Apparently, Lauryn Hill and taxes do not mix. But unfortunately for her, that’s not really an option.

The former Fugees singer, who has been looking at three years in prison due to tax evasion, could in fact avoid her time inside thanks to a $1 million Sony record deal.

Lauryn owes close to $504,000 in federal taxes on her $1.8 million income earned between 2005 and 2007. But things were looking up at her Monday proceeding in Newark, New Jersey.

Assistant US Attorney Sandra Moser said that Lauryn’s five song Sony deal could be the solution. Judge Madeline Cox decided to postpone the singer’s sentencing until May 6th, giving her the added time to pay off her taxes. The Judge said:

"This is not someone who stands before the court penniless… Actions speak louder than words.”

Write those songs, and pay those taxes, gurrrl! Get yourself out of this mess!!

If you bothered to do research instead of repeating misinformation, you would know that Lauryn has not received one penny from Sony. The judge made the comment about her not being "penniless" in relation to her having substantial assets. The judge was upset because she should not have relied on a promise of a recording contract. Her lawyer said she will take a loan against 2 properties she owns to pay restitution not her contract with Sony.

Also, Lauryn's freedom is still at risk. People should pray for her. She has 6 children that need her. The music is secondary. I truly hope that the judge will be mercyful and give Lauryn probation so she can continue to care for her children.

Re: FactsGoALongWay – 52 million Americans are on food stamps, if she is not paying her fair share she is starving people to death. You have no idea what the IRS will do to you if you don't pay. by the time they are done with her she will have nothing. they will add fines and penaltys that will bankrupt her. People have killed themselves over this stuff. The IRS have so much power over your life you have no idea. Americans just keep giving the government more power over tem.

The sentencing has already been delayed multiple times, the better part of a year, as she toured the world but she has yet to pay back any significant money. She should have received the maximum penalty and thrown in jail last summer instead of making a fool of the judge and a joke out of our revenue and legal system.

Re: William Holder – she better thank her lucky stars she is famous and black, because trust me us regular white people would be in the slammer.
