Lauryn Hill's Neurotic Society Contains A Slew Of Hateful, Anti-LGBT Lyrics!

lauryn hill neurotic society drag queens pride fiends girl men anti lgbt

Fresh off losing a battle against the IRS, Lauryn Hill is picking a new fight!

And we don't like it one bit!!

If the lyrics to her new track Neurotic Society are any indication, the singer/rapper extraordinaire blames the LGBT community for the degradation of civilization!!

Ugh!! We wish we were kidding!

In the song's opening verse, the former Fugees star negatively references "drag queens," "pride fiends," and "girl men."

She raps:

Commerce and girl men
Run the whole world men
Bold, drunken debauchery
Old world brutality
Cold world killed softly
Whole world run savagely
Greedy men and pride fiends
Program TV screens
Quick scam and drag queens
Real life's been blasphemed

Yuck! How truly disappointing!!!

The track was admittedly rushed quicker than Lauryn would've liked to satisfy a legal deadline, but there is no excuse for including such an intolerant message!!

We aren't sure whether these are actually her beliefs or she's just trying to drum up attention to help album sales, but we wish she'd take her role as a community leader more seriously!

Spreading hate is NEVER cool!

Bottom line; Lauren hill is badass. She is an artist and her lyrics are meant to provoke, which they do. Give her a break I can almost guarantee she is not anti gay.

lol there is nothing funnier than a BLACK PERSON being intolerant :D

Actually, if you are into interprating art those words could be intereprated differently depending on how you read or write them. For instance girl, men run the whole world, men. 2 a pride fiend is someone who thrives off of pride, as you can see she talks about the world being ran by greed and savagely I.E. Pride. Also lastly, which i guess this could be offensive, she is using drag queens as a metaphor for cover ups. Of course this is in my opinion. I chose to believe that not everything that mentions LGBT culture is offensive

Finally, someone with the courage to stand up for the truth.

Wow, thank you very much. I've been reading about her bravery and how the courts have tried to sentence her to 're-education' for having the nerve to speak out about the music industry. Thank you Hilton!

Some people just aren't tolerant to gay lifestyle. I disagree with the message she's trying to convey, but those are her views and she's entitled to it.

  10. rojasdiva says – reply to this

Send that hood rat to the pen where she belongs. She has a lot of nerve speaking such trash when she has had such great support from ALL communities. I used to love her, but now that she's revealed hot truly crazy and trash she is I will never purchase another song by her again….hit the bitch where it hurts! Pay your taxes scumbag!!!

Political organization is always suspect to critical study. Like you might be for women's rights( I know I am) however the via funded Cosmo, during the 60s. What appeared to be for women's rights was piggybacking in in on it. They were using it as a political ploy.

If it comes across as hate, it is hate. We'll just wait to see how she squirms out of this one and says she meant something else by it. Than she should have said something else. People are entitled to their opinions, but they should be more careful how they choose to express them. Love and understanding should always come before hate and close-mindedness. Sadly, that is just a dream.

as a gay man I am sick of people calling our lives –a "lifestyle" we have Lives just like every one else-and it is not a "preference' –when people call it a "preference–they should ask them selves are they what ever orientation they are because they **choose it*** or because it is part of who they naturally are as for lauren–she is on lots of meds –bless her heart

  18. rojasdiva says – reply to this

    re: kiki
Well, if that is so, then she should start by telling the truth about why she feels above the American tax system and all other Americans who get every day, accept and embrace others differences and live as productive and responsible citizens.

She should take the energy she puts into writing hateful lyrics and become a decent person and a responsible mother. She is a disgrace to all African American women that she pretends to speak up and out for.

And, furthermore, I would hardly call her a revolutionary act. Grow up!

  19. TruthSpeaker says – reply to this

I'm gay and I don't interpret those lines as homophobia WHAT SO EVER. "Neurotic Society" is purely poetic and she's great at injecting strong meaning over clever metaphors. She's talking about those at the top of the pyramid called human society. She's talking about the mindless dribble like yourself that she has no respect for; the media that works to confuse & un-educate the masses. She's talking about the black community and it's women that feel the need to look artificial to amuse our white counterparts that work tirelessly to make sure blacks hate their selves. She doesn't discuss her fans in her music, she only discusses those considered the Powers At Be! duhh, you obviously didn't follow her music or you would fuckin know that Perez. stop starting shit for no reason! Lauryn needs us!

  20. TruthSpeaker says – reply to this

Re: rojasdiva – A disgrace? Bitch please, learn your shit before you start spewing it from your mouth! Her life is dedicated to freeing humanity from mindless control; including african american women such as yourself who probably wears fake hair, has fake boobs and a fake booty. You're so fake and you have the nerve to call her fake for standing up against the man? FUCK YOU and your mom for not teaching you any better you ignorant black bitch!

First foremost she is not Attacking LgBT community. Throughout the century "Homosexual Ritual" have been through the politic of any Industry. Lots of actors and rappers and singer have to go through Homosexual Ritual in order to be in Secret Siciety benefit. Lauryn Hill is base on that not the individual sexual preference . That we fail as Society to address which lead to Lack of Civilizations .Do research about Homosexual Ritual that is running rapid in Hollywood , Music Industry and you will not get Mad at Lauryn Hill. She is not attacking LGBT community . why the media want to start negativity.

  26. catattack says – reply to this

AND THROW AWAY THE KEY. There's no backpedaling from this, it's pretty clear that this is just another one of Lauryn Hill's angry gospels about how messed up the world is and how much everyone else (but her) is to blame. It comes as no shock to me she's a homophobe and it's pretty evident in her lyrics. Too evident to rationalize.

"Woe is me, woe is me, it's all THE SYSTEM! It's the girly men that are responsible for this!" - NOPE, you're just a lazy and very angry asshole who has alienated everyone and is too cheap to pay taxes. Enjoy the very UNGIRLY women in prison.

Re: haywlad – " If it comes across as hate, it is hate." Uh…no…actually it isn't. This is the kind of lazy thinking and political correctness gone mad that IMHO does more to impede real change than promote it.
Those lyrics could very easily be interpreted as referencing the greed above all else ethics permeating international capitalism, reality TV culture, modern celebrity etc. etc. without having anything to do with LGBT issues whatsoever.
If it comes across as hate it is hate…God grow up!

  31. 31

Re: TruthSpeaker – You're out of your fucking mind! As a white person I can assure you that I have never 'worked tirelessly' to make black women hate themselves nor, to the best of my knowledge, have any of the white folks I know.
I tell you what though, if black women have self-esteem issues or concerns about the way they are perceived they need look no further than hip-hop and rap for the biggest obstacle in their path.
It's pretty hard to respect any group that allows themselves to be demeaned, insulted, disrespected and devalued the way rappers do to black women. Or is ho and bitch a term of endearment now?

  41. Jasmine/ poet says – reply to this

Hello, Lauryn Hill if I were to talk to your would say my name is Jasmine and I am a woman who love women.
I am inspired by your choice of words, it makes me realize that the world doesn't change.
lgbt are the very ones who buy your music and show great support.
Good luck to you and all of your issues

  42. 42

I read the lyrics to the entire song. Just to offer a different perspective: "Commerce and girl men / run the whole world men" - I've had lesbian friends express frustrations how even in the context of the LGBT community, gay men are often more favorably viewed than lesbian women. Hill could be speaking to male favoritism in general. "Greedy men and pride fiends / program TV screens" - capitalism (specifically that which even takes over media). Greed and pride go hand in hand. In context it looks like she's just talking about pride gluttons, not "pride" as in gay rights support… but pride as in a 7 deadly sin. "People stuck in dichotomies / pseudo sicko anxieties / serial criminals dressed in varieties / social transvestism / subliminal dressed up as piety" - people playing double roles, exhibiting an outside persona while engaging in the opposite behind closed doors. As for the drag queens, you got me. Until we hear the meanings from Hill herself, I think there's room for interpretation that's not as offensive as one would initially think. Maybe "girl men" isn't the most sensitively worded phrase, but I for sure think the "pride fiends" and "social transvestism" was taken out of context.

Re: catattack – the funniest part is that she didn't grow up in the ghetto. She went to school with Zach Braff. She is a liar.

  44. 44

On one last side note, in today's popular culture we recognize Jay-Z as a modern day legend. The same man who's made a career with songs filled with misogynistic terms like "b*****s" and "h**s". So only derogatory terms are only unacceptable if they're directed towards the LGBT community? Either that or language gets a pass after a certain number of records are sold.

  51. 51

I think you're way off base, Perez. How can "old world brutality" refer to the gay community? She's singing about the Wall street crowd, girl men in this instance refers to men who use women like currency. Greedy men and pride fiends, that's again talking about the vice of greed and pridefulness, entitlement, not about slamming LGBT. Sorry, Lauren's not being a homphobe here.

  52. rojasdiva says – reply to this

    Re: truthspeaker

Only an angry boy like you would say the shit you're saying. You are the type of person so intimidated by different ways of life and positive thinking that keep your "people" for being happy.
If you were any kind of man than you would realize the world is big place with many walks of life and that each deserve the freedom to live without hateful slurs being thrown them by bigots like Lauryn Hill…or worse violence.
Again, if she was sending a positive message than it would ring loud and clear, but often times cowards hide their hateful messages in slang terms that most have to decipher.
As for all the hateful things you have posted….bitch, go to be and pray that someday you'll become a man….A man who realizes that intolerance and hate of any kind are tools that scared little boys use to hide their insecurities.
    Now, go to bed….

  53. 53

Nobody has to ask you for permission to not like queers, ape face. She is as entitled to disapprove and express that disapproval as you are to express your support for it. Get over yourself, gay boy. There is no bigger hypocritical hater in the world than a liberal glitter gay, and that describes you to a T, loser.

  54. 54

Re: Ottawawriter – Co-sign. "Truthspeaker" wouldn't know the truth if it punched her in her black face. White people aren't the obstacles of the blacks; it's the blacks themselves doing it. Why would any whites make any effort when the blacks are dumb enough to do it for them? LOL

  55. Jason says – reply to this

Is it really a big shock??!! This is coming from the same woman when with the fugees said her music is only for black People and didn't want the whites listening to it!! She didn't change her views through out life, just got more ignorant! Always has been always will be.. I hope the IRS takes it all from her!

  56. 56

Never understood why people think this has Been has any kind of talent.. She had her 10 minutes twenty years ago.. Time for her to go on welfa and fade into alcoholic obscurity..

  57. 57

It's really sad that Lauryn Hill balled up her music career and threw it in the trash. I thought her Grammy Award winning album back in the 90's was just the start of her career - yet she's really not been in the music spotlight since. I'm not sure too many care at this point what she has to sing about, she's been out of the scene for 15 years.

  58. suzy q says – reply to this

I SERIOUSLY think you do not undrestand these lyrics as they are NO slams towards the gay and lesbian community.

In her term 'pride fiends' i feel she is actually speaking about men who are too proud, considering the phrase before is greedy men.

In her term "girl men" I think again this is a play on words and is not a direct hit towards gay men but more as an insult to the straight and weaker men. Yes could there be a better way to say this possibly but are we going to start censoring everything and trying to pick apart each and every lyric.

If you want to point fingers I would look at yourself first and see the kind of mess and heat you are attracting to a lyric that again is most likely non-offensive and taken out of context.

  59. seeinwitma3rdi says – reply to this

Are you really hearing and understanding what Lauryn is saying? I doubt very seriously if she has any homophobic or hateful intent in this song…actually, her lyrical and metaphors are clear…if you know anything about poetry or "MCing". Lauryn is a true artist and revolutionary talent that won't bow to the corporate ish that most of today industry feeds us thru the like of Lil Wayne and Beyonce and Kanye and Jay Z…Justin Timberlake….that lil idiot Bieber, Lauryn has real talent…listen and stop being brainwashed.

  60. Valerie Cain says – reply to this

I really don't think that she meant any of those lyrics to be offensive to LGBT culture. pride fiends can actually mean what it says…..people who are too proud. Girl men? That doesn't necessarily need to be a gay or lesbian. Lauryn is known for her controversial lyrics, but i don't think this is the case. Calm down Perez!

  63. DLS says – reply to this

Where exactly is the "hate". What defines the word in this context. Unless you write a lyric that says "All gays are awesome" you are hating? And what does the term "Pride Fiend" have to do with LGBT? It rhymes with drag queen, but nowhere do I get that it is meant to be synonymous.

  64. Politics of music says – reply to this

Lauryn didn't state hate in this verse Perez.. she stated a fact we are all aware of.. i kno ur upset cuz of the whole gay part but wat u do behind close doors is ur business.. Lauryn doesn't care about close doors and talks about wat she sees now in the industry.. being controversial isn't the point wen the controversy is always being shown and everyone else is afraid to talk about yet alone put it in a song.. if it was all butterflies but its not.. indifference's are inevitable but morals are all based on the economist

MOAR Britney meltdowns for the Perez, Huffington, ABC, CBS, MTV, CNN FAMILY to eat off of. HINT: L. BOOGIE covers that in this same song too, is it education you dislike?
    How dense ARE mutherphuckers?

No it’s that the FEW who control the MANY ’outlets’ ARE gurl-men…who -created- the likes of RuPaul both metaphorically and literally. RuPaul isn’t there cause he wanted to be…CEOs did. durr

  69. Kash says – reply to this

I Love the Comments, This is art and not everyone can recognize REAL ART, most of us are so caught up in Pop Art we can't recognize the real, she is not gay bashing, she is making us think and share dialog, that was the purpose of the song, I'm getting tired of gays always claiming gay bashing, anytime says anything about gay they go into a uproar, people have opinions either way and if they have a opinion then they are human, you sit her and talk and gossip about people a career but damn it if someone says something about a part of you, STFU

  70. 70

The words are "Commerce and GURU men", not girl men. Look it up.
LGBT folks do not have a copyright to the word "Pride", watch any reality show and you will see examples of excess pride for no apparent reason. (Why are the K sisters famous?)
Which leaves Drag Queens. Lauryn probably could have chosen better words but when taken in context, she's not totally off the mark. ESPECIALLY since she's thrown in the N word for good measure.
The song shines a light on the BS that's happening today. It's got an important message that's being missed because we are too sensitive.
Lighten up! There are real enemies out there.

  71. For real though says – reply to this

I mean really? I don't get it. Why can she have free speech? People can say whatever they want to those who think differently and have a different opinion then those that are pro lgbt but if it was vise versa, oh my! Brace yourselves you started a war. i guess its cool though since our free speech is being taken away too. No more expressing ones self and having their OWN thoughts and opinions. We all must obey and fall in line like the mindless sheeple we are sadly destined to become. How disappointing. I never thought I would live to see that day that someones opinions on this matter are considered hate speech. And dont even try to compare it to racism. 2 totally different things.

"Bloggers" like you need to get your heads out of your asses and wake up to the reality that Lauryn Hill just summarized for you in her song.
But of course, the ignorant egotistical sheep will deny all truth.
Perez, you work and are paid to spread disinformation and dramatic propaganda.
How said, it's hypocrisy at it's lowest.
    Long live Lauryn Hill!
