Oopsies! That's clearly what Julianne Hough is thinking right now as she got some serious backlash for her Halloween costume that included totally awkwar… Read more…
People react to anything these days. Can't do anything without some idiot feeling hurt.
It's not like there weren't other white characters she could have been. What about Morello with a wig and red lipstick? At least she didn't try to be Taystee or Sophia…
Some people fail to realize that being African-American is not a custom, no more than being of English descent, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican or anything else. Being a race is part of being human, not part of a dress up custom.
So when are the Wayans brothers going to apologize for White Chicks?
Get off your high horses people. Geeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
CRAZY EYES IS A GREAT CHARACTER AND WANTING TO DRESS UP AS HER WOULDN'T BE CONSIDERED OFFENSIVE HAD HOUGH HAD LESS WHITE ABOUT HER … REALLY CAN'T BE ARSED WITH PEOPLE WHO ALWAYS MAKE IT A RACE ISSUE .. GET A LIFE FFS!!!
Re: thebigboot – Re: AlwaysOnTimeB – People like you take the fun out of Halloween. Why worry? Why look for reasons? It's just a fun holiday.
Re: thebigboot – We're all gonna get together and we're all gonna go..SHOPPING!
It's halloween, whats the big friggin deal? People read too far into things now a days.
Re: thebigboot – I was just going to mention the white chicks movie. I just don't understand this. She loves the character and dressed up like her and as I can see went in a group of other characters from the show. Not every white person is a bigot and racist.
It's more offensive that she dressed up as a character portrayed by someone who can act.
I really don't see the big deal. Who cares if she put costume makeup on to look like a character from a show. I don't understand why people are so damn sensitive these days. Get over it
The Wayans made a whole movie dressed up as white chicks in the name of comedy. Geeze Pleeze. Julienne looked more like an Umpa Loompa than anything else. Need she apologize to the writer of Willie Wonka? I dressed up as a green witch one year. Should I apologize to the dark side?
This is silly, there isn't really anything racist about this. Like people have said-white chicks is a prime example of how hypocritical this type of political correctness is.
Re: bunnycake – Your comment is truly disturbing. Since when is dark skin a "costume?" And pertaining to the Wayans' "White Chicks" movie, one might be able to mark that up as "turnabout is fair play." You can't compare one movie to blackface minstrelsy dating back to the 1800s!!! Read a book, please. Blackface has been part of American culture for CENTURIES. One movie compared to hundreds of images in cinema and print? Are folks out here really that dim?
Re: Afronerd – Riiight. So everyone can preach racial tolerance but black people are still allowed to make fun of white people to somehow make up for our black forefathers' oppression by our white forefathers, none of which anyone alive today had any part in. But hey, you keep picking the scab…I'm sure that's the true way to racial harmony.
She shouldn't have had to apologize in the first place. Also, it's costume, not custom, one is a thing you put on and another is behaving in a ceremonial or meaningful manner. In both cases this is Halloween, it is a custom to put on costumes. Is everyone going to lose their minds every time a black person puts on an Asian costume or pancake to look white? No, because that's called being a hypocrite. Oh they put on black face enough times that we get the right to dress up as white people now. Get that wedgie out of your asses people, it's making sitting atop of your moral high horse that much more uncomfortable. Plus Julianne wasn't in "black face" she was wearing a ton of bronzer. A true black face is entirely different, so before anyone starts screaming "that's wasit" get your shit straight and then go outside and away from any access to social media. That's how you make the world a better place. Enjoy the god damned holiday.
i wouldnt apologize if u r white and wanna dress up as a black person u gotta paint your skin that just makes sense sooo i dont get it fuckin ppl so obsessed with apologize
OMG sensitive much.. it's a fucking costume, a character from her favorite show who happens to be black. kinda hard to pull off if she doesn't paint her face.. people need to get a grip..
God it's a fucking costume. at least she wasnt dressed like a slut.
really offended…I am so fucking tired of everyone and their feelings. Fuck Perez he never thinks before opening his big mouth. We get the once a year apology with promises of never doing it again. So just because I am white I can't dress up as Crazy Eyes…the best character in the entire show….love it.
It's a halloween costume! She shouldn't have to apologize.
Are people serious with this shit?? Its Halloween. Get over it.
If there was no bad intention in her heart, how is it racist?
It's makeup, not a political tactic. She was just honoring her love for that character. I mean if a little foundation can cause an upheaval, shouldn't we all be boycotting anyone who tans? Anyone who alters their skin tone in any way should be held accountable for their actions as well, if she's to be accused of "blackface".
GET REAL, AND GET OVER IT.
she's portraying an actress and a character that she is a fan of, she wasn't trying to be racist. The fact she had to apologize for portraying a character who is black and making her skin look darker to be that character for HALLOWEEN, is absolutely rediculous. It's not racist. I'd be flattered if I was the actress because Julianne was such a huge fan to go through the trouble of making herself look like her.
Remember Robert Downey Jr in Tropic Thunder? I don't remember people flipping out as much about his character as much as you're freaking out about Julianne's costume!
Does anyone else remember Robert Downey Jr's character from Tropic Thunder? Was he also not nominated for an oscar? I don't remember Robert being criticized as harshly as Julianne for her Halloween costume. She shouldn't have to apologize!
Its a costume. Im so over everyone being offended. SO OLD!
She didn't need to apologize. There was no evil intent. How ridiculous that people have to walk on eggshells these days for fear of insulting someone's ethnicity. This is just nonsense. She slaps on some bronzer in admiration of Crazy Eyes on Orange is the New Black and she's being accused of putting blackface on (which looks nothing like this).
Re: Tropic Thunder – Oh gosh, I remember that, he was hilarious in that movie, really made it.
And I agree, she should not have felt the need to apologize to a few uptight people, she was only dressing up and honoring someone she admires.
Re: Afronerd – You're right and unfortunately the commenters here are really dumb and don't understand the history of blackface and why it's wrong. White Chicks does not compare since white people still hold the power in this world. People are dumb.
And no doubt everyone that is saying it's no big deal is white. It's the history behind "black face", educate yourselves on it's original intention. And no worry white people, it's still quite acceptable apparently to do "redskin" and do demeaning little skits on ESPN on native americans. And perez is quite ok with demeaning natives (he provided the link to the skit) which is weird considering he thinks "black face" is offensive. One of the faces of racism is proclaiming no racism at all.
People are overly sensitive. Nothing at all wrong with her costume. She's not making fun or demeaning anyone. She wanted to be a character on a show she likes. Get over it!
This isn't racist. People are dumb. She was just playing a significant character of the show that stands out without being rude or disrespectful. Cheers.
I don't understand why people get offended over this, your not allowed to try and look like another race? so what, she made her skin look darker big fricken deal.
Re: catypantsiful – This isn't "blackface" it's more of a brownface as anything else. She is in character. There are way more worse offensive costumes as this.
Re: thebigboot – Your 100% Right! When black people make fun of white people, its funny but when white people mention anything about black people or dress up like a black person, its offensive, and they have to apoligize. So many people dress up as snooki, miley cyrus, lady gaga, and nothing hapens
Re: AlwaysOnTimeB – To choose only to be a white character would be racist. You can't have it both ways!
Black people want to be treated like white people but keep getting offended over stupid shit like this…
Not to mention people lighten their skin all the time but someone puts a bit of face paint on and people freak out. Fucking double standards.
Give me a Break….there was no need to apologize for dressing like a character. She is not a racist.
For real, most the people complaining on here just want to hop on the racism train instead of actually trying to understand what's going on. God forbid anyone try to be fucking reasonable and open minded. Have any of you googled Orange is the New Black? Are people aloud to dress up as any black characters for Halloween if they aren't black? Does intention matter at all or is anything that could possibly be construed racist always racist. If you're looking for it you'll find it, maybe we could all try to be a little more understanding instead of always trying to pick fights over nonsense. Seriously I want to know from somebody who is complaining about black face and calling everyone ignorant for not knowing as much as they do about it when they clearly don't know that this isn't black face, what is an appropriate way for a white person to dress as a black character that they like? Just don't? Walk on egg shells because we should worry that someone might think we're racist when that's the farthest from our minds? You keep it alive by making us doubt every little decision like this.
This is not BLACKFACE people! If you look back on history when people did use BLACKFACE as a racist spoof it looks nothing like this. It's come to this when you can't do anything without offending the black race. It's reverse discrimination. Blacks can call each other the "N" word all they want, but anyone who isn't black and says the word gets labeled a racist and can lose their job. It's so ridiculous that a white person can't even spell the 'N' word out for fear of being labeled a racist, instead non-blacks have to put quotation marks around the letter N when referencing the word. Wayan brothers and eddie murphy can dress up as white people and spoof how they act without a single slap on the hand about it being racist. Blacks can call whites 'crackers' all the time and not lose their jobs for having said it and get labeled a racist. Enough is enough. You don't like the 'N' word then step up and stop using it in your everyday conversations, stop using it in rap songs and stop propagating it in the community. What this girl did in dressing like a character isn't in the least bit racist, but I'm sure she will lose plenty of job opportunities because of it.
Re: mangymutt – I agree!!!!
I think it's time Ms. Hough grow up. Seriously she could not have put that on and not think that there would be a reaction. She is SUPPOSED to be intelligent. Honestly, the costume was an epic fail all a way around
WHAT A COMPLETE IGNORANT SELF-ABSORBED IDIOT. #DUH
So it's ok that Cindy Crawford dressed as Amy Winehouse on Halloween about 4 or 5 yrs ago? Double standards based on who your are. Ms. Hough would never intentionally diss anyone. She is too much of a lady. Cindy Crawford on the other hand……enough said..
Its was a costume. So if a black person wanted to be the character she was that would have been ok because they are black?? So when the Wayne brothers made the movie white chicks that was ok?? I mean they were basically making fun of white girls and how they think they act. Get over it people its Halloween its not like she did this just because she wanted to be a bitch.
The comments here are crazy, she could have been that character without the blackface and STILLLL be identified as Crazy Eyes. A caucasian was someone from Coming to America and could be identified and did NOT use black face to get his point across. It's possible.
She was not dressing up as a race, she was dressing as a TV character, who to her credit steals the show. As a Black woman, and one who understands the history of Black face, I totally think this thing is way overblown. Black face was designed to demean Blacks with exaggerated features, dialect and expression; whereas, Julia was simply trying to become a character - similar to Hugh Heffner and his new wife dressing up like Miley and Robin Thicke. We have to learn to not take everything so personally.
is this a joke??? pretending someones life in the past has anything to do with yours now is simply ignorant name one single live person in this country that has ever in their lifetime has even met or known a black slave? NO ONE?? then STFU
shes bffs with selena gomez. both love to indulge in a bit of cultural appropriation. birds of a feather.
I think Crazy eyes is one of the most interesting charactors on the show and a great actress
If she were wearing a mask of the character, "Crazy Eyes", instead of using make-up to appear darker this wouldn't have been news.
she has no reason to apologize, she didn't do anything wrong…It's Halloween, dressing up as a character you love is all part of it….besides nobody got this butt hurt when Shawn & Marlon Wayans covered there face in WHITE and made fun of white chicks, they got an entire movie so people need to calm the eff down, she atleast wasn't making fun of anyone.
I wonder if some of the actions older folks consider racist are considered the same by younger folks.
I have blue eyes and straight blonde hair and when I was a little girl in the 70s I thought afros were so cool, I wished I could have one.
Flash forward to today, I had a martini costume and I thought it was a little boring the way it was so I darkened my skin with makeup (not cork soot, and I did not paint my lips clown white) and wore a big beautiful afro wig and pretty makeup and I went out as a "Chocolate Martini." None of my black friends recognized me and when they realized it was me they all had good comments. "I thought you were one of us!" "That is so cool!" "You look great!" They took it as a compliment to their culture, I wasn't acting ignorant or stupid or speaking in ebonics. I wan't making fun of black women. I was acting like a sexy proud smart intelligent funny black woman. Didn't Charles Caleb Colton say imitation the sincerest form of flattery?
I don't think the old insulting blackface routines ever crossed my black friends minds. I think constantly bringing up that old stuff just reopens wounds that are almost healed in our culture. I don't think this hypersensitivity helps race relations at all.
Re: Afronerd – Blackface was not around for centuries, 100 years at the most, the last of it in the 1960s. Folks born after the 1960s have never even heard of it, and if you hypersensitive people would stop bringing it up it would just die. Blackface was a way to make fun of black people. Dressing up as a black pop culture figure is not making fun or denigrating black people, it is a tribute.
Re: Afronerd – When Orson Welles theater performed MacBeth in Harlem in the 1930s with an all black cast set in Haiti was that "blackface?"
