It started with a whisper…
But it’s grown into a full on declaration from Neon Trees lead singer, Tyler Glenn!
The 30-year-old rocker has come out as gay!
Tyler shared his truth with Rolling Stone magazine in an issue that hits newsstands Friday, telling the music mag:
"I've always felt like I'm an open book, and yet obviously I haven't been completely.”
Well he is now! Tyler held nothing back during his interview, spilling the deets on how hard it was to grow up gay as a Mormon, his early crushes and his first gay experiences!
He shared that he’s known he was gay since he was a little boy but had to keep that part of him a secret for fear that his conservative religion wouldn’t accept him.
"I had my crushes on guys throughout high school, but it was never an overwhelming thing until my twenties. Then I'd be dating girls and in love with my straight friend and it was the worst feeling in the world. We were always taught, and I hate this word, ‘tolerance,” [in Church.] The only time that felt different was when the Prop 8 thing came up.”
Tyler’s referring to when The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spent an estimated $22 million FIGHTING same-sex marriage in California!
But despite his religion, Tyler felt ready to come out to friends, family and the world, due in part to how many before him have done it. He even singled out Michael Sam and admitted how the football player’s bravery helped him come to terms with his own sexuality!
"I really love all of the sports figures that are coming out recently. I appreciated Michael Sam was like, 'I want to be able to go to the movies and hold hands with my boyfriend.' Even hearing him say 'boyfriend,' I was just like, that's cool.”
And now YOU can say the same thing about holding hands at the movies with your boyfriend!
