new zealand passes marriage equality bill to legalize same sex marriage

Dear New Zealand, YOU ROCK!!!

The land of the kiwis just became one of our new favorite places on the planet as it is set to become the latest country to legalize same-sex marriage!

Hundreds of supporters gathered in screening rooms to watch and celebrate as the historic Marriage Equality Bill was passed with 77 votes to 44!

Labour MP Louisa Wall (pictured above) was one of THE key figure behind the bill and had a short but sweet message after the HUGE victory:

“In our society the meaning of marriage is universal - it's a declaration of love and commitment to a special person.”

Preach sista!

As always, there were still people who opposed the legalization of same-sex marriage, but Customs Minister Maurice Williamson told the haters to chill out, saying:

“I give a promise to those people who are opposed to this bill right now… the sun will still rise tomorrow, your teenage daughter will still argue back with you as if she knows everything, your mortgage will not grow, you will not have skin disease or rashes or toads in your bed. So don’t make this into a big deal, this is fantastic for the people if affects but for most of us life will go on.”

Ha! We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

Although the bill passed on a vote, it is not expected to go into effect as law until August, but that didn't stop supporters from taking to the streets and partying!

This comes just DAYS after the news of Uruguay approving a similar measure of their own, and once the Uruguayan president signs off on the bill, they and New Zealand will become the twelfth and thirteenth countries respectively to legalize same-sex marriage!

This is a HUGE step in the right direction, and hopefully other countries will begin to follow suit in the near future!

Way to go, New Zealand!

Being opposed to something doesn't make you a hater, you dumb asshole. You liberal fucks are all alike. You insist on tolerance, but that tolerance is only acceptable if others agree with you. This is why people like YOU get no respect; do not delude yourself that your hypocrisy doesn't show, because it does. Pull your head out of your diseased ass and realize that YOU are part of the problem and that YOU are, in fact, a hater and a bully.

Re: cookoo4no1 – Get a clue, you stupid shit. To find out what a real third-world country is, go visit one, instead of writing retarded crap from the comfort of your home via the internet that people in third-world countries don't have. If you don't like the U.S., get the fuck out. No one's making you stay here.

Yes, NZ rocks, for many reason, beautiful landscape, superb musical talent, and food that would challenge many Michelin star chef's.

That aside, this would have been a very hard fight, NZ has many churches that would have opposed this with full force.

For me, I welcome the change with open arms. Congratulations, and this achieved by a native Nzr is very symbolic. Ka pai kē.

Tu Meke NZ!!! As a fellow kiwi in NZ I was stoked this morning to wake up to this news.
Today I am feeling proud to be a New Zealander. I know first hand that whilst it takes a male and female to create a life… ( hubby and I have 2) that it takes DEDICATED AND LOVING people to nurture and raise a child. I would much rather see any same sex parents or single parents such as Perez raising children in this world with love dedication and pride above some of todays straight parents who sadly don't deserve to have children. For the gay communities everywhere, you have all had to suffer and fight to be accepted for what we "straight" people take for granted every single day. Our rights, our acceptance, to live in a world without judgement or hate for simply being who we were born to be. I CELEBRATE for you today. The fight, the struggle and the need to look deep within yourselves for acceptance and mana ( strength) …. creates the kind of soul that can make the most wonderful parents on this earth. From a mother who has to teach her children about bullying and how to have integrity and strength at 5 and 8 years old… I live by an old Abraham Lincoln quote that - " we teach the children… so that it is not necessary to teach the adults." I am inspired that my son and daughter will grow up in a land not only beautiful on the outside… but beautiful within.

    ONE LOVE NZ xxx

Whatever your politics, the moment the bill was passed there was a spontaneous response from the public gallery which defines "cool".

For anyone unfamiliar with the Maori love song Pōkarekare ana, it was popularised by Maori soldiers in WW1 its opening chorus is translates:

The waves are breaking, against the shores of Waiapu,
My heart is aching, for your return my love.
Oh my beloved, come back to me, my heart is breaking for of love for you.
