Lorde SLAMS Drake & Nicki Minaj! Calls Them "Irrelevant!"

nicki minaj lorde

Here we go again!!!

It seems like Lorde is ready to throw shade over EVERYONE in the music industry!

After already bashing David Guetta and Selena Gomez, the uncensored 17-year-old is now lashing out at Drake and Nicki Minaj for their rhymes' subject matter.

Lorde said:

“Around the middle of last year I started listening to a lot of rap, like Nicki Minaj and Drake. They all sing about such opulence, stuff that just didn’t relate to me—or anyone that I knew. I began thinking, ‘How are we listening to this? It’s completely irrelevant’.”

Ay dios mio!!!

Can someone feed this girl some humble pie??!

Nicki and Drake might sing about the good life, but there is plenty of room for EVERYONE in the biz!

Do U think Lorde has gone too far?!

I don't think it was a diss! If you think about it, Drake and Nicki rap about things pertaining to their culture and some people can't relate. So, Lorde finds the songs irrelevant to what's going on in her life personally. That's my interpretation, I may be wrong. But, honestly if you look at everything and anything someone says as a diss/insult, you are going to be constantly offended.

  3. 3

She's right. Rap used to actually tell a story. Now it is just bragging and posturing.

Actually Perez the level of wealth and consumerism that celebrities elicit is both unattainable and actual un sustainable. Due to the finite about of resources on this planet, there actually isnt "enough room in the biz" for EVERYONE. One out of eight people do not have access to clean drinking water, so yes I would say rapping about private jets and lavish parties is in every sense of the word irrelevant.

This post is misleading. This quote is taken from Interview magazine where Lorde is explaining what her song 'Royals" is about. By "irrelevant" she means that it makes no sense that regular people would want to listen to music about a lifestyle they they can't relate to, so she decided to write a song about it. Her argument is much more complex than a diss to Drake or Nicki Minaj.

This are the kind of comments that she may regret have done in the future… let´s see what your song are about in a couple of years…

she is acting like such an underground artist and whatever, but let´s be honest, she is in there with them at the top ten, so… no little Lorde, i don't buy either their bullshit or yours…

Lorde is talented and such, but let´s not forget that she is a damn teenager, taking so serious an opinion from a 16 years old is just silly. I´ll respect her if in her 20 ´s she is still in this state of mind… for now, this just seems so pretentious and kind of a tantrum "look at me, im the new cool stuff, i think different and shit"

    7

She's 17. Stop thinking she's giving deep insights into the social strata. She's just being a know it all teenager that doesn't know anything about life yet.

  8. 8

    Dear Lorde,

Put on your big girl underpants and stop making stupid comments. You're a little young to be burning some pretty big bridges here.

She's right. The idiots who listen to Drake and Minaj are probably older than her, and not as wise to see how horrible and useless their music is. Good for her for calling it out.

  10. lucy says – reply to this

    10

Well the question was about how she was influenced to write royals, and the songs pretty much sums up that most of pop music and raps subject matter is irrelevant for young people. She has previously said she is like the biggest fan of Drake and of Nicki Minaj so i think you are just trying to stir.

lol she's not wrong.. and PLEASE PEREZ, SHE BY NO MEANS IS SLAMMING "EVERYONE" IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.

everyone needs to chill, Lorde is mad smart.. see how just climbed that chart at 16? where were they? drake was still in a wheelchair and nicki wasn't a fuckin circus show.. SO. bottom line. listen to her speak, she is mad literate, informed, and has infinite potential in this mindless industry.

PEREZ YOUR LIFE IS A JOKE BRUH.

I SO AGREE WITH HER, MY FRIENDS AND I SIT THERE AND BE LIKE HOW DOES DRAKE AND MINAJ SONG RELATE TO EVERYONE, THERE RAPPING ABOUT THE 1% THE RICH, IS ALL SEX DRUG AND MONEY. THAT WHY I STOP LISTENING TO RAP ALL TOGETHER.

  13. Sharon says – reply to this

    13

Um wtf, you seemed to have left out Lana Del Rey who was also part of that quote. Also Lorde LOVES Nicki shes like her biggest inspiration saying "shes an important female in pop" and that she "effing slays" its on wikipedia for gods sake and even tweeted her saying "@NICKIMINAJ i love you SO much." she has also said she loves Drake and his new record is soo good. Stop trying to twist her words, all she meant was she couldn't relate to their music. Its actually so sad that a 17 year old girl from NZ whose never been media trained before can't give her own respectable entitled opinion on music without media articles TWISTING it into a 'slam' or 'diss'. Like ffs Perez you are actually ruining her rep for things you've twisted.

  14. Grrrtruth says – reply to this

    14

I think she's wrong about Nicki Minaj. Her music isn't just about materialism. BUT Lorde's album is the sh*t. It's incredible and she talks about materialsim about as much as Nicki does.

    15

People act like she just willy nilly makes these comments during interviews. She's always going to be asked about what she thinks about her peers. What is she supposed to do…LIe? Hold back? Dumb herself down? Say what people want to hear? Nod yes or no? She may not know everything at her age (but who does?), but she's a very intelligent young woman with an insight to the world much more refreshing than some of her peers. Maybe she should just shut up and twerk.

This is completely taken out of context you dumb fuck. She was relating it to the content of "Royals". Lorde has actually praised Nicki and Drake so stop trying to stir shit and get a real job. This i

Insult? dis? SLAMS? "calls them irrellevant?" She said none of that. nikki and drake aren't irrelevant but their lyrics are irrelevant to the majority of people who can't go spending $500 in one night and hook up with dumb bitchezz. Fuckin american media putting twist and words in other peoples mouths, in that quote, there was nothing insulting or anything that seemed hostile, the picture doesn't help yet media is trying to spark this drama war between them to entertain the consumers (you) like it's some stupid fuckin reality show. I agree with Ella mainly cause it was simply an opinion and if not actual facts. Does drake and nikki sing about the fine life and what i can say as hedonism? Yes they do, so it is a fact. Ella is saying what we're thinking, what alot of us who don't go clubbing, or spend 100$ on dinner every night or wear designer clothes and accessories. I find it ironic(or contradicting?) that selena covers royals at her shows when she is almost a prime example of what that song is, considering she grew up with a fortunate enough family to even get a roll in wizards of waverly place, then used her connections in hollywood to begin her singing career. (which isn't really a bad thing but made things waaaaay easier for her)

    19

this bitch is as anti-black as they come. her entire song disses black culture and hip hop culture… because DUH she's better than that. she can't imagine why black people want to celebrate the fuck out of their success and why they use it to motivate themselves. she's too white for her own good.

    Re: Sharon
THANK YOU! American media trying to ruffle some feathers and taking advantage of girl who speaks her opinions, and here's american media trying to start shit, if i could get paid for every paparazzi i killed…
“Lorde SLAMS Drake & Nicki Minaj! Calls Them "Irrelevant!" I mean really? way to use words she said and add more to it. I really think the only to stop shit like this is if another country invaded america, maybe the citizens will stop acting so arrogant.

  21. 21

    what she sais is true

  22. shut up everyone says – reply to this

    22

ok honestly Lorde is best just keeping quiet for her sake. She is only a teenager she thinks she knows what is her path but maybe not I mean c'mon when miley was17 she said she would never drink or do drugs or anything of the sort now look at her now. Yes I know Lorde is at number 1 but not for the entire album most people I know have only heard Royals from Lorde. She not at number one because shes mad intellegent shes at number 1 because royals is a great song. Honestly Lorde is better off talking about her family I mean when she dissed Selena there was Cher and Joe calling Lorde out. Imean instead of mentioning Come and Get it say songs with the moral of blah blah blah and why basicly insult Taylor (coming from a person who cares very little for TS) instead say Im glad that there are people like demi lovato that teach us to love your body and your face and you.

    26

I don't think this was an actual insult. I just watched her You Oughta Know performance on VH1 and she named Drake as one of her influences… Plenty of artists will be irrelevant to somebody, doesn't make their music bad. Drake talks about where he came from to where he is now, plenty of artists do. Maybe somewhere can relate to where they've been but if you can't then listen to something else.

    27

The title of this article is outrageous. Lorde did not call Nicki or Drake irrelevant! She said that the content of their music is irrelevant to the lives of the listeners.

  28. 28

So far this annoying little twat is a one hit wonder, but that hasn't stopped her from talking shit as if she's Madonna.

  29. Lucy says – reply to this

    29

You are actually obnoxious. This title is so misleading. She did not call Nicki or Drake irrelevant.
Infact she has previously stated that she is a fan of both of their music. The interview was talking about the inspiration behind Royals, in which she acknowledged that the Top 40 and the music of Drake and Nicki Minaj in no way was relevant to her life, or the lives that her peers are living.

If you are going to to be this attention and click seeking i suggest in future you provide a link to the full interview so that people can understand the content instead of buying into your sad attempt to bully people.

    30

She did not say either of those two are irrelevant. The flashy lifestyle of which they rap is irrelevant to her. "Royals" has been#1 for 8 weeks now. Obviously people can relate to her message.

    31

Re: selinaaa – Well, if black culture is all about Cristal and gold teeth, as the song implies, then perhaps someone needs to call it out. Black culture has a lot more to offer than that. Lorde may be too white, but if a black artist wrote about the same thing, they would have been accused of selling out.

Hmm, I was going to say that she should maybe stop with the comments for fear of burning bridges - and becoming a one-hit wonder - but it seems if this quote was taken out of context then that's a whole other thing.

    35

Perez … Perez … you giant fucking drama queen! She didn't call them "irrelevant", she said their lyrics were irrelevant to her and her friends. She's not wrong. Sure, maybe some people can relate, but more than likely, they can't. It was a question about what inspired her to write Royals, and she answered it honestly - she'd also previously referenced Kanye and others regarding how they sing about isn't exactly all that real.

So far, there aint a damn thing the girl has said that I don't agree with - especially when you go and read the actual context instead of jumping on the insane little fanboi wagon and behaving like a bunch of future school-shooters.

Ok and now this little 17 year old girl will start or is making a shit ton of money so how long will she be relevant to people like us/me who have jobs where we make $50,000 or like me a hell of alot less I want to see how long she sings this poor little girl stuff for!!!

i don't find this a diss, i mean she is not saying they are irrelevant she is simply saying she does not get what they are talking about so it means nothing to her

  40. Amanda Theriault says – reply to this

    40

Gah, you aren't even listening to WHAT she's saying, just focusing on several words of it. She said that what they were singing about didn't hold any relevance on her life, not that THEY were irrelevant.

Thought you were 'past' your drama days…

  41. NN says – reply to this

    41

Hello, that's exactly what her song "Royals" is about. She's talking about their lifestyles being completely irrelevant for the people listening to their music. You can only sing about how rich and successful you are so much until the average Joe gets stick of hearing it. Good for you, you made it, let's move on, find new material, maybe?

  42. maggic747 says – reply to this

    42

Now to an extent I agree. I find Nicki Minaj to be one of the absolute worst rappers of today. But it seems like she's getting quite a big ego. Her music isn't all that phenomenal either — I would rather listen to Hold On, We're Going Home over Royals any minute of any day.

Well in context this is hardly as bad as it has been made out. She was talking about how her song royals showed the reality of what she was living and what most other people were living while most rap songs tend to talk about having so much money, partying all day and night, having fancy cars and mansions and she could not relate to those factors of rap. the people who believe this article are ignorant and i bet you don't even know what opulence means.
