Taylor Swift's Rhode Island Neighbors Unhappy; Security Making Public Beach Access A 'Hassle!'

| Filed under: Legal MattersTaylor Swift

taylor swift disgruntled neighbors

The people of Watch Hill, Rhode Island do not want Taylor Swift to be their girl next door.

It seems the country singer, who spent $17 million on a beach front mansion in the area, has been causing a stir amongst locals, thanks to an increased amount of security.

A source revealed:

“Now that summer has come and people are getting ready to use the beach, people are really grumbling about having Taylor in town. Her property line is at the path to the public beach and she always has guards patrolling the area. It’s making it such a hassle.”

As if that wasn’t frustrating enough, Swiftie’s property also borders a local teen and surfer hang out spot. Now that she’s taken up residence, “her guards are always asking them to leave.”

Though we understand Swiftie’s need for extra security, given her incident with the overeager stalker fan last month, might this be a bit excessive??

The source added:

“If she wanted privacy, she shouldn’t have bought a house overlooking a public beach!”

Here are just a couple tweets from a disgruntled few living in the area:

Oh, Swiftie! Maybe you can write a song about your unhappy neighbors?!

Sounds as if the beach wall IS the property line for Swift's Retreat.

If security doesn't want folks sitting on the wall, that's the way it is, even if everyone got used to using it while the house was unoccupied for years, or under a previous owner.

Also sounds as if the public access point for the public beach is next to the Swift property line. The stories don't say that Swift's security is Blocking access, just that her property line make it 'a hassle.' Is that code language for watching you? Is that code language for not letting folks cut a corner? Is that code language for not allowing just anyone to lay out a blanket upland from the public beach on the back side of the property line wall?

It sounds like just about any silly spoiled child with a smart phone can whine and complain about access to property they don't own and have not worked for can cry and complain and drag the property owner into it. I'm not too sympathetic if security guards are observing you while you neck on the beach with your boyfriend. Such a hassle, you know, really, OMG! Get a room!

Ms Swift is such a sweet person, the time for a neighborhood cookout would be near at hand, and the complainers would probably just shut it down.

so, your source are two tweets, ooo and miranda hall if the beach is public, it's not your beach and it's not your town, bitch

FYI - the wall is not the property line for her house…. it is actually on public beach property, so technically her security has no legal right to ask people to leave it. The same is true of the surf spot. I grew up in Westerly and know members of the homeowners association in Watch Hill. Her guards are asking people to leave public space, not Taylor's space. Just FYI.

Re: Sweetly – I call B.S. on you. Self serving spoiled rich people's children in a summer playground small town, clustered around a large, empty house now refilled and alive. Pack sand.

Taylor always causes problems wherever she goes and cannot stand this whore. The community needs to band together so she will leave. Stupid bitch.

Hey Miranda Hall, it's not your town or your beach idiot. It's for the public. And if it's her property, get the hell out cause she bought it herself.

Re: Sweetly – I'm sure if this is true it will be taken care of but I seriously doubt that her security would ask people to leave public property. You need to doublecheck your sources on what is her property because it is highly unlikely that Taylor would be stupid enough to try to keep people off something public. more likely the wall marks her property line and is not part of the public beach.

Everyone has the right to feel safe in their home .Taylor has the right to keep people off her private property, especially since she has stalkers, etc. She bought the house and it is her property .

Re: QuietDanTN – Hahaha… just telling you what the deal is, guys. Trying to bring facts into the situation, but I guess I'm sorry I did. And as another FYI, the "spoiled rich people's children" actually go to the private club beach, not this public beach. This beach is full of middle-class kids who live in town all year round (not summer home kids who only spend June-Aug there). Quite simply, it's a town full of regular kids who grew up spending summers on the beach, and they really don't care if celebrities are there or not. They just want to spend time on the public beach. Conan O'Brien owns a house there, too, but he keeps a low profile and no one ever complains about him. If you don't know anything about the community, you might try listening to someone who does. Just a thought.

    14

If the wall is on her property line, I understand where she is coming from. All she needs is a lawsuit form someone sitting or climbing on the wall that then falls and hurts themselves. Makes her a sitting duck for being sued . I would ask people to stay off the wall if I were her because it opens up a huge liability if she doesn't !!

  15. QuietDanTN says – reply to this

    15

Re: tiffany – Exactly Tiffany! The public beach is generally the space between normal high tide and normal low tide. The only exception would be if there was a grant of land to the Town, which would be platted and a matter of record in the Town Hall. Ms Swift has security and attorneys to check this type of stuff out and they wouldn't be blocking folks from public areas, that's now how business is done. Additionally, she has plenty of dealing with mean girls and whisper campaigns and etc, so my money's on Taylor and her folks having it right and the gripers and freeloaders who has more ready access to other people's property while the house was vacant should be satisfied with the fruits of their own labor and talent instead of whining about property they don't own and a property owner that's gently but firmly asserting their own rights to property. As much joy as Ms Swift brings to millions — millions! — I certainly don't begrudge her a little privacy with her friends. She has so many friends that she can now accomodate at least seven of them at one time in the eight bedroom house. The neighbors that are gracious will probably be invited over for pool parties and cookouts from time to time. But, maybe not the haters. . . .

    16

I live in RI, not far from this beach, and everyone who is posting about how we are lucky to have Taylor here… really people? She bought the house, not the BEACH. it's a public beach, it has always been a public beach, she has no right to stake claim to the BEACH. Her house is her property and if she feels the need to guard it, thats fine and her business. But SHE is the one who is acting like the entitled one, nobody is asking her to be there. I for one don't care who she is. She has no more right to that beach than everybody else who lives here. And just because she dropped 17mil on the property doesn't miraculously give her the right to decide who or when people can step on the beach that just so happens to border her property. If she didn't want to be so close to the public, and wanted privacy, there are plenty of other places she could have chosen. Being a "celebrity" does not equal entitlement above everyone else.

The ironic thing is that neither one of the people tweeting about Taylor live in Watch Hill, they live in Conneticut ! its not your beach or your town. Taylor has the right to keep people off her property, she is legally liable if someone falls and gets hurt . You bet their ass they would sue her!!

Re: GirlInRIRe: GirlInRI – I don't remember anyone saying she was blocking or denying access to the beach. She has huge liability issues if she allows people to hang out on a wall that is part of her property, she cant open herself up to being sued if someone gets hurt on her property. Sorry that is the truth.

  21. Shelby says – reply to this

    21

Re: Sweetly – Are you sure that you know her property lines? legally I don't think she can allow people on her property for liability reasons.

  22. GirlInRI says – reply to this

    22

Re: linda – I agree her PROPERTY but being here, things are a little different than people might think. It's not just the wall, and it would be fine if it were. There's a public access point near her home, and she has guards blocking/guarding that. And points on the public beach around her property. Again, I have NO PROBLEM with her defending her PROPERTY, i agree with the liability. But the beach isn't hers and she shouldn't be trying to keep people from enjoying it for her own benefit.

Having flashlights and insult throw our way whole out way by two bit inbred security gaurds that are not cops is quite insulting, she's a 22 year old girl on some pathetic power trip shit. The property up to the fence is owned by the department of homeland security, nobody cares about her. She makes terrible music and own the least appealing house in my favorite part of the world. I'm not rich. I listen to rap(like Sean price) not drake or any other garbage (including Kanye) she's a nuisance

If the wall in question is on Taylor's property she has every right to say whether someone can lean against, sit on or whatever, she sees fit. Wouldn't you expect the same if you bought it?
Just because you have been using it forever without anyone saying anything because the house has been empty does not give you sovereign right to use it, sure you can be upset and complain but theres not much you can do.
And i think her security team is on a hightened sense of awareness after the recent stalker attempt by that one guy plus i think she will be spending more time up there this summer so they are being more cautious. How about you give it a little time for everyone to settle in before you judge.

    33

OMG why is she so spoiled?? 17 million on a home that could have gone to charity! Plus, I read in one of her interviews that she's almost never home. And she's single!! I'm not jealous of her luxurious lifestyle at all, in fact I feel really bad for her. No love from guys so she spends her life savings' on a mansion instead.

  34. QuietDanTN says – reply to this

    34

Re: Melissa – Regarding Ms Swift and charity: She tithes to charity (if you know what that means — google it), a significant percentage, and doesn't crow about it to the media. She co-wrote Ronan with Ronan's mom, and assigned ALL the royalties to charity and Ronan's mom gets half as co-writer, which also goes to charity. The floods in Nashville a few years ago — Taylor donated $500,000 to the charity, more than any other artist. Her final dress rehearsal for the Speak Now tour was opened to the public and the million dollars plus gate was donated to Tornado victims. Time with Taylor Swift is probably the Number One request for Make a Wish from desperately ill little girls, and Taylor spends a LOT of her time visiting and playing her music in Children's Hospitals across the country. . . . I don't know what all her plans are for the Watch Hill Harkness House, but I doubt we've heard all her plans for it. I don't think she's going to keep it all to herself, as she must be elsewhere so often. I'm thinking you're going to see some interesting uses for the house — who knows who will be guested in the house? I don't think the house is going to be used solely as a occasional-use private retreat — I am willing to wait and see!

If that were my town and my beach, I'd just be like "listen you fat head shit for brains…. Are you a cop? Because if you're not a cop, I don't give a fuck about Swift, her fucking daddy, and I don't give a shit fuck about you… if you don't shut up and fuck off… I'll smash your god damn head in with this aluminum bat right here beside me, and if I have to, if you fuck with me hard enough, I'll fuck you up with this big knife here… K? NOW FUCK OFF, TUBBY!!!!"

  36. MB says – reply to this

    36

I kind of agree that if she needs all that security, a whole gang of fat head morons on patrol, and she does, she should fuck off out of peoples faces. She is not an average person, and she shouldn't be around average people. That's the way she wanted it, that;s the way she got it, that's the way she should live with it. I'd be pissed if her life was imposing in mine like that. You don't change other peoples lives or put burden on them, to suit yours, especially if you're the outsider.

If Taylor didn't own that area, I'm sure she wouldn't have her guards there to protect her or watch the other people.
LOL if Taylor Swift doesn't own the area where her guards are protecting, I don't think it'd be a 'problem' for her to purchase that wall or property line or land or whatever.
Anyways, those bitches are lucky to be living in the same town as Taylor, being able to be feet away from her house, maybe lucky enough to see her on the beach hanging out someday. She's a Queen. Fuck, when she was on the RED tour two hours away from where I live I was screaming cause she was two hours. Everyone should be happy when Taylor comes to down. They need to quit their bitching. Why don't these people complain to the proper authorities or whoever is in charge of policing this public beach? It would solve a lot of problems and if it takes a lawsuit to resolve it then so be it. Taylor if she is not careful, might find herself in the same position as Justin Bieber and his neighbors at war with each other. I don't think she wants to be in the position of living somewhere where obviously people don't want her there.

Re: Ultimate Swiftie – At least your comment gave me a good giggle. So because she "worked hard" and "earned a grammy" she has the right to keep people off public property? I think not. How old are you? 12? If her guards are doing something they shouldn't be and she has "oh so much money" then how about you fire them and get yourself some new ones instead of using the guards as her scapegoat and claiming stupidity "well I didn't know they were doing that… wasn't me". I repeat, her property is one thing, there's no reason the guards can't be placed within her property line to protect it, including the wall itself, but they have no need stretching their reach to the beach.

Re: sara – My father has a huge farm and lost a right of way from a house being built on the border. He was livid. He couldn't afford the legal fees to fix it. He lost access from one road leading to his land. Like almost a mile of trail got gobbled up because it got blocked. Don't know the legal mumbo jumbo of what actually happened, but losing it doesn't appear to be outside the realm of possibilities. Especially when there's big bucks involved from someone that might want to take it. I don't think she'd do something THAT awful though.

Re: matt brown – Well that got fixed fast. Guess she's not as big a stinker as everyone thought. Very cool. Unlike "Mel" Mel would be ok with her tazing everyone in 1 mile radius.

I bet a lot of the angry commenters are enjoying that beach right now without being bugged by anyone. LOL! Probably won't take long for everyone to calm down. Looks like Taylor addressed the the concerns pretty quickly from Matt Brown is saying.
I'm guessing they won't be back to jump around around anymore and are finding out Taylor really isn't out to screw with anyone as they are happily having fun there. Bet she'll even make a few of her enemies fans soon.

Taylor purchased the property, including the seawall. I've lived in Watch Hill and they are private beaches. The house might have been a free-for-all in the past but Taylor rightfully owns the land and has the right to be weary with strangers parading on her property, especially after having stalker issues!

Re: Mike – Very true. As she always does, it was handled properly and all should be good in the neighborhood. She had to be precautious as she's already had stalker issues and it was a safety protocol, not her picking on the neighbors. Maybe she can finally get settled in and enjoy the new house :)

Re: KatieT – Sorry Katie. If you were ever there at all, you'd know it's a public beach including an easement on the side of her house to access it. Anyway, Mike is right. She seems to be handling it well without overzealous fans like yourself. Being cool is important. No need to have people like you there screaming, "MINE! MINE! MINE!" If you owned that house. Fortunately, Taylor knows this. You don't.

Exactly. I feel so bad this damn tabloid quoted me. There WAS an issue with the wall about a week ago. It's been rectified to the fullest extent. Now my only issue are beach goers littering. I'm about to go clean that up tbh

I live in RI, and I went up to see the house today. beach access was ABSOLUTELY no hassle at all. It made no difference what so ever. The security guards even told me where to go to take the best pictures.

Thank GOD she got rid of that "Papers please!" vibe that was stirring everything up down there.

Thank you Taylor. You've gained another fan here.

I have lived in watch hill all of my life and it is fully understandable why people are annoying that she has moved in. The security in the town has been hyped up, people aren't allowed to go to places they have been accustomed to their whole life, and going to the normal public beach isn't the same… all because a normal person with a fancy name has moved into town. The town itself is very wealthy and we pay taxes to use these facilities, and even though her property boarders that wall, it is not the boarder and people should be allowed to do what they want. there are sharp rocks that go up to her property, so its unlikely anyone would be able to get up there anyways. the whole thing is rediculous.
