When Zach Braff launched his Kickstarter campaign to raise money for his next directorial effort, he was looking for support from fans.
What he didn't expect was the Internet backlash!
In addition to being quickly kickstarted, Zach has also been swiftly kicked in the pants! Critics have accused him of exploiting the crowdfunding site when, as the star of a hit sitcom, he had plenty of money of his own!
But Zach says he has no idea where these estimates of his net worth are coming from! He says:
"People seem to think I have Oprah Winfrey money. I’ve done well in my career, but I am not sitting on $22 million."
So why not go the traditional route of being funded by independent financiers? Garden State was a big hit! Surely he could make another film that way! He says:
"I’m doing this so that one negative audience comment in a test screening won’t force me to change the end of my movie."
We can see where critics are coming from. Zach is crowdfunding to keep his movie under his personal control; Veronica Mars needed Kickstarter to even exist!
But Zach doesn't mind the detractors. After all, he has more than enough backers already, having surpassed his $2 million goal in less than a week. He says:
"People who don’t like what I’m doing, that’s fine. That’s the great thing about crowd-sourcing — it’s very pragmatic. You’re into it or you’re not. There are obviously a lot of people who like the idea and will support it. I feel like we’ve all joined this little club and we’re going to make a movie together."
Well, like it or not, the movie is def getting made now. We just can't wait to see this ending he expects everyone to hate!
