Sorry, Jackie Robinson!

Tom Cruise just proved that he can still send a movie to the top of the box office!

In fact, with the actor's latest sci-fi extravaganza, Oblivion, he secured himself one of his biggest opening weekend ever, as it pulled in a pretty impressive $38.1 million!

Excluding the Mission: Impossible flicks, this his is most lucrative since War of the Worlds!

And that was when Dakota Fanning was still a child!

Despite his throne's usurpation, however, the aforementioned baseball legend's new biopic, 42, held steady at the #2 spot with $18 million, while Ryan Gosling's new indie The Place Beyond the Pines expanded release by 1,500 theaters and made it to #6, with $4.7 million!

Ch-ch-check out the reason of this weekend's box office top tenAFTER THE JUMP!!!

1. Oblivion, $38.1 million
2. 42, $18 million
3. The Croods, $9.5 million
4. Scary Movie 5, $6.3 million

I loved and enjoyed every minute of Oblivion, a fantastic Sci-Fi masterpiece. I plan to see it again, this time at IMAX. And I will get it on DVD later for my collection to watch at home.

What competition does this movie have? It is the only NEW MOVIE in Wide release.. The other major new movie.. The Place beyond… is an INDIE, like you said, with limited release…………

Did TC make this MOVIE?? Doubtful… It is another ACTION TYPE MOVIE.. that almost any DECENT ACTOR AGED 24-60 probably could have 'starred in'…

Tom Cruise-when was the last time he STARRED in a movie where he HAD TO CARRY IT using his ACTING instead of $$Millions in SPECIAL EFFECTS??(Not talking his makeup!) and it did great??? I can't think of one in the last decade…

Also.. Oblivion has been ADVERTISED EVERYWHERE!! Constant commercials …on multiple stations, papers, internet.. I was watching AVATAR on TV yesterday and at least 10 ads for this movie were through the movie.. 5-the same interview with Cruise. like I missed the 1st,2nd,….

    Re: Tom
You clearly don't know what you are talking about, you are simply on the hater band wagon. Tom does not do special effects, its all him, stunts and all, he is the only actor that goes the distance and NO, most actors can-NOT do, and are not willing to do, nor do they have the level of commitment to do things at the calibar TC does it. Get your facts straight cause everything you said is fiction. Tainted by your hater Eye-glasses.

I was torn between this snoozer and "The Place Beyond the Pines" and unfortunately, I made the wrong decision. There was a time I would see a Tom Cruise movie, regardless of reviews. He has had a fantastic career at the box office. However, of late, his role choices have left me very un satisfied.

I guess people are going to see it but not liking it according to Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 57% Audience 68%.

I was impressed with the production value and the overall themes of Oblivion -

Re: Tom – Tom Cruise never gets the credit he deserves. Other than Tom Hanks, no other actor consistently has had the box office success spread out in over four different decades (and no, Clint Eastwood’s more decades of movies do not count because the numbers are not big enough, both in box office and years apart) than Tom Cruise. I’ve been reading all of these articles saying 38 million is not as big as it should be, but we have to start looking at the whole picture. It actually made 150 million in its one weekend one week release, and at a production budget of 120 million, this is why he is still the biggest star in the world. And opening weekend and theatrical release is only an advertisement for blu-ray and dvd where they make the real money for the next 10 years of so. If you look at all his movies and include worldwide grosses, he only has had one movie or two, no one I think that didn’t make a profit. I think Lions for Lambs (and maybe a couple before Top Gun). In a thirty two year career that’s pretty good.
