The people have spoken! And apparently what they’re saying is they want to finally put an end to “war on drugs!”
Russell Simmons recently posted a letter to his website urging President Barack Obama to tweak his policies when it comes to throwing drug users behind bars, and he’s gotten PLENTY of support from some of Hollywood’s elite!
Talk about some serious star power!
The Def Jam co-founder and his band of all-star supporters say the biggest issue with the “war on drugs” is the amount of people being thrown in jail for nonviolent crimes such as drug use, and unless this number is reduced soon, our future looks pretty bleak:
"The greatest victims of the prison industrial complex are our nation’s children. Hundreds of thousands of children have lost a parent to long prison sentences for non-violent drug offenses, leaving these children to fend for themselves. Many of these children end up in the criminal justice system, which comes as no surprise as studies have shown the link between incarceration and broken families, juvenile delinquency, violence and poverty."
It’s always great to see celebrities fighting for a cause they believe in, but we can’t help but feel like they’re over-simplifying this issue.
There’s no doubt that the number of inmates in the prison system has increased over the past few decades, but this isn’t a problem that is going to fix itself overnight.
