A rep from the White House has just confirmed that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, will face criminal charges in federal court, rather than be designated an enemy combatant.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said in the case against Dzhokhar, this is "absolutely the right way to go and the appropriate way to go."
Citing other terrorists who have been tried and convicted in federal court, he added:
“The system has repeatedly proven that it can successfully handle the threat that we continue to face.”
Dzhokhar was reportedly arraigned in his hospital bed earlier today and while some outlets are reporting his charges are being sealed, others have reported that he has been officially charged with with one count of using and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction in the U.S. and one count of malicious destruction of property with an explosive device. The charges could carry the death penalty.
