Lauryn Hill Dishes On Her HUGE Debt And The Record Deal That Could Save Her!

Lauryn Hill speaks!!!

It has been reported that Lauryn has BIG problems with the tax man that could land her in the slammer unless the payday from her new record deal saves her from being thrown behind bars, but what does Miss Hill have to say about the matter??

The former Fugees frontwoman has revealed that *GASP* not everything is as it seems!

In regard to the DEEP financial debt she's found herself in, Lauryn explained:

"This has been a 10+ year battle, for a long time played out behind closed doors, but now in front of the public eye. This is an old conflict between art and commerce… free minds, and minds that are perhaps overly tethered to structure. This is about inequity, and the resulting disenfranchisement caused by it. I’ve been fighting for existential and economic freedom, which means the freedom to create and live without someone threatening, controlling, and/or manipulating the art and the artist, by tying the purse strings."

That is quite the cause, but just because you're an artist DOES NOT mean you don't have to pay your taxes like the rest of us!

Sorry gurl!!!

As for whether or not that paycheck from Sony will TRULY pay for her "existential and economic freedom??"

She spilled:

"The nature of my new business venture, as well as the dollar amount reported, was inaccurate, only a portion of the overall deal. Keep in mind, my past recordings have sold over 50,000,000 units worldwide, earning the label a tremendous amount of money (a fraction of which actually came to me)."

Ahhhh! We hope— for her and her childrens' sake— that she's able to collect the $968,000 she owes by her court date on May 6 !!!

Jail is NO place for such a soulful goddess!

Read the rest of Lauryn's passionate letter to the public in its entirety (below)!!!

"It has been reported that I signed a new record deal, and that I did this to pay taxes. Yes, I have recently entered into an agreement with Sony Worldwide Entertainment, to launch a new label, on which my new music will be released. And yes, I am working on new music.

I’ve remained silent, after an extensive healing process. This has been a 10+ year battle, for a long time played out behind closed doors, but now in front of the public eye. This is an old conflict between art and commerce… free minds, and minds that are perhaps overly tethered to structure. This is about inequity, and the resulting disenfranchisement caused by it. I’ve been fighting for existential and economic freedom, which means the freedom to create and live without someone threatening, controlling, and/or manipulating the art and the artist, by tying the purse strings.

It took years for me to get out of the ‘parasitic’ dynamic of my youth, and into a deal that better reflects my true contribution as an artist, and (purportedly) gives me the control necessary to create a paradigm suitable for my needs. I have been working towards this for a long time, not just because of my current legal situation, but because I am an artist, I love to create, and I need the proper platform to do so.

The nature of my new business venture, as well as the dollar amount reported, was inaccurate, only a portion of the overall deal. Keep in mind, my past recordings have sold over 50,000,000 units worldwide, earning the label a tremendous amount of money (a fraction of which actually came to me).

Only a completely complicated set of traps, manipulations, and inequitable business arrangements could put someone who has accomplished the things that I have, financially in need of anything. I am one artist who finds value in openly discussing the dynamics within this industry that force artists to compromise or distort themselves and what they do, rather than allowing them to make the music that people need. There are volumes that could (and will) be said."

Yes, the recording industry can be a parasitic, money sucking cesspool. She should talk to Madonna. If anyone could help Lauryn get a firm grip on her share of the finances, it would be Madge.

I don;t see what has changed during your 10 years layoff. Your album has sold more during your absence. Why would the company give you anything? It's your back against the wall. What negotiation powers do you have to demand anything? Don't you still owe Sony Records additional albums. Lauryn you don't need to save face. Just come out sell the houses if necessary (this is your cross) and you are at the crossroad. Who are you going to serve God or money? He brought you out and now you are clawing to get back in! It won't work. The hand of God is upon you. You can sing about the problems, but only He can give you the answer and that not going to sell to well. People wants fantasy, but reality is what they need.
You are one crying in the wilderness. Repent and be healed. Then you will embark on a new journey. There will be no manipulation, you will have no reputation, you won't be preaching fantasies, but salvation. Lauryn, will thou be made whole??????????????????????????

yes, it's parasitic. but she always have the option of moving elsewhere, where the conditions may be far less favorable.

Someone with a heart needs to snap her out of that rambling and lovingly put her face to face with reality. Reality is the real beauty.

Miss. Hill you have been thur a lot more than any of us can imagine. We reap what we sow. Karma is a bitch. I respect you accepting responsibility for your past actions that have caused you to come to the conclusions you have made. We make our world pretty much!!! I am not in the business but I have read many documentaries that are not on TV that help me to see how the entertainment (music) business is really truly a cut throat business. You actually are selling your soul but most artist are so wrapped up in performing they don't realize until it's to late that you have sold your soul. I wish only good things for you and your family and stay true to yourself and your creator
