Miley Cyrus' VMAs Dancer Admits She Felt Horribly "Degraded" After Being Treated Like A "Prop"!

| Filed under: Miley CyrusSad SadVMAs

miley cyrus little person degraded during vmas

This probably isn't good for business.

Miley Cyrus has been dancing all around the world with little people to promote her new music, but the uproar against this is about to fuel up.

Hollis Jane was one of the dancers who was in a bear costume for Mileybird's VMAs performance. And while she might not have had a problem with Miley's foam finger antics, she's got a much bigger problem with how she was treated.

She admitted in her blog:

"I will be the first one to tell you that standing on that stage, in that costume was one of the most degrading things I felt like I could ever do. I realize not everyone shares my opinion and I might just be young and naive, but I feel like the acceptance of this kind of treatment has got to stop … I had never been in a performance where I was purely meant to be gawked or laughed at. I will never forget that performance because it is what forced me to draw my personal line in the sand. After our first dress rehearsal in the costumes with the crew, publicists, performers etc watching us, I walked out of the Barclay Center shaking and crying. I was being stared and laughed at for all of the wrong reasons. I was being looked at as a prop…as something less than human."

Yikes! We hate that someone had to go through such a horrible moment!

We doubt Mileybird meant any harm including little people in her performance, but maybe this will give her another perspective.

Perhaps she should just stick to wagging her tongue and twerking her booty for now??

While I certainly understand how degraded this performer felt, is it rather silly she didn't take a stand before collecting the paycheck. As a performer, you always have to know where the line is drawn before you take the job. Yes, shame on Cyrus for having people do such a performance. But people will exploit you unless you say no first. She had a choice.

why did i click on this.

  3. 3

Re: BertieLover – Sadly it might not have been that simple, not knowing anything else about her situation. Its hard to walk away from a paying gig if you really need the money, no matter how degraded you feel.

  4. 4

I highly doubt Miley doesn't mean to make them feel that way. She has to know what kind of message she's sending by using them the way she does…and its not just one performance, she keeps doing it. She's just a crap person.

  5. 5

Oh Boo Hoo! If she felt degraded she shouldn't have done the performance. I am sure she wasn't shaking and crying when she got her paycheck. Give me a break!

  6. 6

Get over it you are just starting, you are a back up dancer that means you are in the back ground. If you had not put this post put there no one would even know you were in it. You got paid right just do your job, now everyone will know you were in this big deal at the VMA's and I am sure that is what you wanted all along.

  7. jill says – reply to this

OH PLEASE. People will do anything for their 15 minutes of fame. Then why did she agree in the first place?

  8. 8

Hopefully, Miley is going to vanish from the music scene in the next year or so we won't have to deal with her weirdness anymore. This VMA dancer shouldn't feel too bad about feeling degraded. Miley degraded herself FAR more than any pop star I can think of in music history. Why Miley still has a bunch of fans I have no idea. Maybe Miley will be one of those "has been" singers by this time next year. She might could join a side show circus or do trashy "porn pop" singing in dive bars in Vegas or something.

She feels so degraded now, that she's trying to capitalize on her misfortune. Give me a break…she whored herself out and got paid. Now she's trying to blame others. The time to complain was before she degraded herself. She needs to look inward to see what weakness within herself allowed her to climb into the bear suit and be used.

I predict this complainer will have an very difficult time finding work in the future.

  10. 10

UMMM then why did she agree to it??? Sorry no one forced her to take the job. this story is completely pointless.

  11. Cheds says – reply to this

At first I didn't understand why she did the performance but after reading her blog and reading an AMA she did on Reddit, I see her point of view. She did the performance but realized after it was over how degrading it actually was. In fact, she turned down an offer to go on tour with Miley afterwards. She said that it did pay well but it wasn't worth doing ever again. Give her a break.

Re: BertieLover – She would have signed a contract prior to being involved in it. Once the contract is signed, it's very hard to get out of, unless you can fork over a whole lot a money. It's not something she could simply decide not to do or walk away from. I seriously doubt she knew what she was in for, when she signed the contract. In many instances like this, you don't know what exactly you will be doing, until you get there and the contract is already signed.

  13. adermondomlom says – reply to this

at least you were cute with the costume on.

  14. Alex says – reply to this

it was her own choice to perform, no one was forcing her… if she didn't like how she was being treated or portrayed on stage, she didn't have to participate. simple as that. i can't help but think that hollis is only making this statement for attention, and maybe to make an extra buck off of her "degrading" story.

  15. TopGun says – reply to this

Re: ickynicky – they didn't have to sign a contract for that job, I had clients on that job, they knew exactly what they were getting into…. its work. This person just wants their 15 minutes, pointless story…..

  16. 16

Miley could care less she is on top of the world. it will take years for her to figure out she made a fool of herself and should be embarrassed. she made money and shes popular with teenagers to shes happy.

  17. 17

I don't buy it. She knew what she was doing and she went through with it. Not to mention I've seen Miley have little people on stage in nothing but a respectful way. Such as the guitarist during her SNL performance. This chick was given a job, she took it and she got paid well. NOW she wants to complain about it?

  18. Wheresmyleftshoeman says – reply to this

will the prudes please stop exaggerating the "shocking nature" of miley's dance? I watched the dance over and over and frankly.. apart from being sexy and delivering a great song in a very charismatic way, IT WASNT REALLY ALL THAT BIG A DEAL. If i had seen the dance prior to the "uproar", I wouldnt even have NOTICED that she had done anything "shocking". It just looked like a chick dancing like every chick dances in clubs. How long has it been since you've been to a club? 40 years? Alot has changed since then and there is no time capsule backwards. Her dance would not shock ANYBODY who hangs in clubs (unless those clubs are in the middle east). I've seen a drunk piece of shiit guy pull a knife in a club on someone (in japan of all places. one of the least violent people on earth). THATS shocking.

  19. fairmaiden says – reply to this

Now if only Miley and her mother would wake up and understand how she is degrading herself.

  20. lexi says – reply to this

so sad how people are willing to use others' names just to make money… if she felt degraded like she says she did, she shouldn't have done it… for those who say if it was good money maybe she didn't have a choice… being an escort is one of the most paying jobs for a woman and yet THAT is degrading I would never do anything that I feel degrading for the sake of money.

  21. wheresmyleftshoeman says – reply to this

"Degrade degrade degrade". I'm tired of females using that word. Its so stupid. So, millions of women go to strip clubs every year to watch musclebound men dressed only in bow ties prance around dragging their dicks across the stage… and then see miley's dance and go "waaaaaa she degraded herself". ???!!! PPPUUUUU[fucken]LEEEAAASEEE. Here's what i think of this dancer: THE WORD IS MIDGET not "little people". The expression "little people" is offensive to the poor.

  22. AmyOSays says – reply to this

as a dancer myself, she would have gone to plenty of rehearsals & known what she was signing up for. way to make a statement just to receive some attention. you would have been well aware of what was taking place & if you were unhappy you shouldn't have participated. no sympathy.

  23. 23

I'm sure she knew she was being used as a prop and getting paid for it! She should have stepped away before the performance and said no thanks! A little late for boo hoos after the check is cashed!!

  24. sarah says – reply to this

Look at this little fame whore ! She's trying to use the fact that she has a disability to her advantage, in MANY other performances that have occurred in the past ""normal"" sized people have been dressed in funny costumes, meant only as a "prop" for the performance… because thats what their purpose for THE PERFORMANCE is. What did this bitch expect? to be sharing the spotlight with Miley? there were so many of those bears up there and this girl seems to think she was being targeted and degraded…. pathetic! Want to really feel degraded? go work at McDonalds and wait on people all day.

  25. The Matrix says – reply to this

Looking at her picture I can see why they covered her up.

  26. gardenconcepts@ec.rr.c says – reply to this

    Get over yersellfff.

  27. rachy says – reply to this

If she truly felt this strongly about it BEFORE the performance, then back the heck out of the performance. Don't get paid a crap load then cry about it after for your 15 minutes of fame. Seriously.

  28. 28

    Re: TopGun
Sooo…@TopGun. You want us to believe you're a talent manager? What agency do you work for?

  29. @v@ says – reply to this

Re: The Matrix – Ever gotten caught in a degrading work situation, and it doesn't feel right to you, but you do it because you're trying to be professional and you have rent to pay; but then you manage to figure out later what was bothering you? Read the dancer's AMA on Reddit. If she were capitalizing, she'd have gone on tour. Everyone figures things out as they go along, and sometimes after it went down, and usually when you're trying to get to sleep, lol. There are inequities in this world, and it's up to each individual where their line is. Sometimes they don't know where it is until something happens.

  30. bri says – reply to this

Now this is searching for 15 minutes of fame. You were in a costume, no one knew which one was you. stop trying to have a pity party. You knew what you were signing up for.

Miley has eluded to the fact that she wanted black people in her music video and performances because she wanted an "urban black feel" to her music. Sounds like she wanted to use them as props. Her performances are all degrading to women everywhere.

  33. kay says – reply to this

i was at the vma's and witnessed them practicing before the show. NO ONE was laughing. and during the actual performance, no one was even paying attention to the bears — all eyes were on miley. so this is just the stupidest thing i've ever heard. if you really felt degraded, you wouldn't have agreed to do the performance. you were hired and paid, not forced.

  34. The Matrix says – reply to this

If this person hates costumes that make people seem like props…..she must be highly offended by Disney Land… Mickey Mouse ..the seven dwarfs. For gods sake she was playing a role depicting a a bear…Miley was also playing a role…Miley was also a prop….Miley also degraded herself for money…. Should it be illegal for people to wear costumes??? This biotch cashed the check and now Boo Hoo..Boo hoo… poor me.

  35. kelly says – reply to this

This is ridiculous, no one could even see her as she was in a bear costume and i really doubt that anyone was laughing at her because they were too busy staring at Mley's raunchy performance. The performance as a whole was meant to be a fun party scene, whats degrading about that? And its not MIley's fault if anyone did make fun of the little people in the performance, the blame should be solely on the people making fun of those with a disability.

  38. Marco says – reply to this

she felt degraded ? how can she be ? people at work suffer from bullying, abused, talked about etc…well she should be grateful and proud she got a job…You fool…she was not even have to show off her body or sell it…how many people wear mascot, or be a clown to earn money…she just want to create controversy to make money or to be famous…who is gonna hire her now ? that should be the stepping stone for her to get into showbiz…

  39. whatttt? says – reply to this

I guess i didnt see the part of the performance where Miley held a gun to her and made her be in the show. Or maybe it was a threat made during the several rehearsals. or when she agreed to take the job. that damn miley!

  40. Kevin says – reply to this

    Grow up! that's showbiz

  41. 41

Oh please. She KNEW what the job description was. She knew exactly what was required of her and she decided to accept it for a paycheck. Sorry, you can't sit there and knowingly and willingly exploit yourself or allow yourself to be "degraded" for a paycheck and their turn around and be outraged over it.

  42. Magicpie says – reply to this

Sounds like someone just wants attention. If she didn't like how she felt during the practice runs then why did she go onstage? Oh yeah, because of the paycheque! I doubt she was forced to do anything. She chose to be in the performance so she needs to suck it up. I wouldn't do anything that makes me feel degraded.

  43. Magicpie says – reply to this

Re: AmyOSays – Exactly!!! why is it ok for things like Magic Mike to exist but Miley wiggles her ass and it's shocking?! Oh pls.

  44. Whoa says – reply to this

A Pug can dance? That is the real story here.

  45. Sick of Miley says – reply to this

The majority of Miley fans are sickening. They write with such immaturity and defend her no matter what. They seem to have no feelings for others with the way they are going after this woman. She took a job and realized that it was degrading period. It was clear from that first performance in Germany when Miley USED the little people as props that she did not care if she USED others to get attention for herself. Miley will do anything to make sure that she is getting her ego fed.

  46. Mandi says – reply to this

Wow, will this girl never work in the industry again. No one will want to book someone who degrades their performer. Miley Cyrus brings in millions, you bring in ????

  47. -CHris. says – reply to this

Almost all performance "art" done by little people are pretty much for the purpose of staring and laughing at them. I don't support it, but that's facts. But, as far as this is concerned ALL of Miley's dancers are used as props.

  48. Wow says – reply to this

At least she wasn't the one whose butt was touched by Molly Pervertus.

  49. @v@ says – reply to this

It was a gig. You either take it or leave it, and she eventually left it. They get paid.

  50. 50

It was super degrading, but she shouldn't have done it, she went to the rehearsals, and she should have had a word with whoever was in charge and put her foot down and said she wasn't going to do it. No one can make you do anything, so I don't understand why she's 'speaking out' right now, plus it was a while ago now? Couldn't she have said something when all the stuff about the VMAs was blowing up?

  51. 51

It was her choice to stay as a cast member… If she didn't want to be in that sitch she should have just stepped out… JS

  52. 52

why the fuck did she decide to do it then?

  56. KingRamsesParrot says – reply to this

Unfortunately, this type of work is the majority of what is available for little people in show business.

  57. KingRamsesParrot says – reply to this

It is super easy for all of you commenters to say it is her fault and why'd she do it, but if only all of you heartless, inconsiderate jerks could live her life. There are not a lot of little people roles out there, but the bills still need to be paid. In fact, even outside of show business, it is immensely difficult for little people to find work, despite the ADA being in place for the past 23 years. Sometimes you just need to pay the bills. This was probably her most high-profile gig to date. Thus, the inordinate feelings of degradation. But you all are probably right, screw her (note the obvious sarcasm). I feel I need to make the sarcasm explicit, as this group of commenters does not appear intelligible.

she felt like a prop because she's chose to become one what did she think a back up dancer was?!

  59. charlotte says – reply to this

she should get a real job then, she wasn't forced to be a stripper or a prostitute she CHOSE to become a back up dancer, I'm sure there's a table somewhere that needs to waited on.

Re: Debsays – why are you complaining now? after you take that paycheck. you silly little girl should have thought of that before collecting your big fat paycheck
