Yesterday we reported on how One Direction was getting into some hot water after it came out that their Best Song Ever might actually be a little too much like Baba O'Riley by The Who.
Apparently, the opening chords to the 1D song goes a little something like those belonging to Baba O'Riley's chord progression. Many believed that The Who wouldn't get fooled again and would sue One Direction.
Finally, in a recent statement, The Who's Pete Townshend broke the silence after an uproar on Twitter gave way to rumors that 1D's lawyers might hear a Who lawsuit coming their way!
Here's what he said when asked if The Who was going to take action against One Direction:
"No! I like the single. I like One Direction. The chords I used and the chords they used are the same three chords we've all been using in basic pop music since Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran and Chuck Berry made it clear that fancy chords don't mean great music – not always."
Wow, One Direction might call that bargain the best they ever had. Looks like there's an understanding between these two English bands!
Pete went on to say this:
"One Direction are in my business, with a million fans, and I'm happy to think they may have been influenced a little bit by The Who. I'm just relieved they're all not wearing boiler suits and Doc Martens, or Union Jack jackets…Why would I not be happy about this kind of tribute?"
Wow, Pete doesn't need to fight to prove that One Direction don't need to be forgiven! Crisis averted! Yeah!
The Who's on first…of being incredibly cool and understanding, and avoiding a truly gruesome battle of the bands!
