American Idol Has Its 1st Openly Gay Contestant In The Show’s History! Meet Emkay Nobilette!

For the first time EVER, American Idol has an openly gay contestant in the Top 30!

20-year-old Emkay Nobilette sang her way into the solo round with a performance of Ed Sheeran’s hit The A-Team.

MK clearly has what it takes to win it all! Even judge Jennifer Lopez admitted that she got goosebumps listening to her sing!

J. Lo described Nobilette’s talent, saying:

"She's like a quiet storm!”

But with her unique look, Jenny, Harry and Keith Urban were wondering if America would vote for her to be their next Idol!

Um…why the heck NOT?!

Lopez told the tomboyish MK:

“You're not the typical American idol.”

Harry Connick Jr. continued, saying:

"'Is that a good thing? Is that a bad thing? Do you fit in, do you not fit in?"

MK fired back, explaining:

"I have my own thoughts on that, too. I'm very obviously gay, and there are always gonna be people in America and everywhere else who are definitely going to hate. But I think that in the last two years there have been a lot of things that have really changed that, and have really made it a positive thing.”

And then, history was made!

Jennifer looked Emkay in the eyes and told her:

"The world is changing, I think. We think that you could be an American Idol!”

MK of course broke down crying! Even Keith was welling up!

What a moment!

Congratz, gurl! We’re SO rooting for you to go all the way to the end and have Ryan Seacrest announcing your name as the Season 13 American Idol!

Ch-ch-check out the historical moment above!

The FIRST openly gay contestant?! Wow. I find that a little surprising. But oh well, congrats to her! She sounds like she has a great voice, so she deserves to be there!

Not the first Perez, once again reporting bullshit for clicks, but she is amazing, sexuality aside. Her voice is a quiet storm.

You are obviously joking 50% of the contestants are openly gay each year!

I don't care if she is gay or not. I am sorry but I don't see why this was so great. It seemed rushed to me like she just wanted to get it over and I di dnot see anything amazing about her voice. Then again, I have not watched it this season as I am pretty tired of the whole idol thing.

    What about Adam lambert?

Jlo is using the Idol gay segment on Idol for her own benefit, trying to promote her show "The Fosters", remember when I said when the verdict was out that when the new judges found out they weren't going to bring up the TV ratings, that Jlo and the other judges were going to find ways to enhance their own career, this is one example, and if you didn't see that in this segment then you have to be just as stupid as the executive producers of Idol for thinking these judges were going to save Idol??????????

AI finally realized that it is important for their gay contestants to be out. That's why I have always preferred The Voice over AI because the former welcomes DIVERSITY by allowing gay contestants to OPENLY gay. Anyway, this is good news. Visibility, inclusion and diversity are all important.

Great that there's a openly gay contestant this year, but I don't think she'll last long. Her voice isn't as strong as some of the other girls. She is unique so she does have that going for but that may only take her so far. Talent wise, she's out beaten by many other girls in the top 15.

OMG I am so sick of these stories. Why should his sexual preference have any sort of reason for a story. Can he sing? I don't care what he does in his private life. Let these stories rest and not make an issue out of who someone likes. xoxo

C'mon, Perez. There have been PLENTY of, in MKs words, "obviously gay" contestants on idol. Just because they don't go out of their way to say it in front of a camera doesn't mean they were trying to hide it. Remember when everyone was acting like Adam Lambert suddenly "came out" in that Rolling Stone interview and Adam had to clarify that the only reason he never mentioned it was because no one asked, not because it was some secret.

Remember when none of us knew that Adam Lambert and Clay Aiken were gay? Yeah, me either.

[Re: Tamtam – Gay or straight, her outfit shows disrespect for a national audience, not casualness. Accept me as I am can be taken too far. Try that in the workplace.
