oh here we go! Bindis are a decorative cosmetic that Indian people so happen to wear more often and for religious beliefs. I mean I've worn them and I've seen drunk Indian people wear them. If they make a big deal about that then Catholics should make a big deal about people wearing crosses, etc.
I DONT THINK SHE NEEDS TO APOLOGIZE!
Hahaaa, i'm Indian, personally I don't find it offensive at all because these days it really is more a fashion accessory than it is a religious symbol. I highly doubt many Indians or Hindus in specific know that it has religious connotations now.
Re: Roxette – yes i totally agree with you!
so when gwen stefani wore them it was okay right?? wtf??
did they make that big of a deal when gwen stefani would wear them?
Give me a break lol….If anything, it's celebrating the great culture of hinduism, and not a means to exploit the religion and offend anyone. I find the bindi fascinating, and for her to use it, as well as learn an authentic indian dance for her show was an ode to the culture. Everyone needs to calm and realize that not everything should be taken so heavily.
i dont think she needs to apologize! she is a celebrity so they are making big issue out of this.
the same thing happened when vanessa wore a bindi and took a photo whilst wearing indian clothing and it sparked a bit of contreversy. nothing new. it should die down soon dont worry selena
I am an indian, this is really stupid, many of the non-hindu Bollywood celebs wear bindi. Not a big of a deal at all.
So what if she's wearing a bindi she's just having fun
STFU! She did not do anything wrong! So sick of everytime someone is offended by something . They should be offended by how women are treated in those countries that practice Hinduism. Like women raped on busses in India and forced to undergo genital mutilation. That's something to be offended by . IDIOTS .
it's cool that indian people who are part of the culture have spoken out about not being offended… but apparently, there is a population that is. we can't tell them that what they feel is insignificant because that is the definition of racism… systematic racism. and what selena gomez is doing is cultural appropriation, she is taking one culture and turning it into a costume. while some indian people may not mind it, those who do need respect.
Hey leave her alone its not like she meant it in a bad way it's just an Indian theme it's not fair that u guys r treating her like this she doesn't deserve this
Come on Rajan Zed.. get a life .. what about Bollywood ? get a life man….You are becoming like the Taliban…. Hinduism is Tolreance. Ms Selena Gomez .. Please wear a bindi..
people dont go all crazy when nonchristians wear the cross…
Oh come on! We can't dress like anything anymore. It's an arsty expression…nothing more, nothing less. Calm down and worry more about living and breathing!!!
did anyone ask gwen stefani or madonna to take theirs off?
Re: selinaaaa – only reasonable comment this far.
I'm not Indian nor am I Hindu, but I went to Garba with a group of my Indian friends and they put the Bindi on me, not one of the people at Garba were freaking out saying that since I wasn't Indian or Hindu I shouldn't wear it.
worthless ignorant turd. she is pretty, but stupid.
Ah! I am Indian + Hindu and I don't find it offensive. There are certain people who take these type of things seriously yet may be the ones who wear bindis just for fashion. The fact it was used for spiritual stuff have really faded away tbh…I mean majority of the Hindus wear bindi's just for an accessory and if about apologizing then the whole BOLLYWOOD SHOULD APOLOGIZE. In most of the hindi songs you will find actresses wearing bindi and trying to seduce men - ain't that offensive then. Like if she insulted the bindi in front of everyone then that would have been a total different matter but apologizing for THIS if just meaningless.
I don't see anything offensive about her costume. Maybe people are offended by that awful performance she gave while wearing the costume. She seems to be pushing herself too hard. Girl needs to take a break and evaluate what she wants to do. The one things she was half-way decent at (playing herself on Wizards of Waverly Place), she's doing everything in her power to distance herself from the show and Disney. If she's not careful, she'll soon become a joke like Bieber.
lots of people including Gwen Stefani have worn the Bindi. perhaps it was the song that was offensive to many. "when your ready, come and get it" that sweetie stunk
I am SICK TO DEATH about all these groups demanding apologies etc. Things mean whatever you make it mean. There are bigger things to worry about and if someone is "offended" that's their own problem. These days everyone is up in arms about everything, no one can do anything right. Mind your own business. It looks pretty. If she said "this is not a bindi" then that is what is so.
Who cares? She looked gorgeous and put on a great performance considering she was dancing and singing at the same time which is NOT easy to do at all and even if it was insensitive I'm positive she didn't do it on purpose to hurt anyone…she probably doesn't even pick her clothes out she prob has a designer and like I said even if she did it's no biggie she didn't mean to offend any race or religion
She wasn't trying to offend anyone. The outfit suits the song if you listen to it, and she looks great. I have indian family members, and I doubt they're bothered. It's just haters finding a reason to bash her ( as usual )
Oh please! Stop being so sensitive! She wore the bindi with pride she didn't want to offend anyone.. I'm Irish and everyone always portray us as alcoholics, or a leprechaun! Get over it!
You cannot be serious. I cannot imagine anyone in India or Hinduism having problem with this. It has to be a marketing ploy or some dmbss hindu group trying to get some attention.
If they're going to ask Selena Gomez for an apology about this, then they should be asking all of the hipster kids who wear bindis for 'fashion' purposes and Urban Outfitters (they posted a blog telling people about how fashionable a bindi is) for apologies too.
Just because other people have done it doesn't make it okay. Artists need to stop dressing up in traditional clothing of other cultures. People in Hollywood constantly do the same thing with Native Americans. It's not okay. And to people who say she is celebrating the culture: you cannot celebrate a culture you know nothing about. And if she did research Hindu culture I doubt she would play dress up in their traditional clothing. Cultural appropriation and the over-sexualization of Indian women, and any women of color, is a serious problem and should not be taken lightly.
im sure selena didnt mean to offend their culture.
Oh get the F over it. I'll swear you can't scratch your a** these days without some a**hole bitching about it! I thought she was beautiful.
Fucking joke…everyone needs to get laid and stop being so dman politically correct
aaaaaaaaaaaaaa i am sick of ALL of THEM wanting the whole Western World to apologize every time it sneezes. KISS MY ARS AND FUCK OFF ALREADY!
pleeez do not apologise
Not only did Gwen wear these and nobody gave a care….but the other ppl who PERFORMED THAT NIGHT WORE TRADITIONAL MEXICAN MARIACHI OUTFITS….NOBODY COMPLAINED ABT THAT.im mexican and didnt get all bent out of shape…this is soooo stupid and silly..hello Indians…there are none of your ppl in mainstream america..she brought ya to the map this yr ..embrace it fools
"As if dealing with her Justin Bieber split wasn’t enough…." SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY!! The split happened ages ago and they have clearly moved on from it, and so should your ass as well, Grandpa Perez! Smh
Oh fuck off! If you want to wear a bindi, wear it. If you don't, don't wear one. If you don't like that Ms. Gomez wore a bindi, vote against her by not buying her albums. But for Christ's sake, stop crying because you feel offended. If you were secure in your own religious beliefs, then what other people do wouldn't phase you. It's between you and your god; not you, Selena and your god.
Re: Roxette – I agree. If Selena needs to apologize then so does Miley Cyrus for wearing them and Vanessa Hudgens and Gewn Stefani and the list goes on and on. If people need to apologzie for wearing bindis as an accessory then people should also apologize wearing rosarys as a fucking accessory.
If you, like myself, are tired of these self-proclaimed protectors of culture crying foul anytime something resembles what they consider "their own" - tell them so:
I'm indian and this is bullshit. aha like what? Whatever I think its hott and its not like bollywood and indian models exploit the bindi despite its "religious" connotations. fuck that. sorry! I don't know why this so called "controversy" annoys me so much. I guess I don't believe in stupid publicity stunts and hypocrisy. That said, I love being indian and my indian peeps. Rock it selena
REALLY!!! There's bigger issues out there at the moment, she's not the first non-religious person to wear a Bindi and she won't be the last
I'm Indian myself and wtf how on earth is this offensive?
LMAO wtf why do Indians always do this? They take it way out of portion and always blow things up! I'm Indian and I wasn't offended. In my culture there's nothing religious about it from what I know you can wear them for dressing up reasons. In other Indian cultures in some sense to some people it is, but a certain type of bhindi is the one shes wearing isn't. It can be used for decorative reasons. I was kind of happy that she did this sorta Indian inspired song and dance wtf is wrong with them lmao. Oh well I don't get it tho. Plus Gwen Stefani used to wear them all the time nobody said anything then? It kinda makes me mad that they just labeled it as their religious symbol when that's not entirely what a bhindi is for and there are certain types of them too.
She could switch to a lightweight cloth head tie thing that sits on the hair and comes down the forehead in a 'V' with a bauble in the centre. Hopefully that's not religious either, but more decorative.
Wow, it is not that serious. It is no big deal! It is for beauty. Lots on Indians in India wear it and they are not even Hindu. Should we apologize to someone?
Selene better not apologize, this is so unnecessary.
I get the offence- it is like an 80's rocker wearing a crucifix. Was tacky and offensive. I am sure she did not know- maybe it is her stylist who should apologize.
Stop is selena wants to wear what she wants its her choice and i repect that just stop jujeing her
I am Indian, and Hindu, and while I understand the religious significance of bindis, I personally do not see what the big deal is. I am not offended at ALL, and neither were my more traditional parents. In fact, I thought it was pretty cool that she chose to honor our culture in that way. Sure, she could stand to learn more about the worlds religions, but it's a performance that was not intended in any way to emulate Hindu beliefs.
To each their own, I guess…
This is all bullshit. many actresses and stars in india wear it and some bullshit crazy group is offended. im hindu and it doesn't bother me at all
I'm a hindu and i didn't find it offensive at all .. all those ppl who said leave it to indian women are definitely not cultured selena promoted indians and bollywood if anything else dont let the haters stop you no matter what
This moron Zed comes from an ancient tradition in Hinduism where they burnt widows in a funeral pyre of the husband in a ritual called 'sati'. Women are abused and killed every day on 'dowry' related issues. The ratio of men to women in India is lopsided due to female infanticide. Casteism is another curse of hinduism. There is more to worry than a bindi sported by a kid. This idiot now behaves like a Taliban. Let him shift and get back to that filthy country India. By the way I am a Hindu.
No one seemed to have an issue with this when Gwen Stefani used to wear them. Plenty of other celebs have worn them as well and no one has ever complained. Leave Selena alone!
Most ridiculous thing Ive ever heard!! Im from Bangladesh and we wear these ALLLL THE TIME!! Its a FASHION STATEMENT! These idiots need to get over it. Maybe I would understand if she was wearing plain a round one. But thats not even the case and even then its still seems ridiculous that this group of people would be offended! This was a decorative and fashionable and you can find them anywhere where they sell sarees and such! Wow.
I hope she DOESN'T apologize. People have the right to wear whatever they want regardless of their ethnicity. Putting such limits on people based on race seems racist in and of itself and is more based on resentment and control than anything else. How does doing such a thing unify us in any way? If anything it only keeps the pains and hostilities of the past alive.
As a Hindu, I would like to say they are NOT religious. A bindi is purely cosmetic!!!! NO APOLOGY IS NEEDED!!! Some people really need to check themselves before they make asses of themselves and propagate cultural falsities.
did some research on this idiot called rajan zed. his org seems to be a fake one man organization created to lure some donations if possible. there are no members in his organization. just look at his and his org's dummy web site. i dont know why he would be interviewed by anyone at all.. he is nobody.. this clearly looks like a publicity stunt to me.. on either side..
I'm indian and just saying this is stupid no big deal she can wear one if she wants!!!
Pure nonsense! Why Selena when they have failed to be insulted by countless other celebrities? As a sidenote, Bindi stick on jewelry is sold on most custume jewelry sites. The only thing I can come up with to explain the sudden outrage is to gain publicity for their organization.
OMG im freaking Indian and this is not even a big deal. Whoever these hindu groups are need to relax. I hope she doesnt actually apologize for something like wearing a bindi. People dont even wear them for religious reasons, theyre usually worn when we dress uo in indian clothes for a wedding or something and even then people are drunk and under the influnece of god knows what during these parties. Its an accessory for people these days just like wearing earings or something like that not about some sacred religion. These people have nothing better to do then worry about insignificant stuff like this
These morons need to worry about the degrading that women in their country go through on a daily basis first and how women are second class citizens next to men and maybe then worry about something insignificant as a bindi. Im Indian and i dont know a single indian person in my life in Canada or even family in India who honestly give a crap about bindis. They are accessories like jewlerry. This group is just trying to create attention for themselves nothing else.
Lets say she says she is sorry. Then what? Is that going to make everyone feel better? I have a feeling hoping off your high horse and getting the fuck over whatever issue you have will do more good than a half assed apology that people had to demand. She is a performer and wore it during a performance. No harm done. What's next? Are homeless people going to demand Johnny Depp apologize for ripping off their style?
Selena need not apologize. Ignore the highly sensitive racists whoever and wherever. But I must add, the average bollywood composition is musically far superior to what we heard (& saw) on MTV.
Yeah, to be honest I'm Indian and I could not care less. Perhaps that's because I'm insensitive as well. I understand where the Statesman is coming from, but come onnnn…she didn't mean any harm! If anything, we should be happy she's embracing Bollywood in her performance.
I cannot believe they managed to create an issue out of this. Her performance was great.
She looked amazing, and I think it's not a big deal, many other artists wears bindi's, even I wear them. It rocked!
This is totally insensitive! I couldn't agree more with Rajan Zed. I think she's being extremely disrespectful!
selena is not the only one who wore a bindi this week. vanessa hudgens also did. so, if selena needs to apologize, vanessa should too.
She definitely should not apologize!!! It`s a religious symbol of that one only true religion of the universe about our relationship with godly spirit and all direct individual parts of it, the spirit gods and spirit godesses. Only because Hindus preserved this knowledge of mankind better in their culture than some other countries, it does not mean that they own this religious symbol. Every living being in this universe can wear it!!!
I don't care WHAT this dumb bitch wears when she's onstage, but she doesn't PERFORM. The slut lip-syncs. She faked it on DWTS, too.
PEOPLE ARE RETARDED! THAT IS NOT OFFENSIVE. THE BINDI IS SOOOO TOTALLY A FASHION ACCESSORY THESE DAYS, EVEN IN INDIA AND PAKISTAN. I KNOW FOR A FACT. THAT DAMN GROUP OF HINDUS NEEDS TO SHUT UP.
what a joke. I mean u can only be so much politically correct, these protests take it to absurd proportions!!
The real issue here is the fact that she even has a record deal, when she sounds like a walrus with strep throat.
i think its racist to believe only indian women can understand the concept of the 3rd eye and flame. pretty sure the great greta garbo wore something like that as Mata Hari, my favorite girl with Xtra Xtra read all about it sight.. anyway, what if selena IS hindu? does that ever even cross their mind? i knew a white chick who was half that and half Xian. her parents had been Xian missionaries too
Re: selinaaaa – for all you know she SUBSCRIBES to hindu beliefs. ive known caucasians who do. you're making the assumption she doesnt respect it for all it is. did it ever occur to you that maybe she picked it specifically because its the only thing thats helping her through this time? and if anything shes positively repping it. no disrespect. if you want that go watch Carmensita on youtube with natalie portman who's fucking awesome
please DO NOT apologize! im Indian and loved it! Selena was not giving of a 'seductive effect' as much as you see in many Indian music videos, it looked very tasteful! Also every Indian girl I know wears a bindi as a fashion accessory, they even sell them in some highstreet stores now.
Oh come on….Don't channel your insecurities on these celebs who trytheir best to entertain.
Lets concentrate on how great she looked and her amazing songs
I am from India and I think Selena rocked the look including bindi. Its in fact a healthy promotion of indian culture.
We <3 u Selena
Leave her alone. If that's the case then Catholics should take offense to people wearing rosary beads around their necks.
Whats deh big issue here. So all of a suden its a disrespect to wear a Bindi. Gwen Stefani did it and never once have I heard of this so call Society calling for her to apologize. Give me a flipping break!!!!!!!!! People just pick on whoever to get there 15 minutes….She doesn't need to apologize for nothing, she didnt offend any one!
OH PLEASE! gotta love people stirring the pot! PETA from DWTS and Shawn Johnson both dressed up in bindis for their performances and no one said squat!
Re: delicia –
many indians in america might not know, but it is a religious symbol in the Hindu community at large.
but whatever, she should wear a Jewish Yarmulke next.
Firstly, her performance had nothing to do with the Indian culture and therefore the outfit choice was out of place. Secondly, if she's going to apologize for anything then it should be for her performance. That was the biggest shit show ever and she can't even sing. I absolutely hated that performance, she honestly sounded like a dying donkey. I was happy when it finally ended. Lastly, I agree that she should educated herself about world religions (as should everyone else) but who cares if she wore the bindi? I'm more upset that they allowed her to sing in public than anything else. Again, that performance had nothing to do with Hinduism/India/the Indian culture, therefore the outfit was unnecessary. Overall, the performance itself was unnecessary
No big deal! Love the bindi!
Ha ha loser!
Really I mean Selena can wear whatever she wants. The bindi is a decorative thing you can wear. I mean ppl should rlly back off and just let ppl do whatever she wants to. Like rlly come on!
Re: Roxette – "drunk Ind…" I SEE A RACIST LOOUD AND CLEAR!
Its unique style, it's so hard to see Hollywood celebs dressing like that, for them maybe it's embarrassing. shuhh shuhh for the haters :* #selena, SOO don't have to apologize
Omg, I'm an Indian and the bindi IS a fashion accessory!!! The whole religious significance thing was a million years ago, funny thing is a majority of Indians young and old wouldn't even flinch at the thought of her wearing a bindi. The Universal society of Hinduism is overreacting! Also, what about all of the Bollywood hoochies dancing around half naked thrusting their hips and wiggling their breasts? They wear bindis too!!! Seriously, coming from an Indian, this whole thing has been blown out of proportion!
um, I am Indian, and I do not find it offensive at all. Many women wear it just for fashion. Even in Bollywood movies, the actresses wear just for fashion. Nothing is wrong with wearing one. Those people criticizing Selena, just don't like her as a person, so they are finding reasons to criticize her.
And when Khloe Kardashian wears one no one gives a shit… yeah okay.
We live rin a free country and we have the right to wear a dot on our forheade or a binid or anything else we want. I have been told by Indian people who live here that it is really no big deal anymore and they are usually worn for cosmetic reasons. Somem people just want o rin theri mouths and tell people how to dress and what they can and cannot do. I see people weating rosaries and crosses all the time and I don;t care . It is all nonsense.
I'm East Indian and I see no problem with Selena wearing the bindi. Maybe the people who are asking for the apology are watching too many shows on ATN because this is just creating unnecessary drama.
This is so silly!! Bollywood Actresses wear bindis al the time while wearing skimpy clothes and dancing.. Selena's performance wasn't even slutty or anything! Such hypocrites! This is so funny I am an indian and I don't anyone who would object to something like this!
Re: Bala – exactly. speaking of spiritual this Society better condemn disgusting crimes that literally rocked India lately. this is how you "promote" and teach values and respect for traditions.
If the Universal Society of Hindu Religion is going to demand an apology from one star for wearing Bindi then they should demand the same from every non-Indian/ non-Hindu star that wears Bindi. Otherwise their argument that it has such religious significance and is very spiritual is defeated by their own actions, or lack their of. Because what they are really saying is "We don't like you wearing it because we don't like and/or approves of you, so don't use or spiritual symbol to look pretty." If it is really so important to your religion you can't pick and choose who you publicly berate for being insensitive. You have too berate everyone. ( At least you do if you want any credibility.)
Seriously this girl is an amazing role model for young women and teens, leave her alone. She was just trying to perform. Stop being so damn up tight with shit and move the hell on. there are way bigger issues going on in the world. This little Dot on her head is NO BIG DEAL. YOU LOOKED STUNNING SELENA!
I think Indian people should then apologize for wearing western clothes! They should leave western clothes to western people! LOL
BTW I'm muslim and I'm not Indian, but I do wear Bindi and Saree whenever I feel like dressing up!!!
Selena……..don't apologize!!!! I'm half Indian and lived in India for years…….everyone wears the bindi like a fashion accessory…Christians, Muslims and Hindu girls!!! Obviously someone who has no clue about these things initiated the 'apology' tweet. DON"T!!! There are so many of us here who are with you on this one!
Come on, she didn't kill anyone!!!
Idian people should get over it.
It was beautiful on her.
There is tragic things happening in this world everyday and people are getting mad about a bindi ??? that makes me speechless, these people should feel ashamed.
I found it totally racist that someone woyuld think that only Inidan women can wear bindis.
I am Indian AND Hindu and I was really happy when I heard her song cause she kind of payed homage to our culture through it, and I respect her A LOT for that. And even non-Hindu women wear bindis here in India itself, its no big deal at all. People like this Rajan Zed are undermining what our culture stands for and have given a bad image of religious intolerance to all Indians, which is not true at all. And anyway, how many of them demanded a public apology from the rapists and people responsible for female genocide? None. Just pay attention to things that MATTER ,will you, Zed?
Re: BriBriBri4 – if she is subscribing to hindu beliefs that's one thing. but personally, i believe she is subscribing to the bollywood look. I mean, c'mon… that's obvious. I understand the "homage" paying to another culture but I still find it inappropriate. I am not saying she's disrespectful, she is just appropriating a culture that she is not a part of. It's like if Britney Spears performed in a pancho and sombrero, it just makes no cultural sense. We don't need more and more people dressing up in a costume to honor a culture… it's not honorable, it's annoying.
