country music hall of famer george jones dies at age 81

Country music just lost one of its biggest stars today as the iconic George Jones passed away earlier this morning.

The legendary singer was 81 years old when his lungs finally gave out on him.

According to a family member:

"He has been on oxygen for a long while now and his lungs finally just couldn’t do it anymore and they collapsed and he passed away. He couldn’t breathe anymore on his own."

George was touring when he was hospitalized in Nashville last week due to a high fever, but it hasn’t been confirmed if that’s what led to his death.

The He Stopped Loving Her Today was one of the most successful artists of the genre, charting more hits than any other country musician and being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992.

Our thoughts and hearts go out to George’s family and loved ones.

What's amazing is George survived so long
Talk about burning the candle at both ends, he did it
and still produced some of the best music out there
I still love his duets with Tammy

My favorite George Jones story, after he lost his license for DUI
he was arrested a few miles from his home, at about 1 in the morning, driving a lawn mower, heading to a bar

Re: RIP – correction: no one under 20… In my 20s and have know and loved George Jones' music since I was a little girl. Same for many of my friends… It's amazing what your Grandparents and Parents can introduce you to. But then again I'm from Texas… country legends still get played regularly out here.

Re: RIP – I grew up listening to George Jones and I'm 19 years old. I grew up listening to him, Conway, Johnny, June, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, and pretty much anyone from that time frame. Then again, I'm from Alabama…so a lot of people here listen to old and new country.

A lot of your readers aren't going to know who he is. They think Taylor Swift is country.
