Woody Allen Denies Sexually Abusing His Daughter In Open Letter: "I Did Not Molest Dylan"!

| Filed under: Icky Icky PooSad SadWoody AllenDysfunctional FamiliesGIFs

Woody Allen finally responded to recent allegations of child molestation.

On Friday afternoon the 78-year-old director and occasional actor published a lengthy essay in The New York Times.

Amongst other things, it details exactly what happened so many years ago. Well, what he says happened at least.

Unsurprisingly, his version of past events attempts to absolve him of any and all wrongdoing — Woody flatly denies ever molesting his daughter Dylan Farrow.

He says in the open-letter's final paragraph:

"Of course, I did not molest Dylan. I loved her and hope one day she will grasp how she has been cheated out of having a loving father and exploited by a mother more interested in her own festering anger than her daughter’s well-being."

He also throws shade at Mia Farrow multiple times.

Woody strongly implies Dylan's mother and his ex-lover perhaps coached their daughter into fabricating a story of sexual abuse, in some ways echoing the "woman scorned" talking-point his defenders have fallen back on all week.

Many of us may never know how well Woody's narrative reflects reality, but — regardless of what may or may not have happened a long time ago in an attic far, far away — many of his words were curious. Why did the filmmaker go off on tangents wondering whether or not Ronan Farrow is actually Frank Sinatra's son?

Woody revealed:

"I pause here for a quick word on the Ronan situation. Is he my son or, as Mia suggests, Frank Sinatra’s? Granted, he looks a lot like Frank with the blue eyes and facial features, but if so what does this say?"

We really aren't sure.

Well, no matter who you believe, whether you think Mr. Allen sexually abused his daughter or not, he swears he's done talking about it in public.

These were his final words:

"This piece will be my final word on this entire matter and no one will be responding on my behalf to any further comments on it by any party. Enough people have been hurt."

Indeed they have.

Read the director's entire response (below) and let us know whether U believe him:

"TWENTY-ONE years ago, when I first heard Mia Farrow had accused me of child molestation, I found the idea so ludicrous I didn’t give it a second thought. We were involved in a terribly acrimonious breakup, with great enmity between us and a custody battle slowly gathering energy. The self-serving transparency of her malevolence seemed so obvious I didn’t even hire a lawyer to defend myself. It was my show business attorney who told me she was bringing the accusation to the police and I would need a criminal lawyer.

I naïvely thought the accusation would be dismissed out of hand because of course, I hadn’t molested Dylan and any rational person would see the ploy for what it was. Common sense would prevail. After all, I was a 56-year-old man who had never before (or after) been accused of child molestation. I had been going out with Mia for 12 years and never in that time did she ever suggest to me anything resembling misconduct. Now, suddenly, when I had driven up to her house in Connecticut one afternoon to visit the kids for a few hours, when I would be on my raging adversary’s home turf, with half a dozen people present, when I was in the blissful early stages of a happy new relationship with the woman I’d go on to marry — that I would pick this moment in time to embark on a career as a child molester should seem to the most skeptical mind highly unlikely. The sheer illogic of such a crazy scenario seemed to me dispositive.

Notwithstanding, Mia insisted that I had abused Dylan and took her immediately to a doctor to be examined. Dylan told the doctor she had not been molested. Mia then took Dylan out for ice cream, and when she came back with her the child had changed her story. The police began their investigation; a possible indictment hung in the balance. I very willingly took a lie-detector test and of course passed because I had nothing to hide. I asked Mia to take one and she wouldn’t. Last week a woman named Stacey Nelkin, whom I had dated many years ago, came forward to the press to tell them that when Mia and I first had our custody battle 21 years ago, Mia had wanted her to testify that she had been underage when I was dating her, despite the fact this was untrue. Stacey refused. I include this anecdote so we all know what kind of character we are dealing with here. One can imagine in learning this why she wouldn’t take a lie-detector test.

Meanwhile the Connecticut police turned for help to a special investigative unit they relied on in such cases, the Child Sexual Abuse Clinic of the Yale-New Haven Hospital. This group of impartial, experienced men and women whom the district attorney looked to for guidance as to whether to prosecute, spent months doing a meticulous investigation, interviewing everyone concerned, and checking every piece of evidence. Finally they wrote their conclusion which I quote here: “It is our expert opinion that Dylan was not sexually abused by Mr. Allen. Further, we believe that Dylan’s statements on videotape and her statements to us during our evaluation do not refer to actual events that occurred to her on August 4th, 1992… In developing our opinion we considered three hypotheses to explain Dylan’s statements. First, that Dylan’s statements were true and that Mr. Allen had sexually abused her; second, that Dylan’s statements were not true but were made up by an emotionally vulnerable child who was caught up in a disturbed family and who was responding to the stresses in the family; and third, that Dylan was coached or influenced by her mother, Ms. Farrow. While we can conclude that Dylan was not sexually abused, we can not be definite about whether the second formulation by itself or the third formulation by itself is true. We believe that it is more likely that a combination of these two formulations best explains Dylan’s allegations of sexual abuse.”

Could it be any clearer? Mr. Allen did not abuse Dylan; most likely a vulnerable, stressed-out 7-year-old was coached by Mia Farrow. This conclusion disappointed a number of people. The district attorney was champing at the bit to prosecute a celebrity case, and Justice Elliott Wilk, the custody judge, wrote a very irresponsible opinion saying when it came to the molestation, “we will probably never know what occurred.”

But we did know because it had been determined and there was no equivocation about the fact that no abuse had taken place. Justice Wilk was quite rough on me and never approved of my relationship with Soon-Yi, Mia’s adopted daughter, who was then in her early 20s. He thought of me as an older man exploiting a much younger woman, which outraged Mia as improper despite the fact she had dated a much older Frank Sinatra when she was 19. In fairness to Justice Wilk, the public felt the same dismay over Soon-Yi and myself, but despite what it looked like our feelings were authentic and we’ve been happily married for 16 years with two great kids, both adopted. (Incidentally, coming on the heels of the media circus and false accusations, Soon-Yi and I were extra carefully scrutinized by both the adoption agency and adoption courts, and everyone blessed our adoptions.)

Mia took custody of the children and we went our separate ways.

I was heartbroken. Moses was angry with me. Ronan I didn’t know well because Mia would never let me get close to him from the moment he was born and Dylan, whom I adored and was very close to and about whom Mia called my sister in a rage and said, “He took my daughter, now I’ll take his.” I never saw her again nor was I able to speak with her no matter how hard I tried. I still loved her deeply, and felt guilty that by falling in love with Soon-Yi I had put her in the position of being used as a pawn for revenge. Soon-Yi and I made countless attempts to see Dylan but Mia blocked them all, spitefully knowing how much we both loved her but totally indifferent to the pain and damage she was causing the little girl merely to appease her own vindictiveness.

Here I quote Moses Farrow, 14 at the time: “My mother drummed it into me to hate my father for tearing apart the family and sexually molesting my sister.” Moses is now 36 years old and a family therapist by profession. “Of course Woody did not molest my sister,” he said. “She loved him and looked forward to seeing him when he would visit. She never hid from him until our mother succeeded in creating the atmosphere of fear and hate towards him.” Dylan was 7, Ronan 4, and this was, according to Moses, the steady narrative year after year.

I pause here for a quick word on the Ronan situation. Is he my son or, as Mia suggests, Frank Sinatra’s? Granted, he looks a lot like Frank with the blue eyes and facial features, but if so what does this say? That all during the custody hearing Mia lied under oath and falsely represented Ronan as our son? Even if he is not Frank’s, the possibility she raises that he could be, indicates she was secretly intimate with him during our years. Not to mention all the money I paid for child support. Was I supporting Frank’s son? Again, I want to call attention to the integrity and honesty of a person who conducts her life like that.

NOW it’s 21 years later and Dylan has come forward with the accusations that the Yale experts investigated and found false. Plus a few little added creative flourishes that seem to have magically appeared during our 21-year estrangement.

Not that I doubt Dylan hasn’t come to believe she’s been molested, but if from the age of 7 a vulnerable child is taught by a strong mother to hate her father because he is a monster who abused her, is it so inconceivable that after many years of this indoctrination the image of me Mia wanted to establish had taken root? Is it any wonder the experts at Yale had picked up the maternal coaching aspect 21 years ago? Even the venue where the fabricated molestation was supposed to have taken place was poorly chosen but interesting. Mia chose the attic of her country house, a place she should have realized I’d never go to because it is a tiny, cramped, enclosed spot where one can hardly stand up and I’m a major claustrophobe. The one or two times she asked me to come in there to look at something, I did, but quickly had to run out. Undoubtedly the attic idea came to her from the Dory Previn song, “With My Daddy in the Attic.” It was on the same record as the song Dory Previn had written about Mia’s betraying their friendship by insidiously stealing her husband, André, “Beware of Young Girls.” One must ask, did Dylan even write the letter or was it at least guided by her mother? Does the letter really benefit Dylan or does it simply advance her mother’s shabby agenda? That is to hurt me with a smear. There is even a lame attempt to do professional damage by trying to involve movie stars, which smells a lot more like Mia than Dylan.

After all, if speaking out was really a necessity for Dylan, she had already spoken out months earlier in Vanity Fair. Here I quote Moses Farrow again: “Knowing that my mother often used us as pawns, I cannot trust anything that is said or written from anyone in the family.” Finally, does Mia herself really even believe I molested her daughter? Common sense must ask: Would a mother who thought her 7-year-old daughter was sexually abused by a molester (a pretty horrific crime), give consent for a film clip of her to be used to honor the molester at the Golden Globes?

Of course, I did not molest Dylan. I loved her and hope one day she will grasp how she has been cheated out of having a loving father and exploited by a mother more interested in her own festering anger than her daughter’s well-being. Being taught to hate your father and made to believe he molested you has already taken a psychological toll on this lovely young woman, and Soon-Yi and I are both hoping that one day she will understand who has really made her a victim and reconnect with us, as Moses has, in a loving, productive way. No one wants to discourage abuse victims from speaking out, but one must bear in mind that sometimes there are people who are falsely accused and that is also a terribly destructive thing. (This piece will be my final word on this entire matter and no one will be responding on my behalf to any further comments on it by any party. Enough people have been hurt.)"

Yeah. OJ said he didn't kill his wife, Pete Rose said he never bet on baseball, Perez Hilton says he's no longer a cyber bully. People can lie.

"I very willingly took a lie-detector test and of course passed because I had nothing to hide. I asked Mia to take one and she wouldn’t."
Is this true? If so there is literally no reason to talk about it anymore. You can just stop reading right there and never listen to a word Mia says ever again. Glad to see this joke of a site isn't taking sides though…

I believe Allen's lie test was conducted by someone whom his legal team hired. He refused to take on administered by the state.
Sounds like Allen protests too much. Plus, he has always liked underage women. It isn't normal for a guy even in 50s at the time to be with a teenager, Soon Yi Creepy

  6. 6

Strange, Perez that you did not say, when Dylan made her allegations "Well, what she says happened at least."

    Judge and jury ?

My uncle was wrongly accused of sexual abuse by a troubled teen and it nearly killed him. If there is any truth in the lie detector statement, then I do believe him 100%. Farrow had a very good motive to do everything in her power to destroy him. Some people can get very nasty when they get hurt. How often do you see parents using their children to hurt their estranged partner, especially when betrayal rips a family apart.

All right, I do not know Woody, and yes, the fact that he fell in love with his girlfriend's adopted daughter is rather weird & creepy (Celine Dion and her husband have a similar story & they've been married forever). But there is a difference between sleeping with a fully developed 17 year old and having sex with a 7 year old child. I was sexually active when I was 17 and my boyfriend was much older, does that make him a pedophile? It is also well established that pedophiles will do it again. It seems to me that other kids would have come forward…

URGH he makes me sick, how can he say in the same breath he married his step daughter BUT did not molest Dylan. Its about time Dylan got her justice and this creepo predator is dealt with

He is a professional storyteller and writes for a living. This should not be taken with merit. The whole part about him being found innocent by the courts back then isn't true, since it never fully went to trial because of lack of evidence, and everyone knows that it's impossible to build a case on hearsay. Lie detectors aren't accountable, especially when they are orchestrated by your own legal team. Molested at such a young age, of course she would wait to speak out, if she ever did. Millions of victims do not come forward if they harbor any memories from when they were young, they return to a childlike mind & don't want to address it. And millions of victims don't have a critically lauded A-list director who molested them, which would bring more backlash THEM, because everyone will ignore anyone who has such power if the "genius" at hand is doing things that a normal person would be publicly castrated for. (Michael Jackson, Terry Richardson) She has NOTHING to gain from speaking out. If she wanted attention, I'm sure she would've said something before his tribute. Blaming Mia is a cheap easy way out because of HIS actions, and is insulting to his daughter, whom he claims he loves so much. Woody Allen is a creep. Anyone who dates his wife's daughter, adopted or not, and keeps nude pictures of her when she was 19 cannot disassociate with being a creep. I hope victims like Dylan will not let people with big words and affluence stop them from coming forward.

If you were going to molest someone in a mansion with other people. you would probably go where no one would think to look for you.

YOU KNOW WHATTTTTTT!!!! I don't think Woody wrote this. Or I think he wrote it with that other guy. You know the one that wrote that long article supporting Woody, that he wasn't exactly friends with Woody but had done a documentary on him. In this letter to NYT by Woody, he seems to hit on everything the guy said in his article, ie. chlostophobia (sp), ronan, etc.

Here is it: The Woody Allen Allegations: Not So Fast. by Robert B. Weide (dailybeast website). It reads almost like Robert's article. Or maybe Woody wrote Robert's???

    Re: PeterRe: Peter
"The whole part about him being found innocent by the courts back then isn't true, since it never fully went to trial because of lack of evidence"
Read it again, not at all what he said, and what he DID say, DID happen. An independent child abuse board DID conclude he was innocent. Everything else you said was pointless and wrong.

  20. 20

He does write scripts for a living. Took him days to write this one. Dylan should get hypnotized and find out the truth for herself. I'm sure Mia was PISSED when she found naked pics of Soon Yi in Woody's possession. They did get together when Soon Yi was 8. That is sick. Mia hates Woody and visa versa…kids all caught in the middle. I want to believe Dylan.

  21. 21

mewlover you know lie detecter tests are only 50% accurate and not used in courts

  22. 22

People who are calling him a liar are fucking bullies. He's a short awkward Jewish man with glasses so OF COURSE to you he is a freak of some sort. He didn't molest anyone. Fuck off.

  23. 23

I have known personally the vindictiveness of an ex-spouse and how the can poison a child's mind against another parent. Children love and trust their parents and when the one they are constantly with betray that trust by instilling horrible accusations against the other parent, it sticks. Generally when they grow up, they come to recognize the truth, but sometimes not if the brainwashing was too deep, the child was exceptionally young and no way to find the truth on their own. I believe Woody, especially after knowing he passed a lie detector and Mia refused. When you read the facts of the case, you cannot help but believe his side and I've said that since the story came out and I decided to find the facts myself before siding one way or the other. Mia seems one disturbed woman if she was willing to go to such extremes to turn a child so horrifically against their parent out of anger. Poor Dylan needs help to find the truth and heal.

  24. 24

    Two sides to every story
    Read the court transcript

  25. 25

He talked about Ronan being his son because the moron-o-bloggers have suggested it along side all this other nonsense. Stop convicting the guy. You're no different than the fucking witch hunters. Incredibly ignorant.

  26. 26

I'm going to jump on the "Mario is guilty" bandwagon the day it comes out that he's molesting his little Mongo. Because that day will happen more than likely. Poor Mongo.

  27. 27

Of course he's not a pedophile. Are people totally retarded? The guy's entire body of work is a testament to his innocence. Mia's the quintessential wacko bitch. I wish he came out on the actual money issues at stake here but he's still protecting her in spite of what it looks like. Bitch is broke and needs attention and money.

  28. 28

Mia and Woody should both be ordered to have lie detector test again by a court appointed person, it wouldn't take too much to re-investigate the case and determine the truth. Dylan should go under hypnotherapy to see if she can find out the truth once and for all.
It's a hard one to call, Woody could be guilty, he had no problems having a sexual relationship with Mia's other young daughter, but then again Mia could be lying, she did come across as extremely bitter and vindictive. And why would Ronan speak up woody's defense? What's his motivation to change sides, because its the truth or is it because he has issues with his mother and has decided to punish her?
The whole saga is just sad, for Dylan especially… we'll never know the real truth

  29. 29

If Woody lies about everything and actually molested his daughter this is the coldest letter ever written. If Mia Farrow lied and made her daughter believe she was molested that is the coldest revenge ever taken on a cheating boyfriend. Whoever lied in this mess - nobody wins. Personally I think everyone is actually telling what they think is the truth - if you ever been in the middle of a a conflict between two people and get to hear both sides you will come to realize how different people can see things and much they actually bend the reality to fit their image of reality.

Whatever happened or not happened - for Dylan Farrow it is real and having Woody Allen denying everything must feel terrible. For her to bring it out in the public out again - one can discuss how therapeutic that is really but she is the victim in all of this.

  30. 30

Re: charliechaplin@ – This is so true. Years ago, I had to take a lie detector test because something was stolen from my work. I agreed to take the lie detector test because I didn't steal anything and knew it would clear my name. Boy was I wrong! It said that I was lying of course nobody believe me when I said it was wrong. If I ever got asked to take one again I would definitely refuse to take one.

  31. senilga says – reply to this

I strongly believe that he is a child-molester and does what we all expected him to do:
    Denies everything!

Did anyone think that he would come forward and say, "Yes, I did it!" Of course not!

His adopted daughter is an adult. "Making things up" at this age, with no dog in the fight –she did not pen any books or movies, and no person in clear mind wants to be "famous" for being sexually assaulted as a child– is a not a believable theory of the case!

His marriage to his another adopted daughter, since he raised her from age 8 and then married her as soon as it became legal, is indicative that this man would not stop of having sexual desires for those whom he raised.

Yes, he officially married his current wife-former daughter, when she grew up. But, we do not know when he started grooming her for sex.

Dylan's letter described Woody' grooming techniques in such detail that it is hard to make it up. The letter is sounds very sincere and shows true pain .

This man must be rotting in jail!

  32. Peter says – reply to this

Re: MewLover34 – An independent child abuse board that was a part of a hospital. Not a judicial court. Not a trial. Not a jury. And there's a difference between concluding by an actual legal system and a group of hospital workers & doctors that signify whether someone was molested and if the person who did it is guilty or not. Read something before you try to comment with the mindset that you know everything, you moronic fuck. And if you defend this pervert, I hope you never have kids, and if you do, don't touch them- it's wrong.

  33. 33

I honestly don't know who's story to believe here. Dylan's sounds legit and I hate to even question someone who might be a victim but…I just don't know. If it's all true that Woody took a lie detector test and passed and Mia refused, while that's not admisable in court and proves nothing…if my child had been molested by ANYONE I'd take a million lie detector tests if I thought it might help put the ass in jail so her refusing is…questionable. As is the timing of the accusation and that no one else has ever accused him of something similar. Usually when someone gets accused, it encourages more victims to come forward.

Also, I really don't see why anyone needs to bring up the odd situation with his current wife. Is the fact he married someone he basically rasied odd as hell? Yeah of course it is. It's strange and has always weirded me out. But…there's nothing illegal there. We have no proof he groomed her or when it started, she's never accused him of anything. As far as anyone knows, they didn't do anything until it was legal. And yeah, a 50some year and a 17 year old is…disturbing as hell but it's not illegal and its leaps and bounds away from child molestation.

It wouldn't let me post the link. Go to rosie's t w i t t e r account and click on the vantity fair article. It goes over 10 facts about the case. Very important to look at them before you make up your mind. Personally I was abused by my parents. They beat me up in the middle of the night. They tore out half of my hair and left me with a black eye and a bruised face. This happened when I was 16. A social worker made me and my mother sit in a counseling session together. My mom told her that I lied and that I had been beaten up at school and blamed it on her. Abusers lie to cover up their stories. Just my two cents.

I am firmly convinced that Mia is on that molestation kick because of her brother who is a convicted child molester. Mia always was a kook and now she is a nutcase. And taking her kids down the same path.

  42. Kelly says – reply to this

I believe that Woody Allen did NOT molest his daughter Dylan for one reason, NO ONE ELSE has come forward accusing him of sexually abusing them. A child molester is a mentally ill person and they do not just molest one child, one time. If this were true, he would have molested Dylan multiple times, possibly molested his other children and would definitely have molested others. Also, being attracted to and dating younger women is NOT in any way the same thing as being a child molester and being attracted to children.

  43. 43

  44. 44

Re: Kelly – HE is married to this other daughter, and their relationship started when she was still his child. So, yes, another woman came up. AND another woman said that he started dating her when she was 17 and he was like 54. That's illegal. Look at the fact before you say something stupid like that

  45. 45

Re: pdrocksmysocks – Actually, that was the whole reason for the divorce. If you read the divorce papers, Mia found out that he was molesting Soonyi

Re: Peter – Thank you for your comment. I wholeheartedly agree with you. As a victim of sexual abuse, it was incredibly difficult to get my story out. I was shamed and silenced (especially for being a male). If Woody Allen truly loved and respected his daughter, he wouldn't have written such an elaborate defence.

  47. Joe says – reply to this

Re: Mooshoo123 – There was NO divorce because Woody and Mia never married. The hearings were over visitation rights.
And btw Woody should sue for the child support money Mia fraudulently obtained if Ronan is Sinatra's son. WITH INTEREST.

  48. SS says – reply to this

Re: Tom – He wrote the detailed defense an innocent man is entitled to write.
Jesus. Just because people get molested does not mean Woody did it. There is no proof for that.
Anyone can make accusations but it does not mean they are true.

  49. Judy says – reply to this

Two side to every story. You and Dylan are the only two people that knows the truth. My money is on Dylan. I alway new there was a reason Woody that I never paid to go to one of your movies or anything else you ever did. Everyone that I talk to know that you did this horrible think to your daughter. And your wife she was a teenager when you took naked pictures of her. You are a very sick man. And you need help. So my advice to you is get the help you need and tell the truth about what you did to your daughter Dylan.

  50. mp_frenchie says – reply to this

Stop saying Woody married is daughter, it is simply not the truth! Soon-Yi was never Woody's daughter, her father is André Prévin and he had shared custody with Mia.

Woody was Mia`s boyfriend for 12 years, but they never even lived in the same house, so there is a difference between adopting a child, raising, grooming and marrying her and Woody`s story. I mean, its creepy and all, but ppl are changing the fact to amplify the gravity of his behavior to make him look like a sicko.

  51. 51

What is his appeal anyway? Long ass movies about boring people belly aching over random shit nobody IRL cares about.

  52. Kelly says – reply to this

Re: Mooshoo123 – lol that is my point, being attracted to a YOUNG WOMAN is NOT the same thing as being attracted to a CHILD. And Soon-Yi is NOT his child, Mia and Andre Previn adopted her and Previn is her father, so maybe you should get YOUR facts straight. I admit that their relationship is really weird but they have been together 16 years now so obv there is and was no abuse involved in it. People are so judgemental and ignorant, it is ridiculous to try and argue that being attracted to a young woman or a young man is even remotely the same thing as being sexually attracted to a child. The difference being one makes you mentally ill and the other makes you a normal human being. I feel for Dylan (especially considering I have been sexually abused) and maybe he did do it but the facts just don't add up to me. That is MY opinion, you are welcome to yours.

  53. Kelly says – reply to this

Re: Mooshoo123 – Also (I just read your comment again) Woody did NOT start a relationship with Soon-Yi when she was a child. They have both stated that she was about 19 when they started having feelings for each other. There is a HUGE difference between a child and a 19 year old. In Canada (where I'm from/live) you are legally considered an adult at 18. And im pretty sure that in the U.S. it is not illegal for an adult to have sex with someone 18 and over.

The "lie-detector" thing is bullshit. Yes, Allen took it but NO it was NOT official. It was not a lie-detector from the government or anything like that. It was something what Allen took by his own account, performed by people HE employed. Of course the lie-detector situation was completely dismissed in court.

It's funny how Allen keeps on saying that dating (later marrying) Soon-Yi was totally legal and that it was totally acceptable since she wasn't actually her adopted daughter. Like, it's not that people are judging you because they think you did something illegal IT'S BECAUSE YOU DATED THE DAUGHTER OF YOUR FUCKING WIFE (while she was very young). It's just morally stupid. So there.

I think he is a very intelligent man who is capable of writing a a letter which convinces people to believe in his innocence. But personally, i think he is guilty because why would a grown woman would want to talk about all the shit she went through now? She is speaking up finally and I applaud her for being brave and helping all those victims who had suffered and are afraid to speak up. And some people may say "How the fuck is she helping the victims?" Well the answer is simple. She is standing up against one of the most powerful men in the industry. She's basically saying "No matter who this person is, you should speak up".
