Rest in peace, Plutarch.
We reported earlier that Philip Seymour Hoffman's death wouldn't affect the release date of the two final Hunger Games: Mockingjay installments, but his passing left one major and emotional scene unfilmed!
"We’re all extraordinarily sad. But as it relates to production, it’s going to have no impact. Obviously, we're going to have a couple of work-around issues but the movie will be creatively whole. His performances in both [remaining] movies will be up to the best of his craft. We feel it will be a good tribute to him."
When asked for some more deets on the scene in question, the exec dodged the question, like Katniss dodging Marvel's spear in the 74th Hunger Games!
"Why would I want to give people something to look for two years from now?"
According to a source with ties to the project, there are some tricks of the trade that make that final scene still doable:
"You can do digital things, you can have conversations where you’re not focusing on him but the people he’s talking to."
In fact, effects supervisor Rob Legato, who recently worked on The Wolf of Wall Street says that a CGI PSH could be created for a shot or two:
"These days the technology of using someone's likeness is a whole lot easier to do. I won't say you could generate a Philip Seymour Hoffman with all the acting ability, but you could certainly replicate him for a shot or two."
Whatever they do, we know that the studio will find a fitting way to rework that last scene. Just like a propo, things can be fixed in editing!
We wonder if the scene in question is Finnick and Annie's wedding? Or perhaps the scene at Katniss' hospital room? Time will tell.
We wish we could have seen that scene with Philip, and that he was here with us today. So sad.
