Lauryn Hill Thinks Reverse Racism Is 'Ridiculous!' Blames Jail Time On Historical Racism!

| Filed under: Legal MattersLauryn Hill

laurynhill

On the day before going to prison for three months for unpaid taxes, Lauryn Hill went on at great length in an open letter on Tumblr about racism and, in turn, reverse racism.

Here's what she had to say:

"The concept of reverse racism is flawed, if not absolutely ridiculous. Most, if not all of the negative responses from people of color toward white people, are reactions to the hatred, violence, cruelty and brutality that they were shown by white people for centuries."

Lauryn went on to further question the legitimacy of reverse racism based on historical context:

"In order to justify reverse racism one would have to first create an even playing field, undo the generations of torture, terror, and brutality, and then judge whether or not a non-white person is in fact a racist."

Then, Lauryn veers her letter towards her own legal woes for failing to pay taxes on 1.8 million dollars of income, and blames it on failing to pay taxes on 1.8 million dollars of income historical racism. Here's the quote:

I shuddered during sentencing when I kept hearing the term ‘make the IRS whole’… make the IRS whole, knowing that I got into these very circumstances having to deal with the very energies of inequity and resistance that created and perpetuated these savage inequalities. The entire time, I thought, who has made black people whole?!

And finally:

"Clearly, the institution seeks to hide its own criminal history at the expense and wholeness of the abused, who ‘acting out’ from years of abuse and mistreatment, reflect the very aggression that they were exposed to."

Man, this has not been a good year for the IRS. First, the scandal. Next, Lauryn Hill says they're oppression incarnate in her Tumblr post (CLICK HERE to read it all!). What's next? The IRS blowing our money on a trip to Vegas?

I'm seeming to have problems with this statement. I'm confused on the fact is she calling all white people racist? Or is she using history to make everyone seem racist? I'm honestly a little confused by her statement.

Re: Charlie2013 – I think she's just an idiot who thinks she's making a huge, impacting statement when really she's just rambling on sounding dumb. She didn't pay her taxes and she got caught so she seems to be trying to find the most far fetched excuse for it. Makes no sense.

F Lauryn Hill. I0 years ago I jammed out to Fugees cd all the time then she went on a rant about not wanting WHITE PEOPLE to buy her album. Fine bitch. I didn't anyway, I stole it. She has her head so far up her own @$$ that she's not in reality. it's great to understand and feel emotionally connected to our history. but its just that. history. Never forgotten but with all due respect why should she act like anyone did anything to her? Im sorry her great great great great granny should be the one bitching and receiving roll out carpet treatment today ( if she was around ) NOT LAURYN. Her anger about all that racism today is as relevant as me being mad for it. and Im white. We are lucky as a nation we have moved on and are opening more doors today. she loves to complain and talk BS like she is so smart and politically correct. If you read this Lauryn, HONEY, step down from your make believe pedestal… I'd say because your not standing at the top of it anymore…. but then again you never really did. A shame, such talent… THEN YO HEAD GOT BIG. Justice has been served sweetheart. enjoy America.

Everything out of Lauren's mouth is always about RACE. She needs to lighten up. When was the last time she was shackled up in chains?

What a stupid fucking bitch. Just because whites were cruel to blacks BACK IN THE DAY doesn't make it okay to be racist against them. Get the fuck over it and get some therapy.

  6. 6

She is delusional. Reverse racism does NOT exist because nothing is reversed, it is racism through and through, regardless of which side it comes from. I used to work at a check cashing place and this gentleman came in to cash a check. I was, due to store policies, unable to cash the check for him, and he asked me if it was because he was black… there is your problem. I am not racist, I was simply following store policy and couldn't verify his check, but in his mind, because I was white, I wouldn't cash his check. Who is the racist there? I would say HIM. Lauryn Hill can go fuck herself.

  7. 7

Oh, and another thing, Ms. Hill; following your own train of thought, you should be racist against your own race (even possible) because they are the ones who treated you like property and sold your ancestors into slavery. Your own ancestors did that. Not all the blame is on white people. And, for the record, SOME of the white people treated their "slaves" like family. And furthermore, ever hear of the fucking civil war? I forget, who fought that, oh yea, mainly white people (along side black people) fighting to free slaves. Funny how people only remember what they want to, and leave out the parts that don't justify their horrible behavior. /end rant

Ms. Hill is a prime example of what is wrong with the opinions and perspectives on racism today. Racism affects all cultures, all races, and she herself has demonstrated in interviews from years past actions, words, and attitudes of racism towards white people. She makes broad generalizations and sticks to history far too long in her argument. Racism still exists when people continually credit history with returning. The country, the culture, is trying to progress, and in some ways is, but people like Ms. Hill need to get off their soapbox and open their eyes to the realities she lives in. If it weren't for white people her "fan" base would be dwindled considerably. Her paycheck would be smaller. In her words, she doesn't "Need white people to buy her music."Give me a break and grow up.

Can we grow up and be responsible/stop using excuses for YOUR shortcomings in life? Racism is NOT LIMITED to one group of people-it's always been around from the beginning of time in every culture in every corner of the earth. Let us remove this garbage message of hers to reveal at what is left: You, like everyone else in this country, must pay your taxes. Period. Her argument is weak at best. I am so tired of hearing this weak pissy-ass excuse. Grow up! I have absolutely lost all respect for this lady. What a shame!

    18

It's still racism though. Racism by ANY PERSON OF ANY COLOUR can never be justified. So what if white people from two hundred years ago enslaved blacks? Of course it wasn't right, but it's not present-day white people's fault. In fact, by saying shit like this ^ and discriminating against whites, you're only encouraging racism on both sides.

  19. 19

There is no 'reverse racism'….racism is racism. I read her post, and she is clearly knows what she is talking about. But it seems to me she wants to blame all the 'acting' out of blac ks on years of oppression/violence/ra pe etc. But you are not a slave, nor have you ever been one and while it may be harder for you and you face things I cannot understand, you can choose to not rob a bank or kil l or rape just as w hite ppl can and blac k ppl, brown, Asian, etc can be racist too, ANYONE CAN. Lets also stop acting like whites were the only one colonizing, I believe the Asians have quite a long history of conquering, mu rder, etc. Lets ALL do better. And lets not forget the Indigenous ppl of this country who were also rap ed mur dered, pillaged, plundered broken apart, etc, it wasn't just blacks lets think of the Natives too.

She states, "Most, if not all of the negative responses from people of color toward white people, are reactions to the hatred, violence, cruelty and brutality that they were shown by white people for centuries." Negative responses can't be based on historic events that not one white person living now had anything to do with! That is so inherently and academically flawed that it sounds like a knee jerk excuse for ingrained ignorant behavior towards your fellow man now matter what color, now. Unless she gets past that and recognizes that, she will never grow.

  33. TheBlackLogic says – reply to this

    33

Clearly, NO ONE who posted a comment read the entire statement. While, at the MAX, some of this was biased, it was VERY true. Aside from the taxation nonsense that this country touts as an "obligation" (right, obligated to pay for all that was stolen over throughout the centuries by our "FOUNDING FATHERS), everything rang loud and clear. She is not talking about physical slavery, she's speaking of indoctrinated racism. Which is so inherent. Not by any intrinsic attribute that was passed down the white lineage, but by a perpetuation of barriers and contention that STILL exist today. While I wouldn't understand any privileged, white person to understand this concept, I had reserved a semblance of hope that they wouldn't be so naive to think that the condescending idea of "white supremacy" still lives on today. Lauryn Hill has made VERY valid points. VERY. Whites have perpetuated barbaric crimes for CENTURIES (i.e. Jewish Holocaust, WWI, WWII, Japanese internment, resettlement of the Native Americans). They manipulated every society that has walked the face of the Earth. And then, they perpetuated all the affluence they had stolen. YET, it BAFFLES me how they still insist that "blacks in America have a sense of entitlement" and they "blame whitey". "Whitey" should blame "whitey", because the simple truth is: Whites have been responsible for the most bloodshed, the most hatred, the move manipulation, and the most thievery in history. Simple as that.

The actions of white people after slavery & the jim crow laws were horrifying, BUT to lump ALL white people into that group is racist. My ancestors did not live on this continent during that time, in fact we immigrated from Poland 3 generations ago, my grandparents were kids when they came over with their parents. same goes for my fathers side, none of my ancestors owned slaves, we all lived/live in the north & had nothing to do with slavery or the god awful racism that continued/still continues today. I can absolutely see why many black people would still feel hatred towards whites for all that their ancestors endured bc it truly was horrific unimaginable injustice that went on and on by racist bigots but not everyone who is while stems from those evil souless fools. sometimes I wish I was asian or something just so I wouldnt get lumped into a catagory based only on my skin color. im sure thats how everyone feels with the stupid steriotypes & racism that continues on today. unfortunately this country was pretty much founded on black slavery & idk if we will ever fully heal.

anyways I think this bitch is full of shit, she didnt live during those times what happened to her ancestors is BS but it didnt happen to her so stop blaming racism for everything, when u pull the race card too much it takes the seriousness out of it. Sorry but u cant blame failing to pay taxes on racism. stfu

Just like many white people in this country don't have to have experienced the "atrocities of centuries of pillaging" committed by their ancestors, and yet, lo and behold, many generations down the line, there are whites who STILL benefit from the wealth gained by such acts. The [Lauryn's] point is simple to understand (maybe a little harder to digest if you don't want to): There is so much that has been set into play since slavery and up until now that is ridiculously anti-black. I'm a black man that would NEVER ask for an apology because I am nobody's victim. But, it BURNS ME UP when white people today saunter along like the very history of this nation wasn't built on two things: 1) The subjugation of blacks and 2) The proliferation of the white race, their power and wealth.

Re: TheBlackLogic – Blacks are discriminated against? I believe things such as the NAACP, a black President, Affirmative Action, etc. balance the scales. Every group of people is downtrodden in some way for things such as ethnicity, creed, religion, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, family status, gender, disability, weight, etc. History is history and yes, it's the foundation for where we are now but your comments are absurd as you're condoning poor behavior and crediting good behavior relative to the amount of melanin someone has in their skin. Lauryn didn't pay her taxes. Plain & simple. If she'd said she didn't pay them because she's a Christian and Chrisitans are under huge fire at the moment for their anti-gay stance would you give her a pass? No. You wouldn't. It's simply because you're black that you identify with her that you're letting her ramblings blur the root issue here and the issue here is that she didn't pay her taxes. This has nothing to do with race but Lauryn is trying to evade the issue and she's succeeding because people like you are getting excited about what she's saying about racism and she's leading you away from the fact that she didn't pay her taxes. If she killed someone and said it was due to blacks' history of oppression would you say "I understand her point". Of course not. She broke the law, she's being punished, end of story.

Lauryn, don't you ever get tired of playing the victim? I mean really… This country gives ANYONE of any color or ethnic group the chance to do well in America. I actually can't stand when you talk this way. Our county, yours and mine, is so far progressed than most any other country. No, America is not perfect, but I love this country, and obviously you don't.. Almost every generation today in this county have had the same opportunities, but it's whether you embrace education and the family to give you the basis for a great foundation.. There are many poor whites in my area with the same attitude of poor blacks.. "Give me something for free. I don't want to work. I will have as many babies as I like even though I don't have a job and can't support them… Again, there are thousands of poor whites in this area with that attitude. What you should be doing instead of whining and playing the victim is pay the rightful taxes you owe, get out there and make a difference in young girls' lives to encourage responsibility instead of victimhood and the bad white people… America is there is help everyone make it. There are so many examples of great black leaders, but I'm guessing you think they are Uncle Tom's… Shame on you Lauryn.. You were given awesome talent by God but you want to be a bitter woman…. truly sad..

However, too many people use other's hatred and ignorance as an excuse for their own hatred and ignorance (or in Lauryn's case, to not pay her taxes). If I let other poeple's racist thoughts cloud my judgement, I would not have married the most wonderful man I ever met. He just so happens to be white. It's sad that in 2013, my husband and I still get hate from all sides; black…white…it doesn't matter. Lauryn Hill is another one of those sad cases of an artist who is insanely talented, but severely misguided and would fair better if they kept their thoughts to themselves. She is wrong on every level on this issue. There can be no progress, no moving forward, if one continues to obsess over the past and use it as a crutch for bad behavior. Remembering is one thing, we should NEVER forget those times, but we should also never forget that that is the PAST and many white people today a- had nothing to do with that, and b- are not harboring any hatred towards other races. Times have changed, it's time to change with them Lauryn Hill.

I am white and I am from the south and generations of my family are from the south so the truth is there may be someone in my bloodline that not only condoned slavery but had slaves and that makes me so sad, but again there is nothing I can do about that. I work in an office that is majority black women and I love my job and I love my coworkers and we are the best of friends, I learn so much from them everyday about the job and about life and we talk about our kids and parenting skills and advice, and they are just my friends. I can't change history but I can hope for a better future where we all get to know each other and are friends based on our common interests. Re: Kiwi73 – (post #7) I just told my husband that I am so shocked I cannot gather my thoughts together to respond to this. You said what I thought and I thank you for it. I am an Australian. Nevertheless I know American civil war history fairly well and I know that many white Americans lost their lives to rid of slavery for good. Thanks to those soldiers, and just plain folk even, all the African Americans can make enough and as much as millions of white Americans to make their lives endurable. We all know what hard yakka is! Many of black Americans along the white Americans have privilege to make so much that just their taxes will amount to $1.8 m! I think it's outrageous that many people won't make this much working their whole lives yet one person owes this much in taxes and dares to complain. We all pay taxes, no matter where in the world we live. Using events in history that happened century(ies) ego, to commit a crime and attempt to get away with it, is low, VERY low. It's an insult to all people who fought and died for the likes of this Lauryn Hill so they can enjoy the benefits of being equal with the rest of their country folk. Shame on you, Ms. Hill! I am giving my full support to white Americans when they strike back, so to speak, to protect THEIR right to free speech. Note that I DO NOT approve of belittling anyone based on the colour of their skin, but I will not sit quiet when a black person calls me "white trash" and I WILL call them back as "black bustard". There, an eye for an eye. Fair is fair. But hey! I can just hear all you right minded assholes excusing the black person for their foul language and crucifying me for simply retorting back for they said to me. Simply because I happen to be white. Now who is the racist?

Re: souley – "Proud, black woman"? HA! I find it funny that you found it valid to mention how much of a proud, black woman you are. Usually, when you have to assert and reassert that you're of a particular breed, you aren't. I'm glad you found your, "Great, White Hope". I'm glad he saved you as, "the man of your dreams". You tout how lucky you are to be such a "proud, black woman who found the [white] man of your dreams". You're pathetic. You think you're any less than black because you've found the man of your dreams? Or is it you think you're any more than black because you've "gotten over it"? What have you gotten over? Let's examine it. Whites enslaved your ancestors, broke their families…not with any other goal in mind other than BREAKING LINEAGES. They redefined your customs, stole your heritage and molded you into the, "proud, assimilated, black woman" you are today. But, you got over it…You're a moron.

Re: TheBlackLogic – You missed my whole point and jumped straight to assumptions. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. First of all, asfaras asserting "my breed" goes, I did find it valid as I am not face to face with you or anyone else who may read my comment, and it is a discussion of race. Btw, you do realize that posting under a name like The Black Logic seems a bit more assertive then anything I've written. Secondly, who said I needed saving? Has my life been better since meeting my husband? Yes. But any person with a loving partner would say the same. I didn't run around looking for a white boy, and he wasn't experiencing a bit of "jungle fever". We're just people who love each other. Lastly, (and the entire reason why I commented in the first place) how can you change the past? Despite what you obviously believe, I am not an idiot, nor am I ignorant. I know the road that has lead here. But I can't change that. I could be blinded by anger like you seem to be, calling people I don't know morons. Or I can live my life and turn the other cheek when necessary. Maybe I shouldn't have said get over it. What I should have said is, be the bigger man (or person since I don't know if you're a man or woman).

Re: Souley – There is no "bigger man" and definitely much to "get over". I am a black man. And, no, I haven't been subjected to the injustices of physical bondage, but I am a product of the history of my race. I am a product of centuries of systematic racism that has CRIPPLED my race severely. I was angry and I apologize for calling you a moron. But, and this is no justification for calling you as such, to have families broken beyond repair for centuries and, as a consequence, decimated the black family we know today, it infuriates me. Once more, I am looking for NO recompense from any white man because I am not their victim. But, to look at how fractured our race is because their histories and identities were destroyed, I cannot help but be jaded by such a hateful race. And Lauryn Hill has the right idea. When you oppress a people with such brutality for CENTURIES, that is all they come to know. It saddens me that we have been reduced to such a jarred race by their hands. And u ask us to "get over it". Sad state…

She seems bitter to have been caught by the IRS which seems to be why she is venting about race. Racism is still very prevalent in our society, it is just less obvious today. Just look at ghettos of NYC, it's basically segregation. Ghettos look like crap compared to other parts of the city because the city doesn't care about cleaning them up. Don't get me started on the criminal justice system targeting young black men. Racism is so ingrained into our society.

Anyways, this was NOT the right time to open her mouth about racism. She is in trouble for tax evasion. It had nothing to do with race. This just makes her look so bitter.

    Re: Bella2u

Whites did not die to end slavery. The war wasnt fought for slaves. You are from Australia and probably have not experienced life in the states. You think every is treated equally here? It's not true. White people are still treated better in society than non whites. There's something called "white priveledge". Look it up if you're interested.

I do agree that lauryn hill should be ashamed for what she has said. Other than being completely ungrateful and irresponsible, she is also very bitter

I think you need to learn a little history, whites were slaves too. Blacks were SOLD into slavery by their own kind. You were never a slave so get that fucking chip off your shoulder and stop being a whiney victim.

Reverse Racism is ridiculous. Sorry, but it is not the same. Not everything relates to everything else in a 50/50 manner. It is about the power behind the beliefs and the reasons that people feel the way they do. The way that Black people have been treated and continue to be treated in this country will produce a negative feeling to the group who does it. This is not racism. Racism is unfounded, unprovoked hatred for hatred's sake.
