American Idol Ratings Lower Than Ever! Can It Be Saved?!

| Filed under: TV NewsAmerican IdolReality TV

american idol ratings low

American Idol has fallen deep down the ratings rabbit hole. But will it be able to climb its way back out?!

The singing competition show’s consistently low ratings continued last Thursday and dropped even further down the Nielson scale. With just 11 million viewers, the show’s ratings were down 7% from just the previous week!

YIKES! The show’s producers are going to have to do something quickly to save their drowning baby.

We wonder if this week’s latest Nicki Minaj-Mariah Carey drama was a much needed publicity stunt.

What’s more, with rumors of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez’s potential Idol judgeships circling — not to mention Jennifer Lopez's — the smell of desperation is lingering.

Watch out, AI! Things are getting dark and damp down there!

American Idol became a joke when they hired that clown, Nicki Minaj.

  2. 2

Brace yourselves - the close minded "I hate Nicki Minaj" posts are coming!

Low ratings, still a higher watched show.

I liked Nicki at the beginning of the show, but I have totally changed my mind about her now- she is nasty to the contestants, nasty to the fellow judges, nasty to the people who interview her by the scenes, and sets a terrible example to young fans.

Firing her before the finale would be one GUARANTEED way to get huge ratings for the final episode.

American Idol is getting lower ratings because it is less and less relevant. There are so many new outlets for young, fresh artists to be discovered and publicized, the show just isn't as interesting anymore. Let's face it… the formula is old too…push over judges and hard-ass Simon congratulate and humiliate a bunch of contestants yadda yadda.

  12. 12

They need to get rid of that idiot, Nicki Minaj.

  13. 13

Can't be saved. Everyone thank Nicki-the-clown-Minaj. Horrible judge. Horrible human.

Maybe stop trying to appeal to the kiddies, who have a short attention span. Get some world wide respected older artists (who might not be busy & honored to do it) that the fat demographic know and recognize; and widen the scope of the tunes from bad pop to R & B, blues and some decent rock and even metal. Cast the net wider up to and including the boomers. Sponsors should know who has financial clout.

This show is a flop because of the producers poor decisions on production of the show. The judges are not the cause or problem nor are the contestants which are great. The show should get rid of themed weeks, wrong song selections, irrelevant musical mentors, outdated stage productions, unnecessary behind the scene filming and video footage fillers that bore the viewers. Keep the show one day a week for one-two hours. The show should have live voting results displayed. At each beginning of the show immediate eliminations and then start the next round of competition for one week of voting campaigns via social media.

Sure Mariah can be a bit boring on her judging but she's a legend. I gave Nicki Minaj a try and the girl has a stick up her ass. She's late and only honest when she feels like it. She's the most disliked judge on that panel and honestly not a good fit. She knows her time is up, that's why she doesn't give a f**k on her judging.

    Re: Prince Charming
How is hating Nicki Minaj being close-minded? You have to be somewhat simple-minded to like that hack. I see you fit that bill.

  18. KC says – reply to this

That's because they have the most boring, white-bread contestants this season to ever grace the most boring, white-bread show in television history.

  19. 19

The ratings are flopping because I think the general public is just get tired of American idol. I think it's really run its course. Plus you know it's getting despite when production has been pushing this nicki vs Mimi fued.

Here's an idea. HIRE EVEN MORE OUTLANDISH STARS that we don't give one shit about. Drum up some drama, and GO!

Oh wait . . . been there, done that.

Formula's broken now, dudes. Let it go.

Idol producers would not be so stupid as to hire Justin and Selena. Neither are good singers - they are just current pop idols. Talk about no viewership… wow - probably no contestants either. Rumors like this are ridiculous.

Re: @v@ – Get some respected artists with long track records as judges, not flash in the pan here today's and who are they's, sorry Randy. A few more professional performances every show would pull the variety people in to watch; spend a little (to make a little) instead of trying to keep all the sponsor moolah.

Back in 2011 I stated that the music talent show format is in the maturity phase of the product life cycle, e.g., many competitors enter the field; cutthroat competition, etc., and
that the last and final phase is decline. The appearance is given that the producers wanted to mirror the aforementioned cutthroat competition of many competing music shows with its selection of its judges panel. This is their decision and it did not work.
But it does not matter because the format is over. Without their even realizing it audiences are looking for the next big thing. I do know what that is.

    Re: flyguygirl – Yes.

  25. John says – reply to this

Thank god maybe we can get rid of this horrid show. Seems each year the talent gets worse. The judges are a joke. Nicki Minaj is horrid she plays to most audiences like a sinking ship. Most of the issue is older audiences don't understand her or identity with her. JLO and even Marah they can identify with. Some of the issue to is the show lost its Mom and apple pie feeling.

  26. John says – reply to this

Nicki comes of extremely bad on TV. Simple as that she makes the show hard to watch. Even with out her it is hard to watch.

  27. 27

It was a good family show until Nicki was hired she is too trashy and families don't feel comfortable watching anymore

Re: Paris – I agree. Nicki has that ability to speak the truth and offer up honest criticism that the singers can use. She is the best judge the AI has ever had.

  29. Stephanie says – reply to this

Re: Paris – No one was talking about her money dumbass. Of couse she has a lot. Whether she's good or not in people's opinions her songs do sell and are played. I don't think many or any of us here make that much.

Re: Rick – You've got to be kidding me. If you wanted truth and such I believe SIMON was the best at that.

That Nikky HAS,,,to Go.. She is the one that has the show in trouble..

  32. Marc says – reply to this

Anyone who follows music knows that Mariah Carey is "Michael Jackson Crazy"…Her drinking, weight problems and elitist attitude is well documented, but also she has the personality of a brick. Now that people have gotten to see her week in and week out, the real Mariah has been revealed and it can't be put back into the box…Her last 10 songs have failed, and now Idol has failed…This could end her career..

    Re: Paris
The show is not ABOUT Mz. Minaj, it's supposed to be about the contestants. I'm done with Idol after years of being a loyal fan, so is the rest of America.

  34. Dick Phace says – reply to this

the show actually jumped around '07-'08 when Howard Stern proved that their voting system was a joke when he barely had a few thousand of his listeners voting for Sanjaya, one the the weakest singers ever to make it to the final 3 or 4, i dont remember. All of a sudden it was exposed as a mere glorified high school popularity voting contest to see if poindexter can be "prom king." All the winners after that year were virtually "forgettable."
