Same-Sex Marriage Legalized In The UK!

uk same sex marriage

Blimey! Both the House of Commons and the House of Lords have just signed off on a bill that legalizes same-sex marriage! YES! Very soon, any Union Jack will be able to marry Bob's your Uncle!

On top of that, the bill was just given the royal assent by the Queen, which means the law is finally official! All England needs is the royal baby to be born today, and this might become "their finest hour."

Although the scope of the bill is somewhat limited by excluding Northern Ireland and Scotland, and adding a stipulation that the Church of England won't perform any same sex marriage ceremonies, the bill also includes protections for married citizens who consider themselves to be transgender!

In addition, same sex couple will be able to start tying the knot in the summer of 2014!

Overall, this is AH-mazing news! You rule Britannia!! Uh, can we rejoin as colonies or what?

"Although the scope of the bill is somewhat limited by excluding Northern Ireland and Scotland, and adding a stipulation that the Church of England won't perform any same sex marriage ceremonies …" So in other words, it's a totally hollow "victory" for you homos. It's so limited in scope that it's worthless. The English government and the monarch STILL reject you deviants by ensuring that the Church of England won't perform the ceremonies. And you applaud this. You are worse than idiotic.

Re: Wow Are You An Idiot – It's not perfect, I agree, but it is a big step in reaching full equality for all. Why shouldn't we celebrate this? A lot of us never thought it would ever get to this stage! And dont think that we will be quiet just because this has bill passed, we continue to fight for what is right and continue to speak out until everyone in the UK (And beyond) gains full equality! ^_^

Re: Wow Are You An Idiot – I'm not gay but i'm English and I'm proud of the decision, I'm also proud that respect for the churches views have been maintained, churches in this country are never filled or even a quarter filled, their very much filled with old ladies and gentleman, nice people, but the religion won't be here in twenty years, it'll just be a venue for births marriages and deaths. I don't know a single person my age, nor have i ever met a person my age.. and i'm from a good home, who attends the church of england every week. Gay marriage will outlive practiscing christians in this country.. I assure you of that

don't be dispirited that it's not going to be legal in Scotland or Northern Ireland yet, we have a tendancy to test out something in one part of Britain before the others follow. Once the idiots have realised England and Wales haven't fallen into the sea for allowing this then the others will follow suit. And for the rest of it Mrs_Bathscum says it perfectly

Re: Mrs_Bathscum – i totally agree with this comment - (unlike in the US) church attendance is very very rare by the vast majority of Brits. We only go for christenings, weddings and funerals - thats about it. The much older generation and migrants from more traditional cultures are really the only people who still practice religion in any numbers. Therefore, same sex marriage is really no big deal to the vast majority in the UK. Gay's already had full legal rights (under civil partnerships) which absolutely nobody objected to. The new law is only a change in name. The BBC has barely covered this story - people are generally indifferent (gay and straight) and (unlike the french) we will not be protesting in our millions on the streets. more like having a party, getting very 'pissed' and celebrating equality for all.

Re: Wow Are You An Idiot – - neither the monarch nor the government has any control over the Church of England in practice. They are free to go on believing that women are inferior to men, and that LGBT people are inferior to straight cis people, making themselves more and more irrelevant to society. Hopefully the government will eventually cut ties with them altogether.

Also, the Scottish government is in the process of introducing their own same-sex marriage bill which is certain to pass. Unfortunately, Northern Ireland's largest party is full of neanderthals and its system of government requires a special kind of cross-community supermajority for bills to pass - there is a possibility of a successful court challenge, however.
