We're so glad this sad process is going smoothly.
James Gandolfini passed away just days ago while in Italy, but thanks to a lot of officials, his body is being flown back to New York City.
While this process normally takes quite a bit longer, things have been expedited for the family so that his funeral can take place this week.
Family spokesperson Michael Kobold spoke about the current situation:
"On behalf of the Gandolfini family, I would like to thank the Italian authorities for all the assistance they have rendered in expediting the formalities necessary to repatriate James Gandolfini’s remains to the United States. We are fully aware that this process usually takes seven days and we are extremely grateful for their efficiency in dealing with this matter. It has been our privilege to be guests in your beautiful country, despite the difficult circumstances. We sincerely thank you."
The family also thanked the U.S. government, United Airlines and HBO for their help and support during all this.
His body is expected to arrive in NYC on Monday with the funeral to take place on Thursday. The ceremony will reportedly take place that morning at Cathedral of St. John the Divine in upper Manhattan.
Our thoughts are with James' family and friends during this difficult time.
