The Lone Ranger Galloped Over By Despicable Me 2; Weekend Box Office Numbers Are WEAK!

Looks like Silver didn't hi, yo, or away this weekend on the silver screen…

Instead, Despicable Me 2 galloped over The Lone Ranger at the box office earning nearly $60 million to Lone Ranger's $19.5 million. After a weak opening, we hoped that the flick would rally this weekend, but it continued to falter.

And with face paint costs production costs rising over $250 million, this might make Disney rob a train think twice about greenlighting projects that seem like a sure bet.

As for Johnny Depp, we're bummed out that this might mean we won't get to see him as Tonto again, but we're crossing our fingers that this will make some serious wampum overseas.

And of course we fully expect another fourteen Pirates of the Caribbean films!

Hollywood fails yet again with a big budget movie….can't believe it cost'em ~$250 million to make that shit.

    Re: Tnorris

Agreed! What a waste of $$$! Depp's Tonto looks like Edward Scissorhands and Jack Sparrow had a lovechild they raised in a costume shop, and Armie Hammer is not well-known enough to bring in the masses!
It should have been a smaller film with Depp as the Lone Ranger, and an actual Native American as Tonto…

What does it take to be a critic? Nothing. What credentials are needed to do a move reivew? Nothing. What schooling does one need to be a critic or reviewer? Nothing. Why else would The Lone Ranger have a 70% audience liking on Rotten Tomatoes compared to their 24%? DON'T LISTEN TO THE KNOW NOTHING CRITICS!! Get out there see the film and decide for yourselves before letting these people brainwash you from seeing a really entertaining movie and an enjoyable get away from every day life. The movie is fantastic in every way!!!!! Lots of people saw it who saw it came back with family and friends (including myself) and they also loved it. If you go and you like it then spread the word in every way you can.

Oh, yeah,,right and i guess everyone would have gone to see a nobody native american play Tonto. Numbers were low because the critics are idiots. So is everyone else who passes judgment who doesn't even see the movie themselves to make their own decision.

I did not read any reviews and decided on my own not to see Lone Ranger. Among other things, Johnny Depp's costume with some kind of fur on his head looked stupid. Also I am old and grew up with the original TV series, so I am a tough critic to please indeed.

It wasn't all that, to be honest. Definitely don't need to be putting out a Lone Ranger 2.

Re: teeter totter – f.y.i. - the "fur" on Tonto's head is a crow. It has been said that native Americans regard the crow as spiritual bird and thus guides Tonto on his journeys. In the movie "The Crow" the bird was a connection between the living and the dead for a man who relied upon it for vengeance.
