Selena Gomez Asked To Apologize For Wearing Bindi During MTV Movie Awards Performance!

selena gomez insult hindus bindi

As if dealing with her Justin Bieber split wasn’t enough, Selena Gomez is finding herself in some major hot water.

The triple threat is at the center of the dramz after performing at the MTV Movie Awards while wearing a Bollywood-style outfit paired with a bindi!

The Universal Society of Hinduism is demanding an apology from the starlet for what they believe was an insensitive getup.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed commented:

“The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance. It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol… It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed. Selena should apologise and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions.”

But they weren’t the only ones demanding Selenita feel bad about her actions.

Twitter users went after the singer as some posted messages like :

“Selena Gomez, take that bindi of (sic) your head, cultural appropriation is not cute.”

“@selenagomez Hi, leave Bindis for Indian women.”

Selena has yet to respond to the demands and negative reactions.

We’re not sure if she will, but we thought she looked AH-Mazing!

She certainly hasn't been the first non-Hindu celeb to sport a bindi (helloooo, Gwen Stefani), and we doubt she'll be the last.

So what do YOU think? Insensitive or no big deal??

She absolutely DOES NOT need to apologize. This is taken waayy out of context. I'm an indian and hindu and many people wear a bindi as a fashion statement, I bet you half of them don't even know what it truly symbolizes. People need to RELAX, no need to stir up controversy for nothing.

    Re: Roxette

you have to be kidding me. she's commodifying and eroticizing a specific culture, all while wearing something that holds religious significance to that culture. it's the exact same thing as BLACK FACE MINSTRELSY or sports teams having Native American mascots. And while claiming that she is "celebrating a culture" by relying on stereotypical representations of that culture is an opinion, it is an ignorant and faulty one. she is taking agency away from a culture that is already marginalized by the western world, and taking it upon herself to represent them even if they don't want to be represented by her (which i'm sure they don't). it is so overtly racist, it's troubling.

well. im hindu and honestly i am not offended at all and from other comments i have read, other people dont mind either. i think the rajan zed guy should just chill and be happy that she chose to wear something from our culture. i watched her performance and i dont think she disrespected us our our religion/culture in any way. people are just making a huge issue out of it because shes a celebrity.

yea no big deal a white person making money off south asian themes. There are no fukin south asian role models in northa american mass media, but it's okay for her to stick that on her head n lip synch her crappy ass song?? There are so many outbreaks and wars going on in South Asia people point and call them terrorist. But she's allowed to stick the bindi on her head make money and not be ridiculed for disrespect to south asian culture, or get the heat because shes white. Im so tired of people being amazed at the so called underdog stories that a white person goes through to hit fame when its only 100x harder for any other ethnicity to make it to the big leagues. FYI

Re: Shonali – maybe some old people don't like to see they way living turn into a joke or fashion style.. just because is famous and young don't mean that she can do it..

Honesty, I am a Hindu and I take this as flattery, and if Nicole Scherzinger can wear one while singing Jai Ho, why can't Selena Gomez wear one?
