No, really. We mean that. We’re simply in awe of the talent that was presented to us in this episode… even if the episode itself wasn’t so great. You wouldn’t think that a show like Glee could screw up paying tribute to Stevie Wonder, and while truthfully, the musical numbers were vocal smashes, the rest of the episode left a lot to be desired.
But then again, we don’t know how much of the end of this season had to change to accommodate the losing of Finn for the final 3 episodes. That may play a part in all of this. So, we’ll cut them some slack…
WARNING: WE’RE RECAPPING LAST NIGHT’S EPISODE, WHICH DID GIVE US A LEAD IN TO THE FINALE NEXT WEEK BY DROPPING SOME MAJOR HINTS, EVEN IF IT DID LACK SEVERLY IN PLOT ADVANCEMENT. TAKE A LOOK TO SEE WHAT TIDBITS YOU MIGHT NEED FOR NEXT WEEK; MIGHT BE WORTH JUST DOING THAT AND THEN JUST WATCHING THE PERFORMANCES. CARRY ON.
All right. Honestly, we’re just going to break it down for you into a few key things that happened – or more accurately, were spoken about in many cases – in last night’s Stevie Wonder tribute episode that you should be aware of for the season finale.
First, no, Blaine and Kurt are not engaged… Daddy Burt put the kibosh on that dream by yelling out, “he’s too young” to poor Blaine after he asked his permission. But as most of us already know, Blaine will be visiting Patty Duke's Jewlery Emporium next week to look at rings regardless of Burt’s disapproval (which, again, is only because they are so young. No other reason. In fact, his main platform in his political campaign has been same sex marriage). So, hold on for one more week on that one… But also, Burt has been pronounced cancer free by his doctors, which opens the door for him to return next season, and finally shed some light on a fairly dark couple of weeks in Lima.
Also, in like a rapid fire recap that REALLY seemed rushed, Mr. Schue announced to this class that not only was Rachel one of the three finalists to play Fanny Brice (fingers crossed that her other auditioners, Sutton Foster and Mamie Gummer show up next week), but that Brittany has been accepted with early admission to MIT (say WHAT?!) and that he has reproposed to Emma, who has accepted and they are getting hitched after Regionals.
That’s a lot of information to receive in 60 seconds…. Anywho….
We also learned that Mercedes Jones went out to L.A. and landed the opportunity of a lifetime in less than six months – a record deal! And not only that, but she’s come back to lil ole Lima to shoot her first music video for her first single. Things take a turn, however, when her producer wants her to “sex” up her appearance, which MJ is not too pleased with. In the end, she walks away from her deal in hopes of forging her own path that doesn’t involve diminishing her integrity. Preach it, Mercedes Jones.
Back in New York, Rachel has one final showdown with Cassie July, who learns from those pesky, super-spying gays that Rachel has gotten her callback and hasn’t told a soul. Cassie informs Rachel that her midterm has been moved to the day before her second audition and that she will be expected to perform the hardest ballet known to man… except none of that happens. In a twist, Cassie brings all of Rachel’s classmates together (except Brody! Hello?!) to wish Rachel good luck and have one last twirl around the floor. "I saw something in you that first day and I thought to myself, this one is special, this one might make it," Cassie explains, and insists that Rachel will get the part of Fanny Brice. Hopefully, she speaks the truth.
And finally, one of the Gleeks has finally made a decision about his future, one that will add to the ranks of former New Direction kids living in the Big Apple. Artie has been accepted at the Brooklyn Film Academy. At first, he says he isn’t going, out of fear of leaving his mother. But then his mother, played by Katey Sagal, who was SEVERELY underused, explains that she’s done everything she could for him after his accident to get him to his moment. He’s going to go be the next Woody Allen, and that’s final!
And so, now that makes four Gleeks in New York next summer. Anymore takers?
And that about wraps it up… next week! Regionals! A wedding! And will Rachel Berry finally be Miss Fanny Brice on BROADWAY??? AND WILL SOMEONE PLEASE JUST TELL US WHO IS CATFISHING RYDER ALREADY?!!?
