Katy Perry Reveals Her SHOCKING Religious Beliefs! See What She Said About Not Believing HERE!

| Filed under: Katy PerryMarie Claire

katy perry reveals religious beliefs

Considering she was born to two pastors, being religious almost seems like a given.

But Katy Perry is hardly typical, so we can't really be all that surprised that she hasn't exactly followed in her parent's footsteps.

And now she's straying even further away from her parents as she's revealing her surprising religious beliefs, or rather lack thereof!

Katy opened up to Marie Claire about the often delicate subject:

"I don't believe in a heaven or a hell or an old man sitting on a throne. I believe in a higher power bigger than me because that keeps me accountable. Accountability is rare to find, especially with people like myself, because nobody wants to tell you something you don't want to hear. I actually don't trust people who start to turn on me because they get scared of telling me the truth. I'm not Buddhist, I'm not Hindu, I'm not Christian, but I still feel like I have a deep connection with God. I pray all the time—for self-control, for humility. There's a lot of gratitude in it. Just saying 'thank you' sometimes is better than asking for things."

While many celebs might shy away from this touchy talk, Katy jumped right in!

She's got a point. It really doesn't matter what you are so long as you're a good person.

And Katy is totes in the good person club!

This doesn't make sense. Why would she make a song called "By the Grace of God" if she wasn't Christian? And she talked about reading the bible and scriptures and everything else. I'm disappointed with her for these remarks. Blasphemy.

Its shocking she doesnt believe in god and uses her brain to realize that it is all a myth? Good for Katy for not conforming like most people do these days

If I remember correctly Katy was raised in a really religious family and her fathers a preacher. I love Katys comment. I can really relate to her.

I bet Katy has kind of a "buffet style" approach to religion and spiritual stuff. I'm the same way myself. She probably likes some aspects of Christianity and not others. There's good and bad parts to all religions. Look at Islam. There's plenty of controversial parts to Islam. There's probably good and bad aspects to Buddhism and Hindu stuff too.

Katy shouldn't go overboard with all that spiritual stuff. A lot of the self help books and enlightenment stuff seems super interesting at first and then you realize later that it was all kind of waste of time. If your self help and spiritual stuff helps you in the main arenas of your life then stick with it. If you don't apply what you learn and make it habitual those self help books won't do you a lot of good.

Hopefully, Katy is not getting obsessed with religion and spiritual stuff and talking about it constantly around people who may NOT be into it. Let's face it, spirituality, religion and politics can be VERY touchy subjects with some people. Probably better for Katy to avoid those topics in interviews. There's more to life than religion and spiritual stuff you know.

With Katy's fortune, there's tons of different hobbies she could take up when she's not working on her music career. I love to go on long hikes and ride my bike like Katy does. Katy should do that whenever possible. I like walking around big trees and in wide open spaces in a national park … just watching and listening to nature. Laying on a blanket and taking a nap or meditating can be very "grounding". Just be sure to bring some of that Lemon natural bug repellent for your skin and some DEET bug repellent to put on your clothes and you'll be fine.

It's good to hear that Katy's sister is a yoga instructor. That is something that is practical that Katy should do on a regular basis along with her other aerobic and weight training type exercise. Yoga is great for dealing with stress and preventing neck and back pain and keeping your body flexible and capable of handling heavy physical demands like dancing. If NFL players and other pro athletes are doing it then so should Katy.

I don't have a problem with Ms. Perry's belief of a higher power (whom she chooses to call God) to remain accountable. All recognized "religions" believe in a common thread to treat others as you would want to be treated. The major differences between religions lie in the ritual, ceremonies and literature that each chooses to adopt and follow. It is my opinion that too many who consider themselves religious are so involved with the ritual and ceremony associated with a religion that they ignore the needs (spiritual and practical) of people in general. I also believe that to become a truly global society we must learn to appreciate others (love others?) as individuals and not necessarily as part of a religion, political affiliation or ethnicity.

She has a Jesus tattoo on her wrist though….

Its about time people wake up to the fact that christianity is a myth written by sheephearders. The world is not the center of the universe and the universe is not 7000 years old. WAKE UP.

  14. 14

I'm not religious. Katy Perry definitely comes across as religious to me, and she's had songs that were very Christian like. I guess she has now decided to try and distance herself from the religion she was raised with. hmm.

  15. 15

I am not religious at all. I find it strange that she would say she believes in a "god" or prays to "god" and then says she is not christian. That seems quite hypocritical. It also does not make sense to say you beileve in a "higher power" and refer to that higher power as "god" and say you are not christioan. While other relgions worship "gods" in the western world using the term "god" is pretty much understood to refer to the "christian god". Especially when she says she is NOT buddhist or hindu. Frankly I oculd care less what shedoes or does not believe in, but she should speak clearly.

When are you people going to realize that you don't have to be christian to believe in god?

  17. Daisy says – reply to this

Re: Annie – OMG thank you lol People are so dumb. You can have a relationship with God without being attached to any specific organized religion. I don't see why people don't get that.

  18. sarah says – reply to this

ummmm ..doesnt she have "Jesus" written on her wrist? "I'm not Christian, but I still feel like I have a deep connection with God" YET shes not a christian .. funny how these people have these dumb ass/ contradictive perspectives but are praised about they way they look at it.

  19. mdb says – reply to this

Re: sarah – Is it not possible to read about the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth and even practice what he preached without committing to a particular religion or considering Jesus a deity. By the way, God is just one name used to refer to a singular higher power. Allah and Yaweh are also used to refer to the same type of higher(unknown) power. Closed-mindedness breeds fear and fear gives birth to prejudice and hate. People need to educate themselves, open their minds(and "open up their hearts"). "LOVE THY NEIGHBOR/BROTHER AS YOU WOULD LOVE THYSELF", no matter who may have said it first.

    Smart Girl.

  27. mdb says – reply to this

That's right. You don't have to believe Jesus Christ is the son of God or one in the same with God or even believe in the teachings of Jesus in order to have a belief in a higher power(God, Allah,Yaweh,or whatever). For example, members of both the Jewish faith and Muslim faith believe in one superior god, though not in Jesus Christ as one in the same with that god or as a savior sent from that one god like CHRISTians believe. News flash: Jesus Christ of Nazareth was supposedly born into the Jewish faith. There were no Christians(followers of Christ) until after Jesus died. If you were to compare the Old Testament from the Christians' bible with the Torah(Jewish Holy Book) and the Koran(Muslim Holy Book) you might find many similarities.
In the mean time Happy Holidays and PEACE y'all !

I believe what she is trying to say is simply that she believes in God and have a personal intimate relationship with Him that is continually growing. She prays all the time and even gives thanks to God after singing on stage. Her songs also contains messages that pastors like Joyce Meyer or speakers like Nick Vujicic speak about, that's why her songs bring hope and bring people closer to God. In conclusion, what she meant was that she is committed to God and believe in Him, but do not believe in religions. For truly, a person can be a Christianbut they still act like how they were before they accepted Christ. God bless y'alland mmay the Lord be with y'all. Have a nice day :)

Re: selizabeth – Please do not use my name and flame someone, thanks.

Anyway I get what she means and she is not a hypocritical or not reglionous - she is spiritual and obvious believes in being a good person and that is the most important thing. I am a spiritual person myself and it doesnt mean I believe there is a man up there frowning at me from heaven. I believe in the divine and I also believe that bad people get what there deserve eventually.

Katy Perry married Russell Brand, she dates John Mayer, she contradicts herself numerous times in one paragraph, and she allegedly keeps some of Miley Cyrus' hair in her purse. I hate to judge others, but Katy Perry sounds crazy as hell, y'all.
