Katy Perry Suffers A Serious Performance Malfunction At The 2013 NRJ Music Awards! Watch HERE!

| Filed under: Music MinuteKaty Perry

Katy Perry had a little trouble Roaring at this year's NRJ Music Awards.

She had barely begun performing her hit song when it became obvious to the crowd that Katy was NOT in sync with her music track and background visuals!

The problems were so noticeable, the host of the show actually stopped Katy's performance mid-song and apologized!

Katy restarted the song, performing seemingly without monitors or backing tracks because the audio quality seems significantly worse!

But gurl is a total pro and took it all in stride, finishing her Roar with a smile!

Ch-ch-check out the video (above) to see the technical snafu that held her down, then see her get up because she is a champion …AFTER THE JUMP!!!

That woman should not be touring. She can't sing her way out of a paper bag. She is terrible live. Her voice is too weak. Her ROAR sounds like a WHIMPER.

Katy might have had a cold you know. Every singer is going to have some nights where something is not quite right with their voice … especially towards the end of a long world tour. Katy needs to take good care of her vocal cords. Plenty of sleep, lots of water, plenty of warm ups/warm downs, use throat lozenges and sprays recommended by doctors, avoid cigarette smoke, etc. I'm sure she has a vocal coach that has her on some sort of vocal fitness routine. Professional singers need coaches just like NFL quarterbacks do.

Re: judeyo – Katy sings great in "live" performances most of the time. Go to YouTube and type in this keyword … Katy Perry live on letterman thinking of you. I think she was spectacular singing during that performance. Watch a few of Katy's MTV Unplugged songs on YouTube. She sings good with just a microphone and an acoustic guitar. A singer's voice can get messed up by lots of things like dry, stagnant air in airplanes, cigarette smoke, diet, etc. Maybe Katy is taking too many vitamins or something when she should just be eating fresh organic veggies and lean meats like chicken and salmon that has "good fats" and all that. I saw a picture of Katy's big bags of vitamins she was taking. Who knows, maybe that is the problem.

Re: someguy2621 – NO, she does NOT usually sing well live. Please go listen to last night's X Factor Finale. maybe the worst ever. she SHOULD lip sync - and quit calling herself a singer and just be a big boobed pretty performer.

Re: PROOF – So you conclude that Katy cannot sing well based on this one performance? LOL. Give me a break. Even singers like Mariah Carey have nights where their singing voice is messed up. It happens. A singer's voice is not like a guitar or a Steinway piano that you can simply tune up and it stays perfect.

Sometimes there really are technical malfunctions that mess things up as well. Singers are bit like NFL QBs. Sometimes they are awesome, sometimes they are average, and sometimes they have a bad night.

So Katy didn't sing perfectly this one night. Big deal. She'll probably work like a maniac to make sure that this doesn't happen as often in the future. However, sometimes things like getting a cold, allergies, sound engineer glitches or whatever are things that are out of her control.

What a pro! Better than the WTF! from Selena Gomez with her sound snafu.

Trooper. She did sound a little sharp. Monitors can make a big difference.

  14. Terra says – reply to this

In all fairness, most artists use lip-syncing when performing because it's hard to have good vocal quality when you're dancing and jumping around. True, she probably uses programs like Melodyne to alter her voice for CDs but I would imagine everyone does at this point, even people who do sing well live. Any kind of movement while you're trying to sing makes it sound worse than when you're in a studio recording it over and over until you hit the perfect one, so yeah, no one sings live as well as they do on the CD — that's why most lip sync or something if they know they're going to be dancing as well otherwise they'll sound out of breath and off key. Try it sometime, dance around and sing your best and see what happens.

Re: someguy2621 – I conclude that Katy can't sing because she stinks In EVERY live performance!!!! I agree, she is one I would prefer to lip sink!!! GO AWAY KATY!!!!!

  16. pluperfect says – reply to this

why couldn't this have happened to selena gomez???? that would have been SOOOOOOO freaking funny. she probably would have ran off stage after the host told her to start over or came up with some bull-ish excuse

  17. oh my says – reply to this

Re: Terra – yes - i may agree with you… IF SHE COULD DANCE!!! she has one move… leg out to side and slide it in. she ain't no janet jackson.

  18. Teresa says – reply to this

I am not a fan of her, but you do not have to dance to be a successful pop singer. Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne and Alicia Keys usually don't dance, but they are very successful.

  19. oh my says – reply to this

Re: Teresa – agreed!! - my comment was in response to the above post saying her bad vocals were due to her dancing.

  20. nate says – reply to this

    Re: oh my
the ones you mention, dont dance at all, but at least they can sing and hit notes. katy doesnt dance and doest sing either.

  21. ladykind says – reply to this

Re: pluperfect – . Lol she wouldn't even sing! Seeing as that she can't *remembers MTV. Movie awards*

  23. mdb says – reply to this

Just read a short apology from the producers of the NRJ awards show taking the blame for the technical difficulties incurred by Ms. Perry during her performance as it was a bad backing track that caused the problem. They also stated that Ms. Perry was in fact singing live before the performance was interrupted. She continued to restart and finish "Roar" singing independently from any backing sound.
KP uses backing tracks during some of her performances(as many others artists do). She does all or most of the harmonies/background vocals on her recordings and utilizes background tracks to fill in sound/vocals during the show so the live performance sounds closer to the recording. Technically this is not lip-synching as she does not silently mouth the lyrics to her tunes. It's more like karaoke .

  24. PROOF says – reply to this

Re: mdb – So then what was the problem at the x-factor w unconditionally…. or at John Mayer's concert? Why does her singing suck so bad every time it's live?

I believe it was technical difficulties - I believe she thought she was singing 'live'
(to the track in her ear monitor), but they accidentally played the wrong track to the audience. She didn't get busted lip syncing. She got busted singing terrrrribly. The controversy is not on whether or not she lip synced - the controversy is that the difference between the recorded track (first part) and the live version (second start) were CRAZY bad.

  25. 25

Hahaha! Karma for stealing the song in the first place.
