An Italian court has once again found Amanda Knox guilty of killing her roommate Meredith Kercher. The verdict, issued by two judges and six jurors, came after several hours of deliberations.
Knox, who already served 4 years in an Italian prison between 2007 and 2011 before an appeals court threw out her previous conviction, is now being sentenced AGAIN!
This time to 28 years!
Amanda has been back in her hometown of Seattle though ever since she was released by authorities three years ago. But will she soon be brought back to Italy to be locked up a second time?
Just as before, when her original case was retried, the new guilty verdict will go before the Italian Supreme Court. But experts believe that with this second conviction, the high court will uphold the sentence given to Knox!
Italy would then have to fight for extradition of Knox and bring her back to Italy to serve her sentence.
But Amanda and her lawyers will likely argue that she cannot be convicted of the same crime twice. If she were to not surrender to Italian police, she would most likely be a wanted woman throughout the entire European Union. So traveling abroad would not be an option for the remainder of her life.
If the Supreme Court however throws out her case yet again, then Amanda might be in the clear for good.
The brother and sister of Meredith Kercher were at the courthouse today to hear the verdict being read.
There is no happy ending to this case. But whatever the outcome, we hope justice will be served.
