One Direction Dodges Legal Action From Def Leppard For Similar Sounding Song!

Whew, that was a close one, right?

The guys of One Direction were this close to landing themselves in a sticky situation with the British rock band, Def Leppard!

While some say that 1D's Midnight Memories' melodic tune is similar to that of Def Leppard's classic Pour Some Sugar On Me, the band's guitarists are saying they're not taking legal action!

Phil Collen did agree that the songs were similar in structure, but his co-guitarist Vivian Campbell says:

"The chords are one-four-five. Those are the blues. You don’t get more basic than that. I think what’s more reminiscent of the Leppard thing is the production, the sound, the vocals, the reverb and the way it’s assembled.

That is very flattering that all of a sudden these kids think it’s a cool sound. I think a lot of people of their generation aren’t going to connect their music to ours."

Like they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

At least the Def Leppard guitarists thinks it's cool!

And besides, the two songs barely sound similar as is! All's well that ends well! Lolz!

" Pour some sugar on me, ooh, in the name of love
Pour some sugar on me, c'mon fire me up
Pour your sugar on me, I can't get enough
I'm hot, sticky sweet from my head to my feet, yeah"

"An' here I go again on my own.
Goin' down the only road I've ever known.
Like a hobo I was born to walk alone.
An' I've made up my mind. I ain't wasting no more time"

These people do realize that the musical scale is made up of only 7 notes right? People are suing each other because of cord progressions? How about suing because somebody stole lyrics from you? I know these guys won't bring lawsuits against One Direction, because they're smart enough to know that you can't copyright a musical note. You don't own the musical scale, but you do own lyrics you write. People that think they own the musical scale and think they can copyright notes as if they invented them need to fuck off and get out of the music industry, because they're not in it for the music, they're only in it for the money. Sue someone if they stole your lyrics and plagiarized the words of your song, but don't think you can stand there and sue just because someone copies cord progressions.

Re: John – I'm not a lawyer, but, you can't copyright protect a chord progression anyways under american law. You can copyright protect a melody and lyrics. Joe Satriani won his case against a famous pop band. So, it never hurts to try to sue if you have a valid complaint. Some songs are so similar, you can superimpose them on top of each other and play them together as one song.

"Born This Way" and that Madonna song comes to mind…although I'm having a Senior moment and can't pull the name of it from my head for the life of me!!! I think it's "Express Yourself" (??)

One Direction does not copy ANYONE. Don't be jealous, just because they are young, good-looking and successful.

Re: Linnea – you do realize there's no such thing as "the musical scale", right?

Re: Bianca – Nobody is jealous of one direction. Males arent the jealous gender. Women are the jealous gender. Thats why women bash miley. Because she's young, good looking and successful. I'm older than those guys (30s) but i GUARANTEE YOU, my girl is better looking than any girl they are with (eye of the beholder. I know). So why would I be jealous of them? Women are the jealous gender. Women are so jealous of women, they train society (as mothers with nurturing power) to call women "gold diggers" for marrying a rich man. Jealous that trophy wives are younger, good looking and more successful at giving their children the ultimate gift: rich daddy. Women are the jealous gender. I dont think "jealousy" figures into this issue.

Re: tullymars – and some scales have more than 7 notes or have 5 notes.

Re: angie – A hardcore fan I may be, but oh, here's another possibility, that I know what I'm talking about and I know something about music and the scale? I study music in school. Also, I'm trained in it, so I happen to know about the scale, as it's required as part of the training. And One Direction is an awesome band, though they may be a boy band, they're definitely proving to have longevity in the industry. And this is coming from someone who doesn't like many boy bands. The only boy bands I like are BSB and One Direction. Both bands are definitely going to have long careers in the industry… Well, BSB already has proven that, anyway. And One Direction is proving that as well, as all of their albums are majorly successful, each album outselling the previous one.

Re: John – for someone who studies music you should know what a "band" is comprised of?
