Ricki Lake making documentary about birth control

Oh whoa, this sounds pretty intense!

Ricki Lake is teaming up with her friend & documentary maker Abby Epstein to battle another issue that is important to them!

Birth control pills!!

The ladies are tackling the possibly unknown side-effects of the pills and what effect it has on women's bodies!

They said:

“In the fifty years since its release, the birth control Pill has become synonymous with women’s liberation and has been thought of as some sort of miracle drug. But now it’s making women sick and so our goal with this film is to wake women up to the unexposed side effects of these powerful medications and the unforeseen consequences of repressing women’s natural cycles.”

WOW! Sounds like this issue is really important to them!

The pair teamed up for the documentary The Business of Being Born in 2008 which scared a BUNCH of people into doing home births as a result.

We wonder if the film will scare everyone off the pill!

We'll just have to wait and see!

Good! It's an issue that people need to know about. When I was on the Pill (several brands), I experienced horrible side-effects the company didn't cover and my doctor was surprised as well.

keep your ignorance to yourself, please. these pills are toxic. they mess with a woman's natural equilibrium and people experience debilitating side effects from them. have you seen the insert that comes with a pack of pills? THAT is what is scary. knowledge is power. good for ricki lake, and shame on pharmaceutical companies that pass off toxic junk as women's empowerment.

Perez, I'm happy that you are posting about this subject and am very much looking forward to the documentary. However, I'm disappointed by your choice of wording.

You said, "The pair teamed up for the documentary The Business of Being Born in 2008 which scared a BUNCH of people into doing home births as a result."

Women and men were not SCARED by this documentary, they were being EDUCATED. There's a huge difference!

Having a natural birth is not scarey process, if you are educated and prepared. We need to stop perpetuating this image that birth and fear go hand in hand.

Re: Michmasterflex – Not true. Copper 7 IUD might work for you. Had no problems here.

Well I am old enough to not have to worry about birth conrol.
However when I was 18 and working with my late aunt, I went to a Dr. in the same building and he gave me birth control pills. I took one and passed out and got fired, after that I went with the IUD.

I take mine so that I can actually have a period so… They can bite me. (Seriously, my record is 6 months w/o and no I wasn't pregnant, hello built up hormones)
I've never had a problem with them personally. My mom on the other hand would get sick as a dog.
Everyone's body is different, so saying it's bad for everyone is just ignorant. Clearly it's good for some.

Started taking BCPs when I was 18 (1976). Took them for 14 years. No problems then or now and I'm 56. Nothing is perfect but they have been around for 50 years for a reason. Properly prescribed to the right patient. They are not for every woman but it's irresponsible to say they are bad or should be taken off the market.

I wonder if this is about getting blood clots because I unfortunately got one and the pill contributed to it. Hope it's about this!

birth control pills helped me to control the horrible symptoms of my pcos. they are not all bad and there are so many of them used for so many different reasons. it's important not to generalize them as all bad. they have also helped several other women control horrible side effects of other hormonal conditions.

Re: DemiLu Nocte – You should speak with a different doctor. You probably have a much more serious problem called Polycystic Ovaries which leads to several other illness such as diabetes and heart health problems. The pill is only covering up a problem and not fixing it.

Re: hannah – There are better medications to take for PCOS. The pill only covers up your symptoms and isn't treating it. Your PCOS will continue to get worse while on the pill. I would ask your doctor about Metformin. It is basically the only drug available that helps with PCOS.
