Yesterday we reported on how One Direction was getting into some hot water after it came out that their Best Song Ever might actually be a little too much like Baba O'Riley by The Who.

Apparently, the opening chords to the 1D song goes a little something like those belonging to Baba O'Riley's chord progression. Many believed that The Who wouldn't get fooled again and would sue One Direction.

Finally, in a recent statement, The Who's Pete Townshend broke the silence after an uproar on Twitter gave way to rumors that 1D's lawyers might hear a Who lawsuit coming their way!

Here's what he said when asked if The Who was going to take action against One Direction:

"No! I like the single. I like One Direction. The chords I used and the chords they used are the same three chords we've all been using in basic pop music since Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran and Chuck Berry made it clear that fancy chords don't mean great music – not always."

Wow, One Direction might call that bargain the best they ever had. Looks like there's an understanding between these two English bands!

Pete went on to say this:

"One Direction are in my business, with a million fans, and I'm happy to think they may have been influenced a little bit by The Who. I'm just relieved they're all not wearing boiler suits and Doc Martens, or Union Jack jackets…Why would I not be happy about this kind of tribute?"

Wow, Pete doesn't need to fight to prove that One Direction don't need to be forgiven! Crisis averted! Yeah!

The Who's on first…of being incredibly cool and understanding, and avoiding a truly gruesome battle of the bands!

Well it's very nice of Pete. Most rock bands are so far up their own asses thinking they're the shit when really they're not. The quicker people realize that the musical scale has only seven notes on it, the more better off the music industry will be. You can't copyright a cord progression, because cord progressions have been around since music and sound was invented. The only thing you could copyright are the lyrics and composition of your own specific song. If someone steals your lyrics and your melody, then you can sue. But if it's just instruments and no vocal melody of someone else's it's as good as useless. Say for example you have a song that goes dadadadadoodoodoodoo. You're not gonna copyright that are you? Sure it might be part of a melody, but the truth of the matter is that da's and doo's are constatntly in every song, so no you can't copyright it.

Re: Matt – So, what you are saying is that 1D is musically geniuses, and The Who should just shut the fuck up, since they are messing with your beloved cutie boys?

Fuck you! This has happened many times before, and people win the lawsuits.

Remember Ghostbusters theme? and the Hewie Lewis song? HE won that law suit.

Im sure that 1D has never even heard of the Who, and never heard of the song, besides, they dont write their own songs.

Re: Fuckerman – Hey… Matt was saying he respected Pete for what he did! Plus I'm sure One Direction have heard of The Who, because basically everyone in England has. Matt said nothing about 1D being musical geniuses, why so much anger what did they ever do to you?

Well, one direction didn't write the piece of music. They may have contributed to the lyrics at one point or another. But they didn't write and piece of music in their song.

LOL to anybody who thinks it would have been an "ugly battle". You cannot copyright a chord progression and, like Pete said, The Who did not by any means invent that progression.

One Direction didn't steal. Like any other person, they made heir own cover. People do that -
