happy, fifth anniversary vacation to Cuba for Beyoncé and Jay-Z has apparently prompted some serious backlash for the celebrity couple…and now, possibly even an investigation from the Obama administration!

That is, if two Florida Republicans have it their way!

As we've reported, questions have arisen over how Bey and Jay were allowed to travel to the communist country, which is illegal under the United States' fifty-year old embargo on it, and Former House Foreign Affairs Committee chairwoman Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and her colleague Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart have now reportedly sent a letter to the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, requesting an investigation be opened to determine whether or not the pair violated any sanctions with their trip.

The letter reads:

We write to express concern and to request information regarding the highly publicized trip by U.S. musicians Beyoncé Knowles-Carter (Beyoncé) and Shawn Carter (Jay-Z) to Cuba. We would like to respectfully request, within all applicable rules and guidelines, information regarding the type of license that Beyoncé and Jay-Z received, for what purpose, and who approved such travel. […]

Cuba’s tourism industry is wholly state-controlled; therefore, U.S. dollars spent on Cuban tourism directly fund the machinery of oppression that brutally represses the Cuban people.

Despite the clear prohibition against tourism in Cuba, numerous press reports described the couple’s trip as tourism, and the Castro regime touted it as such in its propaganda.

Now, the only way for Americans to legally travel to Cuba is to be approved for a “people-to-people licences," AKA a visa that allows for educational or cultural exchanges between the countries!

It's POSSIBLE that the Obama administration allowed them to go under such conditions, but obviously, this a problem, due to the nature in which the trip has been publicized!

What do U think?? Should Beyoncé And Jay-Z's trip be investigated further??

It's sad that, with all the current issues plaguing America, this is what the government (in this case republicans) choose to focus on. FOCUS ON POVERTY IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY. FOCUS ON THE UNEMPLOYMENT. FOCUS ON THINGS THAT ARE REAL. Do I feel like their visit reinforces oppression in Cuba, NO. Dozens of tourists from all over the world go to Cuba. They don't support the oppression, no one does. Is money from tourism helping the Cuban people? Of course it is.

While it isn't illegal in my country to go to Cuba (and I honestly find it weird that it is forbidden), I think that if a country has specific laws, they must apply to anyone. They should be investigated because to me they should have the exact rights of other americans.

I think everyones missing the point.. Its not that they went to Cuba… Or agree with that system.. Or love Fidel for that matter… Americans have the right to be communist. The problem is that if we (the 99.9%) did it we would go to jail and be bankrupted, so in America I dont have the same 'rights' as the next guy? Or.. Are those for sale out in the open now? Oh.. One more thing no one mentions… The daily dollar spend limit by US Federal Law is $100/day. Think J spent that every hour!

Dumb and dumber. They have no loyalty to America. The America that made them rich off of their rap "music." So sad that they are so arrogant and dumb. Nobody on these comments has any clue or understanding of why we have an ongoing embargo on Cuba. How sad that our country is getting so dumb. Even if most of these commenters read about the cuban missile crisis, I doubt any of them would be smart enough to even understand it and it's LONG TERM implications.

Before Castro there was Batista. He allowed gambling, prositution, drugs, and the Mafia had fulll charge. He also tortured prisoners. The USA got a kickback. In comes Castro and kick out Batista, sent the Mafia packing, stop the other stuff. When Castro ask the USA for a import/outport trade to help get Cuba started on the right path, the USA said NO. Russia offered to help, and Castro said okay. Castro was not a commie, but it angered the USA because he accepted help from Russia. The reason no fly zone . We are only free to do certain things our elite leaders allow, rather Dems or Repub. a senator is anger because of how women and others are treated in Cuba, but look at the women's rights the GOP/tea party are taking away, and medicare for the poor especially cancer patients

this is hilarious! the USA never cease to amaze me in how truly ridiculous their government is. yes Cuba is a communist country- GET OVER IT! I study economics and Cuba spends more money on human welfare given their GDP than any other country in the world. They have high literacy levels, free healthcare, they live longer on average than Americans.
Yes there are things that need to change in their country but the embargo the USA supposedly still has in place for humanitarian purposes is hurting Cubans more than helping them.
It is disgusting the USA can still have in place the embargo on Cuba after what? 3-4 times the UN has demanded them to stop it.

I was in Cuba earlier this year, the people are so beautiful and its a shame they suffer because their government and the American government cant get over their differences.

  47. 47

They are simply grandstanding for their Cuban-American constituents, who all of you can thank for the continued embargo. These people have way more clout than they are entitled to IMO. Now go fix the sequester problem, I travel next month and if TSA does not have enough agents I will vote against every incumbent in the next election regardless of party and will email them as to why they will not get my vote.

  48. 48

Given that Bey's tour begins on April 15th, why not go to Cuba? The Bey publicity machine knew that this trip would be blogged and reported about all over the world. It's kinda interesting that Bey and J take mama Knowles with them for their "anniversary" vacation.

America is suppose to be free and we as the people are contained or confined in one country. If you are going on a trip with your wife then you only need a visa. No one should have to be investigated just for taking a trip. Republicans and Democrats goes out the country almost every year and they didn't get investigated. Dennis Rodman just went out he country and he didn't get investigated. LEAVE THEM ALONE THEY ARE AMERICANS AND THEY PAID FOR THE TRIP. LET IT REST!

Yeah they should absolutely be investigated! They've broken the law! I voted for Obama and support him in most points but if he had anything to do with enabling them to do this, he should catch a rash of shit in the media.

And as for you Canadians who just can't understand why anyone would want to enforce the embargo (or my fellow liberals), you need to pick up a book and read about the bloody revolution that divided my family and my country. Or read Yoanis Sanchez' blog to find out what's currently going on in the country.

Tourism does NOT help the Cuban people because all businesses are owned by the country and enrich the controllling and ONLY party - the communists. Private enterprise exists only in theory in Cuba and ownership of property as we have in the U.S. is a dream they haven't realized.

So, please, learn a little about the country you're visiting, Canooks, instead of just laying around their beaches getting hammered then celebrating how much you're helping Cubans.

  65. 65

These people suck! Those "republicans" you pointed out happen to be Cuban Americans who know of the atrocities that have gone on in Cuba for so long! Why do you think so many refugees try to get to the U.S.? Damn it people! Open your freakin eyes! Do you know women are beaten daily, citizens have little or no human rights! the harm is not by beyoce and jayz paying for their own trip to cuba…the harm is in the fact that it is ILLEGAL to travel to cuba if you are an American citizen. There is a law that states you cannot go to Cuba if you are an american citizen because the US has placed an embargo on that country because of the way they treat their citizens. So NO you cannot go to CUBA no matter WHO you are or how much MONEY you have…this just shows how stupid Beyonce and Jay z are and that they think they are above everyone else. All it showed me was how ill informed they are. By being there they are supporting how Cuba treats their people and in essence it's showing support of what they are doing to their people. It's not about communism being a threat to the US. It's about how a dictator has ruled that country for years and years and how their people in Cuba have been persecuted and their rights and freedoms have been taken away. Why do you think so many Cubans are willing to risk their lives to get into a crappy boat and try and make it to the US? It's because they are so desperate to leave their country they are willing to die. Re: eye roll

Re: karen – US citizens can't fly there legally from Mexico…it's still ILLEGAL it's just that Mexico have an embargo against cuba so they have flight there. It's all done on the down low. Americans fly to places like mexico or jamaica and can get a plane or boat to go to cuba. The cuban authorities don't stamp their passports because they know it's illegal for americans to be there so there will be no evidence of their entry to cuba. So no it's no legal for american citizens to fly there from mexico.

    PEREZ,

You are so far removed from your Cuban heritage you wouldn't even know why two famous americans traveling to cuba is wrong. All you see if that it's beyonce and Jay z. Is your mother a cuban immigrant? Ask her why she left Cuba if it's such a great place. Stop idolizing idiots like beyonce and jay z because it's just one idiot idolizing another idiot. Why state that the two people asking to investigate this issue are 'republicans'? What does it matter if they are republicans? What you should have seen is that they are both of cuban decent and are offended that two celebrities went to cuba without thought to what they were doing. Again celebrities thinking without thinking. By beyonce and jay z being in cuba it's showing their ignorance of the american laws in place for a reason. You may not agree with why these laws are still in place, but the fact still stands that they are and by going there they broke the law and should be punished for it.

Re: karen – US citizens CAN NOT fly legally to Cuba from Mexico. This is why the Cuban government doesn't stamp their passports. You can get there from Mexico but it's not legal.

Re: hilarious – The GOP/Tea Party are 'taking away women's rights'?? And you believe this becuuuuuzz someone told you that? Or a bunch of people repeated it a billion times until it seeped into your noggin?

Why don't use the brain God gave to use common sense, think for yourself, and do your own research. Right up until that point you mostly made sense…right up until that point…

Re: Ali – Wow… Just reading all your comments you're passing out for the most enlightened and educated one. What ever makes you think you can insult people, even if they had free education? What world do you live in? If you were really an "elite" like you pretend to be..; 1: You would not be on Perezhilton.com but on Wikipedia! 2. You would be humble and not say people here are not educated or commenting without thinking. I wish there were less people like you in the world, the world would truly be a better place!

Yes, very important… I want my elected officials discussing the intentions and whereabouts of Jay-z and Beyonce on their latest vacation while on the clock… I can see my tax dollars are really going to good use. Why doesnt the government just cut a check to the women at work in the break room?

I think a lot of you need to do some more reading on Cuba or speak to a Cuban if at all possible. The Castro Regime murdered thousands of people and stole businesses from Cubans by threat of murder to reap all of the profits for themselves. Those who opposed him were thrown into jail for years and forced to live in squalid conditions in these jails naked, in order to humiliate them into signing contracts giving themselves over to 'communism'. In a country like Cuba every cent goes to the state, period. Tourism money gets filtered through the Regime and maybe if they are lucky a couple of the people working at the resorts might get a tip from a wealthy tourist. The fact of the matter is that most people reading this story are missing the point, it is illegal to go to Cuba no matter your political affiliations, wealth or apparent ‘celebrity’ status. Jay Z and Beyoncé spent the trip going to expensive restaurants and smoking Cuban cigars, that trip was tourism full stop. For those of you who keep saying that they shouldn’t be investigated because other ‘celebrities’ have violated the embargo, I would suggest that you inform your government of other violators so that they can be persecuted as well because NO ONE is above the law.

I feel it is necessary to state that I am Canadian Liberal who is dating an American of Cuban decent, this is an issue that drives him crazy. He will never be able to go to his family’s country or see his family’s home because Che Guevara forced them off their property with an AK 47 and turned their home into a luxury private resort for his cronies. But its ok because Jay Z turned his drug money into a music career and then used it to fundraise for politics, thank god occupy wall street had such an impact on the lives of the 1%. I would like to think that Democrats in America are as disgusted by this as anyone else, if not more. If you are so sick of the ‘Republican fat cat’ behavior why are you not outraged that these self-styled Democrats are disregarding everything that your party stands for?

Re: JAMA – This is a reply from the heart. My parents were born and raised in Havana, both from middleclass families. They imigrated to the U.S.in 1961 with their families. Many of their young friends were not so lucky and came through a network called "Pedro Pan", they came without their parents to live in host families until their parents could join them. I am 48 years old-born in the U.S. I have only visited the place were my parents grew up and lived as children and teenagers in my imagination and dreams. As a family, none of us want to do so while the country is without human rights. Before Batista, Cuba was a free country. Fidel (and he is a communist and was when he took over), took advantage of the people's repression with Batista and used this for his gain. The people who followed Castro on false intentions (under the impression that he would make Cuba free again) were tortured and killed when they went against him after realizing he was a communist .They were tortured and killed with no trial or jury. Just simply walked to the wall and shot. I'm really surprised with Beyonce and Jay-Z. They are either really ignorant or think way too highly of themselves. Both are pretty bad in my book.

Re: Shocker – quaTotally agree with you.Seems to me that Americans don't have a problem paying taxes to their government and that money being used to bomb and kill
people around the world[while 40 million Americans don't have any medical ins. or coverage,3-4 million people lost their houses, billions are spent on army bases all over the world?],but they
see "red' if JZ[or me] spend few bucks in Cuba, even though most of that money goes towards
social programs-FREE housing,FREE medicare,FREE education, things that Americans can only dream about. In america you can talk all you want, call politicians names, bla, bla, bla, freedom of speech, but real power is with corporations,rich,politicians-not people. In Greek word "DEMOS' means people[democracy],but in biggest "democracy"in the world it is just a farce, people are just "paper pushers[ballots]for the rich and powerful!!!Look at yourself-Uriah heep
