Julianne Hough Opts For Controversial Blackface Costume For Halloween Outing!

| Filed under: Party Poppin'HalloweenJulianne Hough

julianne hough blackface for halloween

Ruh roh!

Did someone miss the memo about blackface being pretty inappropriate??

It seems Julianne Hough hasn't checked her mail lately because she decided that blackface was the way to go for her Halloween costume this year.

Dressed as Crazy Eyes from Orange Is The New Black, Julianne had on her jail getup, knotted 'do, and some paint on her face to change her skin color!

Her friends were dressed as various characters from the show, but Julianne's styling was most def the most shocking. Even though she might've felt is was just fine for the Halloween party at Casamigos Tequila in Hollywood this weekend, we're not so sure she should've gone down the blackface road.

Better safe than sorry. Leave the paint at home next time!

    Um… that's not blackface.

Putting dark foundation on your face to make your skin appear darker to portray someone of a darker color is not in itself offensive. Blackface is offensive. Look it up. It is a distinct style of its own, and it is racist and offensive. Black AND white stage makeup are used and the look was once considered "comical". The internet is your friend. Use it.

This is bullshit. Just because she is dressed up as a character from a show, doesn't mean she is being racist. Stop luring in the drama.

  3. 3

you are such a idiot perez.

  4. 4

Did you not get the memo, you ridiculous queer, that most of us are fed up with the blacks being hysterical over every little thing? As long as so many of them are entitlement leeches, they can shut the fuck up. Too many of them are shitting out welfare kids, and those kids end up in gangs committing crimes. But the truth is I'd rather have blacks around than stupid, ape-faced, dirty queers like you.

    5

BUT gay Eddie Murphy can dress as an old white man for laughs and that's okay?

  6. 6

The fact that she and her friends ALL dressed up as characters from the same tv show and you're only mad at the black character makes you the racist, Perez.

  7. 7

Historically, this was an extremely controversial thing to do. But Julianne seems to be a dumb bunny from Utah, so no big surprise here!! LOL

    8

I see nothing wrong what so ever,
What about black girls who paint their faces white, don blonde wigs, and blue contacts
    Would that be racist

  9. thebigboot says – reply to this

    9

So this is controversial but the movie "White Chicks" is fine?

  10. 10

I just get the impression she will do ANYTHING for attention.

Re: The Truthinator – Really? "you ridiculous queer" and "the blacks"? And I bet you're not racist or homophobic, right?

  12. 12

Re: mr pete – White people were not an "oppressed" group, and therefore any negative names for white people had no power. But negative names for oppressed minorities had huge power. And "black face" was always considered a huge slap to African Americans, guess she didn't learn that in Utah!!

  13. 13

That is NOT blackface, so everyone needs to lighten up and get over it….people are just looking for an excuse to call someone a racist, and that shit gets really old.

Re: Rocky – She is! She is so insecure with herself that she has to bash " the blacks" She is an idiot. Don't mind that bitch.

    15

She's an a-hole for doing the blackface thing.

Why do blonde haired blue eyed white people have the need to do racist things like that?

I'm half white half asian and my blonde haired daddy has done racist stuff like that.

  16. 16

Not funny. Not cool Julianne. Hopefully somebody talked her into this and it wasn't her idea. I bet her agent would have liked to know she was going to do this.

Maybe she didn't hear that American Indians take offense to the name of the Washington REDskins and they want the owner to change the name? There's some things white people can joke around about but going out on Halloween in blackface isn't one of them. In Old Hollywood in the Vaudeville days, the black people thought that was very offensive when white actors did that and cracked jokes about uneducated, poor black people.

    17

Re: someguy2621 – Have you seen the movie White Chicks? After that I'd think it'd be fair game.

  18. 18

Re: someguy2621 – Yeah, you're right, people should just stick to their own races and we should maintain these racial walls that separate us from understanding each other.

She and her friends went as characters from their new favorite show for Halloween. Would it have been better for them to exclude the black characters and just go as white characters? How is this a better solution?

Most of all, why is it so easy for our society to throw around such powerful words like 'racist' for something as stupid as a Halloween costume? Being a racist is a deeply serious accusation and our society throws it around like it means nothing. What about the real racism out there? Do you think people who are oppressed by real racism appreciate you calling someone out on their Halloween costume?

Isn't it funny that Julianne gets taken to task for what some are saying is blackface but TYRA BANKS goes WHITEFACE and no one mentions it. One is as good or as bad as the other.

  20. Kippyisanidiot says – reply to this

    20

Re: Kippy – It was offensive many years ago. Google isn't your "friend" when it comes to things like these - common sense is. No one is being racist here but yourself. Many black people have big lips and very dark skin, how is putting make up to reflect that being racist? It's the truth. Plus, by being offended by it people are just saying it isn't a pleasant look, which is based on opinions.

  21. 21

  22. 22

She is not being racist, she and her friends are dressing as characters from this show.
Also I guess some of you folks did not get the memo that this PC garbage went out of fashion with regular Americans 2-3 years ago. We leave that stuff to the Hollywood PC liberal crowd.

    23

WOW! I am really surprised at the comments…ATTENTION PEOPLE she IS IN BLACKFACE. And BLACKFACE IS RACIST AND EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE. As a black woman, it is SO ANNOYING when people (usually white people) don't care. She could have wore the outfit without darkening her skin…its always something with these celebrities…they think that they are above everything. What hurts is that people don't get!

My friends dressed up as Kanye West and Taylor Swift a few years ago after the MTV "imma let you finish but" and she painted her face because otherwise nobody would know what in the world she was trying to portray. I've put super light foundation on my face to look super super pasty, I have friends that have overdone the spray tan to dress like Lindsay Lohan, I've had friends dress up as smurfs. It is a holiday for people to dress up however they want for one night and it is very popular to portray characters of shows/movies/etc. Chill out everyone, it isn't racist it is wanting people to recognize the character you are trying to portray.

Malibu@12 - White people weren't oppressed?!? That belief is utter bullshit spin. Why did boatloads emmigrate to North America from the UK and all over Europe? Feudalism. Class oppression. Stinking Poverty. Debtor's prisons. Injustice. Taxes, taxes and more taxes from rich Lords who took almost everything the people who lived on their 'land' produced. Whites always were and still are oppressed, and things are getting worse. The top 1% have more money than 40 percent of the rest of the population. The top 5% have more than the other 90%. The whites are suffering big time, because they don't like to go on welfare or food stamps unless it's a last resort.

I agree with Khris–minstrelsy is extremely racist. But this chick's costume is so bad that I thought she was dressed as Miley Cyrus' and tan mom's convict baby. Anyway, black face (orange face?) is disgusting.

Re: Zaina – First of all, she's not bashing anybody, and as a black woman I find it very offensive that people throw race around so much it's nauseating. If Julianne is cut, red blood will come out, and If I as a black woman is cut, the same red blood will flow out. Calling someone racist just because she put a brown, black or whatever you want to call it MAKE-UP on for halloween is reaching

  34. 34

What she was portraying wasn't a true "blackface." The hysteria is perpetuated by folks who are constantly looking for something to be offended by. I understand why she apologized, but I think it's a shame she felt she needed to. People are ridiculous.

Re: Rocky – the truthinator is obviously a hateful/mentally ill closet

  37. jon says – reply to this

    37

You all who think she is being racist are ridiculous. It's a costume and she's portraying a character in the show. If she didn't have this costume on and her friends went as the rest of the cast, people would yell "racist" because the black character wasn't included. Include the character, and she's still being called "racist."

I hate it when the ignorant black people in this country pull the race card with everything. If someone is being racist toward black people, and you stand up for yourself then great. That is amazing. That is good in this country. But when all the ignorant black people shout it out every other word, then those who remember their past, and their struggles lose merit because of the rest of the assholes in the community tainting a history they most likely do not even understand.

And yes. I am black. I don't like how I have to even write this, but the ignorant black people out there will assume I am white.

  38. 38

Re: Khris – Can you elaborate on this? I want to understand your point. I think telling people what they can and can't do based on the color of their skin is wrong. I think it divides us. I have many black friends who are so tired of people walking around on egg shells around them so as not to unintentionally offend them and they see it as a negative thing when other black people (and white people) call someone a racist for things like this. I'm interested to know your perspective since my black friends seem to disagree with you. Why are you so offended by a group of friends dressing as a few of their favorite characters from a television show?
Though it's not the same thing by any means, as a gay male I have had some experience when it comes to subjects like this. I can't stand it when people talk to me like anything they say could offend me, because I so desperately want people to treat me as an equal and not like some fragile trap that could go off at the sound of anything that's not the weather. If I saw a group of straight males going as a group of gay guys for Halloween I would love it. They would be treating me like any other persona that's fair game on Halloween, so I would like to understand your point better.

Seriously??!! I'm so over everyone screaming "racist" about everything. Slavery was horrible & my heart breaks for those who were slaves….BUT, slavery was abolished in 1865. There isn't a person alive who was a slave or owned a slave. It's time to stop playing the race card. White males are the new minority so what's going to happen when they start demanding equal rights? What's that? Nothing you say…EXACTLY!

    Re: Kippyisanidiot
I don't know why you called me an idiot when you are agreeing with me that it is not racist. Apparently, reading comprehension is not your strongpoint. Sheis not in "Blackface". Again, look up Blackface. She is not in blackface. I don't know how to put it any simpler. If your lack of reading skills causes you to go off the rails like that, then maybe you should consider tutoring.

  46. 46

Re: natalie – This is not offensive at all, she is playing a character on TV not taking a roll from one by going "blackface". Nikki Minaj wears blonde wigs blue contacts and 3shades lighter than her natural skin tone foundation!!! Wait thats ok right? DOUBLE STANDARDS. . . Get over it people

  47. 47

Doesn't Julianne have a few black girl friends? She should have gotten one of them to dress up like "Crazy Eyes" from that TV show. There's an unwritten rule in show business that it's (kind of) okay to dress up like a black person, joke about a particular black person or certain things black people do … but you have to BE a black person doing it. Not a white guy or a white woman. Black comedians like Chris Rock can get away with it, not young white actresses. If Julianne mentioned her Halloween costume to her agent, I bet he'd tell her that dressing up as "Crazy Eyes" was just too crazy and controversial.

    48

How ridiculous. This is not blackface whatsoever. Is that what Perez Hilton, Sharpton and Jackson are claiming? LOL

  49. 49

I think everyone calling her racist really needs to think about how they use that word. Not that I think this costume is exactly appropriate but there's a HUGE different between something being racist and something being in bad taste. I honestly doubt she meant anything by this costume besides having fun with friends…yeah she should have thought it through more but…racism really needs to stop being thrown around. This is bad taste.

She probably did not mean to be racist but the costume is racist. This is blackface. The paint of blackface does not need to be very dark. Miley Cyrus dressed up as Nicki Minaj last year and did not paint her face. She could have just as easy dressed up as Crazy Eyes without painting herself. Honestly she must be doing this on purpose because she knew that this was going to bring attention, which it did.

By all means dress in what you want but if there is a shadow of a doubt your costume will offend someone, especially if it involves something as alive as racism, you should think twice. I cannot say i'm outraged and ready to write a angry letter about her stupidity. As a black woman, I would also agree that this is not blackface. There was nothing derogatory meant, I'm sure. An homage to a well-liked character. Blackface would have been offensive. She simply darkened her skin and hair to look like an African American actress.

  71. 71

There is no disputing that blackface was and is an embodiment of racism. Hard to believe but well into the mid 20th century blackface was a popular form of entertainment. It was not uncommon well into the 1950s for high school, fraternities and local theatre groups would perform in blackface. The real Mad men of Madison Ave. had no compunction utilizing blackface in their advertising. Take a look
