naturally = without drugs (aka epidural, etc)
vaginally = it came out of her hoo-ha (instead of a c-section)
That would be super-awesome of her if she did it naturally!!! More women should. Hopefully, she will breastfeed too!
It is neither commendable or not-commendable for a woman to give birth naturally. C-sections, for the vast majority of women, are decided by their doctors. Yes, there are some people who choose to have c-sections for whatever perceived convenience there might be. Let me tell you, it's a major surgery, not "convenient' at all. What about the women who induce labor before the baby's ready but give birth vaginally, to fit into their schedule? Commendable? More so than a woman who's waited until the baby was ready, yet needs to have a c-section b/c she and the baby have labored too long? Let's stop judging women on how they give birth and just be happy that they deliver healthy, thriving babies.
Perez, you're absolutely ignorant. C sections aren't the easy way out. They're necessary for women whose birth canals aren't wide enough to accodomodate child birth. Without going through c section, mother and child would die. Vaginal births aren't always "natural" either, if she's opting for an epidural.
Agreed, it is neither commendable nor not commendable. Very few c-sections are elective, and even when they are, it isn't "the easy way out". That assumption always annoys me, even though I had my baby "naturally".
Re: Lucas23 – Luca23, I'm sorry to say, but everything you wrote embodies the common misconception our society at large still has, about our birth canal and that they might not be able to accommodate a big baby. Women all over the world have given birth to 10, 11 and 12 lb babies…naturally. I don't think Perez is ignorant at all. I think he's bang on. Our bodies are made to do it. C-section may be necessary, but only in a VERY small percentage of cases would a woman actually *need* one.
Just how many leopards suffered and were killed to make that afghan?
who cares how they deliver the baby. that spawn was in the womb for 9 months. that's enough. lol
Re: Marg –
Actually, in some cases women cannot deliver naturally. I feel it is a very ignorant statement to say otherwise. Just because women do it everywhere doesn't mean all women can or that it is safe for the baby to do so. That is one thing about having a baby now that bothers me most, it shouldn't matter how the baby comes out as long as everyone is happy and healthy. It is a personal decision that is different for everyone and shouldn't be a competition. One mom isn't better then the other by birthing naturally over a c-section or epidural.
I just feel like people focus too much on how the baby was delivered and not enough on the happiness and joy of a healthy baby and mom.
Re: Marg – Its not a misconception actually. Evolution has allowed us to walk upright, and our skulls are larger than Our acentors'. Walking upright has altered our pelvis, making it narrower, and with our heads being so much larger we have yet to fully accommodate. Some women can give birth vaginally, while others are not. I agree that some c sections performed are unnecessary, but many still are. There are numerous valid reasons why a woman may require a c section.
Re: Ang – True, my sister was in labor for 38 hours (and she had a female Dr.) and her contractions were actually slowing down so they finally did a c-section. Her son was almost 11lbs. I agree it is major surgery.
If a woman needs an epidural during childbirth (both my babies weighed just over ten pounds, so I sure did) what's the big deal? Should you get an award for having a tooth drilled without novacaine? God bless modern medicine. In the olden days, 50 per cent of women died in childbirth. Things are much better now.
About 3 to 5 % need a C section and most are given unnecessarily. Sadly when reading the comments I see some women who think they are informed are not. Fortunately we have modern medicine for those very rare cases but they are Very Rare that need intervention and yes many women think that a C section is the easy way out because of convinience or their doctors scare them into thinking so.
Re: Lucas23 – There are a lot of unnecessary c-sections. I think we've gone from "we can save lives in those rare instances where women can't give birth naturally for whatever reason" to "we'll just use c-sections because they're "easier", less of an insurance liability, and more convenient (they can be scheduled!)" Women have become afraid of what we are actually biologically made to do — in other words, we are relying on the medical technology FIRST instead of our bodies. Research has shown that babies who actually come through the birth canal (fully or partially) have fewer problems with breathing, etc. immediately following birth. And c-sections themselves do not come without risk — we are talking major surgery. Women have died from blood clots because of improper after-surgery care. Our maternal mortality in the US has gone up and is much higher than other "1st world" countries. So before you start calling people ignorant, there are probably some things you should ook into yourself.
And yes, I delivered two babies the all-natural way. I don't judge other women because of the way their babies were born, but I do judge the medical establishment for not allowing women to make more informed decisions about our bodies.
It does matter how a baby is born. When there's no other choice and when it's medically indicated (in reality up to 5% of cases), c-sections are important. All other cases, we need to evolve again to show women how to eliminate fear, therefore loosing everything 'bellow' and allowing the vaginal to swell so that the head passes. There is so much here to get into, but I also see so much ignorance in these comments. Good for you Perez for highlight this very important fact that Kate chose to EDUCATE herself on normal, natural birth. I hear she also read some hypnobirthing books. She is right, wise and I wish more women would do this. The rate of c-section in Brazil is something like 98%, for God sakes! Crazy. It needs to be below 15%. What people don't realize is the risk involved. America ranks number 50 (yes ,50!!!) in the world in maternal mortality and morbidity rates. Sick.
Re: VeronicaSharon – Um no, there was never a time when "50% of women died in childbirth", and FYI epidurals slow down labor and raise the risk of undue fetal stress and unnecessary interventions, such as surgery.
Pain in childbirth is not like pain in a dental procedure; it informs the mother how to position herself so the baby best moves down and out.
It's not terrible to get drugs, but there *are* awards for mothers who forego them — nature gives them out. Do some (actual) research and you'll discover the wealth of benefits in natural birth.
Re: The Matrix – Stop being pretentious. Its not real fur. Stupid hippy.
Re: sunnysarah – Agree so many people get natural and vaginal birth are the same thing! So now I'm confused did she have an epidural or not??
Re: VeronicaSharon – what is the source for 50% of women dying in childbirth?
Do not confuse vaginal delivery with natural delivery. The website referred to here states "vaginal".
