Wentworth Miller Attempted Suicide Before Coming Out

wentworth miller discusses suicide attempt

Wentworth Miller is a true inspiration.

As you'll recall, the Prison Break actor chose to come out of the closet by declining an invitation to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival due to Russia's treatment and attitude toward the LGBT community.

Saturday night, Miller revealed an even deeper secret at the Human Rights Campaign Dinner. He told the audience seated in Seattle that his first suicide attempt occurred when he was only 15 years old.

Only 15 years old. Awful.

Telling his emotional story, he revealed that he wasn't consuming a bottle of pills to cry for help because:

"…you only cry for help if there is help to cry for."

If that doesn't chill you to the bone, we don't know what will.

He also went on to discuss the torture he felt as a closeted actor in Hollywood, describing the pain he endured as he so badly wanted to a role model for someone else, or as he said it:

"…to be the someone else, that no one was to me."

And you are, Wentworth. You definitely are now thanks to your courageous actions.

Not only did he stand up to an oppressive country, he continues to shed light on his deepest secrets in hopes of helping others understand that we're not alone and that this is how far society's shaming has taken us.

You should be proud, Miller. Extremely proud.

If U or anyone U know is dealing with suicidal thoughts, please don't hesitate to call 1-800-273-8255 for a different perspective. They can help and they want to help. You are loved.

I'm really sad for all the kids in the past that actually HAVE committed suicide because of close minded parents and society!

It's really tough, I was suicidal for 5 years. Wasn't my choice to be gay, I hated who I was and wanted to die.

Perez you were the one OUTING him before he was ready to come out. You are the type of bullies that drive people to this point. Shame on you Perez.

  4. 4

Sad for him and hope he gets the help he needs.
However Perez you are a day late on this story.

So where's the apology, Mario, for actively bullying him around that time? Where's the acknowledgment that you were part of the problem?

Been there before and know exactly what he went through. In my case I only wish I had succeeded. My life is nothing to live for and just wish I could have gone when my friends had the nerve to do it.

When I heard he said "I tried to kill myself", Mariah's We Belong Together lyrics came to my head "Who's gon' talk to me till the Sun comes up?!!!" He's such a hottie!!

I think this guy, like so many others, is using his gay-ness for attention; he has no career now, and he needs to remind the industry he's out there, and what's more trendy these days than being suicidal over something? Yeah, I know that there are those out there who have killed themselves for being gay. Suicide is a thoughtless, selfish thing to do, and I am unmoved by it. If you're so weak and so unable to cope with some adversity, maybe it's best you leave the planet anyhow. Yeah, I went there, and no, I don't care if you disagree.

Re: LovesGossip – Be sad for those left behind, because they're the ones who suffer from needless, consuming guilt. Oftentimes these are the innocent victims of suicides; oftentimes they didn't know and so couldn't try to help.

Re: Yeah Whatever Asshole – His humiliatingly funny-yet-oh-so-apt demise would be an even better legacy.
