And because the subject matter WAS extremely serious, showrunner Ryan Murphy obviously had to handle it delicately so that it did NOT seem like he was trivializing a complex, sensitive subject, which is probably why he decided to include very few musical numbers.
The performances that DID make the cut were emotional, yet simply orchestrated, and they provided a much needed break from the consistent tension.
