What if this had been you? After all, Paula apologized, you defended your homophobic slurs.
If she was a black rapper or actor, this would be a resume enhancement, and she would be lauded and rewarded for using that word 25 times in a song or interview. This double standard that exists in the media/speech police is wrong and evil.

Paula Deen has been treated unfairly and absolutely eviscerated by the media. Who would be willing to enter into a deposition every single word they've EVER said? She's human just like the rest of us and imperfect - we've all said and done things we regret. If this woman was black, the situation would be a non-issue. Why the double standard?
If I'm fat, and another fat person calls me fat, it's not as offensive. If a skinny person talks about my weight, It would be more likely that i would be offended. Think about it. ever seen two huge people pointing the finger at who called who fat? no! Just like you hear girl-friends calling each other bitches. But if you ever witnessed an outsider making that same comment, it caused a problem because the "offender" is not apart of that group. People get offended when you don't come from a commonplace and you make comments. That's how it is. And that how it will always be. I play by the rules. Paula said and did something behind closed doors. But why did she feel the need to expose this part of her life? It was unnecessary! She's older, but no fool. Instead of taking the n word from black people, she should have followed the mantra ,"No SNITCHING"! She ruined her own career by telling on her self, not for using the n word.

The damage to her career/finances is much greater than the 1.2 mil that was being sought. She, (or her PR people) should have known this and KILLED IT!

Re: Cut and dry – Know a good way to end all the drama surrounding certain words? Don’t use them. Period. You can use 100 different analogies to try to explain why words are only correct to use in certain situations, but the ideology behind it will still remain completely hypocritical and asinine. There are so many words to choose from to address one another with that don’t have negative connotations.

Once Paula hires a PR team that knows how to do damage control, she’ll follow in the footsteps of many of the other celebrities that have used the N-word and continued on successfully. (i.e. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Eminem, Paris Hilton, Charlie Sheen, John Mayer, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Mel Gibson - just to name a few)

I absolutely agree that the words should not be used AT ALL. Not just the "N" word but any word(s) that can be construed as derogatory, offensive or hateful.
BUT since she did in fact say it, her PR people should have handled this MUCH differently. She did not seem sincere in either interview (I seriously think that she thinks she did nothing wrong).
It was a PR nightmare from the moment it became public and they should NOT have allowed that to happen. Period.
I'm sure she was (is) paying them good money to minimize just this kind of negative attention and and protect her "empire".
It was a stupid move and should not have been allowed to happen.

She did not just decide to come out and say "Hey y'all, just wanted you to know once upon a time I used the "n" word!!!!! She DID NOT "tell on herself" other than she testified in a deposition. And, just in case you are unaware of how depositions work - you HAVE to tell the truth. It is just like sworn testimony in court! If she lied in her dep, and it came out she could be found guilty of perjury. Know ALL the facts before you make STUPID comments.

HOWEVER, you are missing one VERY important point. Paula Deen did NOT have to testify at the deposition!
She could have offered the plaintiff a settlement. If Paula had never made the racist comments, that would be one thing. Since we KNOW that she made them, via her OWN testimony, she would have been better served with settling the case - with a FIRM confidentially agreement!
Her PR people failed her, plain and simple.
Who of us can say that we've NEVER said anything offensive/racist/prejudicial 30/35 years ago!
