Perez Reviews: Kinky Boots - On Broadway!

Kinky Boots is good fun and definitely worth seeing!

UNFORTUNATELY, we were were expecting more and we left the show a bit disappointed.

Our biggest issue was the music. It was neither great nor bad. It felt uninspired - or perhaps a bit too inspired by other songs!

Cyndi Lauper's Tony-winning score felt like a pastiche. You have the song that sounded like Turn The Beat Around. The song that sounded like a Jackson 5 song. That other song that sounded a lot like that other song. And, sadly, none of it felt very original.

A Tony award doesn't always go to the BEST nominee in a category. It is often a popularity contest!

Cyndi's win at this year's Tony Awards felt unmerited. Though we love her!

The same can be said of Kinky star Billy Porter. He was really good in the role of Lola. But he didn't dazzle us with a wholly original and creatively-conceived character. Like Lauper's score, Porter's portrayal felt too familiar. It too was a pastiche. A little Tina here. A lot of RuPaul there. And not enough FRESH.

Very solid. But not Tony-worthy, in our book.

Stark Sands, on the other hand, stole the show for us! He was a revelation! An equally great actor - he cried on stage! - and a phenomenal singer.

Director Jerry Mitchell did the best he could with a fun but surprisingly cookie-cutter book by Harvey Feinstein. The staging was fun and the ensemble was engaging.

We liked Kinky but we wanted a bit more of a heel!

seeing as how critics adored it….and you are about as much a critic as you are a singer, or qualified to critique music…..this "review" means nothing. please, leave the REVIEWS to the professionals and the broadway community. Kinky Boots was beloved in New York by those who matter….you, my dear, are no one that matters.

"great actor - he cried on stage! " THAT´S YOUR WAY TO JUDGE GOOD ACTING?? You think you are a critic…JA JA JA…you are just another loser who likes musical (shocker).

You're not a qualified reviewer so stay out of the ring. All you have is a pedestrian opinion like the rest of us. Stick with what you know, whatever that is.

Why don't you title it "I went to see a play" instead of using the word "review". I agree with the others, this review has zero depth. It was like overhearing a conversation between friends on a subway train.

I think Perez was more impressed with himself by using the word "pastiche" twice, then we were. Who uses a word one has to Google ?

You're a nobody with absolutely NO taste. You are a talentless, pretentious twat, yet you can't even manage to be adequate, let alone match your ridiculous vision of yourself. Your utter lack of depth, coupled with your inability to use the English language correctly, is pitiful at best. Do us all and yourself a favor and stop trying to write your pathetic theater reviews, you worthless queer.

Re: keeyth – A pretentious nobody who needs to feel smarter than everyone else, that's who uses a word like "pastiche." Perez thinks he's above us all, but if that's the case, why do we have to look down into the gutter to see him?

Wow– I LOVED Kinky Boot and thought the music and Billy Porter were awesome!
However you are 100% right on Stark Sands. He was my favorite thing in the show too.

Oh! Darling! Have you noticed the whole Musical Theater genre of Broadway is anything but original! Does not matter if you see Rent, Les Mis, Wicked or The Lion King all the show tunes sound a like, but who cares I really love Broadway! The only thing that could ever be wrong with a Broadway show are bad seats and tardiness like showing up five minutes late to see a good show like Les Mis!

Considering this is the worst comments I've heard about KB I will stick to the opinions of the general public and professionals which are that its a great show! Katy Perry, Gloria Estefan to name a few have raved about the score - so Perez my dear, it seems the song writing community are massive fans of what Cyndi Lauper did here! Your opinions are irrelevant on this and if you are trying to be slightly controversial then that's gonna be as miraculous as u being a decent human being!

I wonder what you might say if Madonna had written the score? You're so obvious. You've really become a bit of a stain shall we say on the LGBT community. By the way, Kinky Boots is outselling Wicked. Moron.

This review is actually pretty spot on. The score is meh, Billy Porter hams it up, is massively over-hyped, and is gifted unearned 11 o'clock numbers to ensure his Tony, and the best parts of the book come directly from the movie. Stark Sands has the difficult job of making a somewhat bland character stand out and shoulders the responsibility of keeping the story moving. Sands and Annaleigh Ashford are the real stars of Kinky Boots imo.

Re: IDontLikeHilton – Erm… Kinky Boots is in no way outselling Wicked. Nothing is outselling Wicked. Kinky Boots IS making more money though, and they're selling a larger percentage of their seating.
