It's just a bad video, not racist at all. She produced the video just for Japan as she's big there and wanted to create something for that market. Why don't jounalists check their facts anymore?

I think the more pressing questions are "why is Avril Lavigne trying to copy Kesha's music? and Who exactly told her this was a good song.

Its quite easily one of the worst songs I have ever heard. I would seriously rather listen to Lindsey Lohan sing live while Paris Hilton "dj'd" behind her.

That….is how bad this song is.

Avril. Go back to alt rock. No one in the US is going to buy this crappy record outside of 7 year old girls. But if that is your target audience…then Well Done. Well done indeed.

  3. 3

This video is complete garbage and is likely offensive to anybody with ears, let alone eyes.

    4

I thought it was a fun video and not racist at all. I've been listening to her music since I was a teenager. I am 30 now. Go Avril :)

Not racist, just a rip-off. Wannabe Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, but poorly done lmao :( Sorry Avril, just go back to your s8ing lollolol

At least she isn't like everybody else that sings and showing her body of, and making everything about sex. just saying !

    7

    Re: D.
First things first… SHE DID NOT copy Kesha's music. Have you heard at least 150 Kesha songs? You truly don't know Kesha's style. >.< I actually like this music video.

  8. Mike says – reply to this

    8

didn't know promoting a culture is now considered racist… Still hate the song and all but not agreeing with all the criticism…

  9. 9

Re: Mike – OK, I'm japanese. It is not that I don't like Avril, but this video is HORRIBLE. And sorry, but it is NOT "promoting a culture". Her video has NOTHING to do with the "culture" of Japan, or do you think Japanese go bopping around candy stores all day and acting like robots? The song is horrile. It just sounds like an old 45 with scratches on it that keeps skipping words…. I ilke the "old" avril. Not Avril trying to be Katy Perry!

  10. Audrey says – reply to this

    10

How the hell is this "RACIST"? its not like shes using racist slang… jesus, you idiots are just trying to get trouble stirred up…. society these days sickens me.

  11. crystal says – reply to this

    11

It's totally in no way shape or form racist!! A little dumb yes…. I miss the old Avril Lavigne music wise. =( On the bright side she's still super cute though.

  12. 12

It's a bad album, it's a horrible song, it's a very lame video. Instead of reinventing herself she goes backwards and becoming less and less appealing, interesting and/or relevant. Perhaps she should just call it quits once and for all.
There is nothing racist in the video. Only major amounts of Dumb. Which only leads me to believe that this whole thing is a stunt, to make people check out the video because of the non existent "controversy". And it clearly worked cause hey- even I took 30 secs to leaf thru the atrocious clip.

PS- What's up w that 2008 hair cut Ave? (Talking about old news…….)

  13. Oscar says – reply to this

    13

    Re: D.

Because people (the internet) need something to complain about and the fact that Avril is a white woman singing about another culture, they immediately deem her as racist. That's all it is, really. I agree with you, though, it's not a bad song, just an unexpected way to see her in any of her videos. I didn't mind it all that much, it just caught me off guard to see Avril in that kind of environment. I hope that made sense.

  14. Raven says – reply to this

    14

It's not like this is her first video, people whine and bitch if something is the same ie. Nickleback. Apparently everything is the same with them and people hate it. If you want to stay on top you have to do something new, she's only having fun and doing what she likes, honestly if we spent this much time discussing a STAR's choice when it comes to the White House, we might be somewhere.

  15. corey says – reply to this

    15

she's just haveing fum dag on

  16. Ambrose Quinn says – reply to this

    16

I never really thought it was racist, that's a term used so freely nowadays that one has to scrutinise every word coming from ones mouth for fear of being called racist!!

I do however think it is absolute shit, the song, the video, every single little thing about it.
    Terrible, TERRIBLE song!!

  17. ToxicAngel says – reply to this

    17

GET OVER YOURSELF PPL. next things ya know breathing is gonna make ya a racist… She is just haven some fun an it is in NO way being racist.

  18. Avril-4eva says – reply to this

    18

The video seems fun to me but its sorta trashy in a way…. I Love Avril ! I like that shes trying new things and shes not half naked; she is not copying Kesha or Katty Perry …Hello Kitty is suppose to be all pink and girly….. its not her best video…. its definently one of her worst videos but hey shes having fun and that was entertaining….lol I still love Avril!!! :D
She hasn't completely changed either…she still added a bit of her punk rock flair to it with the guitar…and her I dnt give a f*** attitude,….. + she still cute <3 u Avril….FYI this videos not racist at all….well I wouldn't knw am not Japanese…..

    19

    Avril still can't dance

  20. Yeefi says – reply to this

    20

Eh? It might be seen as a bad video- it's not something adult theme or something you need to put much thought into. However, I honestly I love it. It's still

Avril Lavigne. It's still a love song in its own way- to something other than a guy. Japan's cute-side culture.

  21. MMM says – reply to this

    21

I love the song and the video… it's just a bit of fun… why do you all have to be so critical. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. It's not that different to her girly pop stuff like "girlfriend".
Can't stop listening to this! Good work Avril!

  22. tanya says – reply to this

    22

It looks like every other J-POP video, as in Japanese pop. She did do the video in Japan, for her Japanese fans, and her Japanese label.

  23. Samantha Jones says – reply to this

    23

I don't know why they're bashing the dance moves and choreography because that's what KPOP and other asian music videos look like. They have simple dance moves but everything is colourful. It's completely different than North America. The style of clothes she wore are exactly what they wear there, so it's normal.

I loved her skirt and cool glasses!

  24. Samantha Jones says – reply to this

    24

    Re: Pink MafiaRe: Pink Mafia

Who said she was targeting Americans anyway? You guys are really rude (proved by your comment) and very ignorant. Research the Japanese culture before you comment on her video. You'll figure it out.

  25. Lyiah Anne says – reply to this

    25

Not racist at all!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE!!!

  26. S says – reply to this

    26

How is this video NOT racist? She's fetishizing a culture and dumbing down Japan to hello kitty, cupcakes, and sushi…Japan is more than those three things alone. Avril is appropriating a culture and that's why some people see this video as offensive. Also, Gwen Stefani already did these things and I feel like Avril is just copying her.

  27. Zekeal Stun says – reply to this

    27

Avril has been liking the japanese culture just like the rest of us canadians … has anyone else seen japanese pop videos… this is not even bad. I call this normal! when i go to her concert next im cosplaying!!! just to fit in to the song WOOOT

  28. Zekeal Stun says – reply to this

    28

    Re: S

She is from canada all we see is the anime, manga, conventions and the food when i think japanese i want sushi and hello kitty cupcakes topped with Pocky … are you from japan ? are you from canada? no then shut it please Warmly

  29. Anna says – reply to this

    29

I like it. I think it is cute. Hello Kitty is great.

  30. Ashley Holloway says – reply to this

    30

I really do not think this was racist, my opinion this is Avril Lavigne. I mean she is a singer who has directors and signs contracts for these people. It is more like a job, whatever your boss ask for you do. So she signed a contract with a director and has to perform like he/she wants her too, just like Miley Cyrus. All this talk about her or anyone is bull snap unless you know the real deal and know their situation, you should not judge or criticize anyone.

  31. Emily says – reply to this

    31

OMG!!! Who ever calls this racist are racist and ignorant… She is simply taking part of Japanese pop culture. She is super popular over there, it's only natural to dedicate one of her songs to that fanbase.

  32. 32

The song is awful but I see no racism! People need to stop being offended at every stinking thing they see that they don't like!

  33. Bethany says – reply to this

    33

I don't see how Avril using Japanese culture for her video is any different than Gwen Stefani using the same culture in all of her Harajuku Girls stuff. Yes, the video is pretty bad by American standards, but not all countries like the same kinds of videos… this may actually be something that another culture likes. Americans aren't the only culture out there. (I know, WHAT???)

  34. Kity says – reply to this

    34

Literally the WORST thing I've watched since Rebecca Black's, "Friday" music video.

  35. unknownname says – reply to this

    35

they say this video is too lazy and she is not doing anything productive there.it's her choice.if you like more the videos of different singers that dance with naked ass and naked girls around, anything like porn and striptease it's your choice.she is better than this, and her video is amazingly happy and positive.just fuck you haters ;) )

  36. Renee says – reply to this

    36

I dont think the video is racist to be honest just stereotypical which can be just as harmful but not malicious… and idk but i dont remember anyone having a problem with gwen stefani and her gang of harajuki barbie's back in the day…

  37. Kitsune says – reply to this

    37

Ummm…. Seriously? This video was obviously created for the modern Japanese culture pop kids. Why would a Japanese company do otherwise? It's easy for the Japanese kids to karaoke to and a simple beat they can dance to. Karaoke is where it's at in Japan and it can easily reach popularity if it's catchy and fun to do for them. Bigots, such as these American Journorlists, wouldn't understand because "the world revolves around America". STFU!

  38. john blue says – reply to this

    38

screw all the hater avril is still a very good singer and its not racist so you haters just go somewhere else and do something better with you life beside hating on avril lol

  39. Harpy D. says – reply to this

    39

Stop bitching its for a different demographic in a different country and its her music let her do what she thinks is fun. that music style is very Japan and that's who she put it out for sorry but she's not going to making every song to your liking its not all about you!

  40. Amber says – reply to this

    40

    DaF#@%?

I mean, I haven't liked Avril since she went pop but still, this is a new low….
Hey hey you you I don't like your music, no way no way you need a new genre, hey hey you you go back to alt rock.
The only way this is raciest is because Japanese people will not want this song to have anything to do with their culture!!!

  41. sky says – reply to this

    41

ok so I don't understand how ya'll can say this is racist?! its not racist at all. shes just having fun in her video like she always does. so ya'll gotta back off of Avril. she didn't do a thing wrong.

  42. Itachi says – reply to this

although I still don't see anything wrong with it other than it's not what we are used to seeing from her, but strangely catchy O.o

you say you're japanese so let us know :P

  44. Candice says – reply to this

    44

What Time Magazine and Billboard said were not saying that her video was racist, they were simply bashing her. I actually like the song, but the video really isn't that good, I'll admit. However, that doesn't mean I'm going to start bashing one of my favorite artists. Yes we all know her as the skater girl and pop/punk princess who is the "Joan Jett of our generation," but she's allowed to step out and try other things. Don't we all do that at some point in our lives anyway? Just try something different?

  45. Clayton Vehorn says – reply to this

    45

    Artistically, it's horrifically terrible.
But if she was trying to awkwardly attract me to her sexually, she achieved that in spades.
And I'm pretty sure that's all that matters in Japanese pop culture, so yea. She wins this round.
    I'll be back when my pants stop being so tight. ;-;

i don't see anything wrong about the video or even in the song…actually, after i saw her sung the "hello kitty " in her concert, i am now crazy about this song…and i used to sing this song at the karaoke bar… it's so cool and i really love it…

    51

This is the problem with American liberals. They'd like multiculturalism, they just don't like people being multicultural. If you do your appropriating their culture. Even though during the making of her music video she was literally the only non-Japanese person in the room.

Oh yeah and if you're Japanese-American stop acting like you know Japanese culture

  52. Greg says – reply to this

    52

Re: GabbyJohnson – you should stay away from Japan then because clearly your intolerant of their culture. I'm assuming you vote Democrat, right. Acting with 100% certainty when you're really have no idea what you're talking about

  53. Allison says – reply to this

This song is not racist at all. In fact, it's not that bad. I just find the video a bit weird because of her obsession over something that is inappropriate for her age.

Re: kabuki girl – your Japanese congratulations, I'm Scottish, I don't know how to make haggis bitch.

And you clearly don't understand the youth in Japan, they fucking insane compared ours, which is a good thing because they're not shy about being themselves. Unlike our culture which tries to make people feel like they need to be the same while the same time promoting individuality. it's retarded. You can be you but the minute you step on a line with our beliefs were going to shame you. I guarantee you Avril Lavigne voted for Obama. What a racist.

And since your Japanese I'm assuming you're well accustomed to tentacle porn

  57. Greg says – reply to this

    57

Is it me or is it like ever since Obama was elected Liberals of been acting like the reverend from Footloose?

You can't do this, you can't do that this hurts these people, that hurts those people. When they used to just say fuck those people, let me be me. You better stay in line or the PC police are going to destroy you without any facts.

I feel like everyone who's criticizing Avrile Levine would go to Japan and act as if all the Japanese people hated Japanese people

I'm a fan of Avril since the first hour really and I think those haters can just sod off.
For the people yelling they want the old Avril back and such, yall didnt change somethings in your lifes the last 14 years?
People go trough stages in life, be prepared that any person you like will do the same, grow with them not against them!
I love everything Avril does, period, she is one of the few artists you never seen in the news on a negative note or doing bad things.
    Rock on Avril. LBS! <3

Do you think Avril Lavigne's "Hello Kitty" music video is a racist?
–i don't think so. the music video is so kawaii. why is everyone trashing her like damn.. for me avril is so damn awesome to dare to make such kawaii music video. :3 :3 ur just disappointed because the music video is so very different than what she usually do (e.g. sk8r boi, complicated, here's to never growing up,etc.). in fact the song is so catchy ^^ Avril Lavigne: U ROCK \m/
    #meowk #AvrilForever

  60. Cayla says – reply to this

    60

I agree it is a bad song but seriously this is what J-pop is like. Very common in Japan. Americans just have different tastes and frankly everyone needs to leave Avril alone. She is still a great artist and person. So back off she made one bad song.

  61. BonnieDiane says – reply to this

    61

Before u judge make sure ur perfect first. No one has the right slam this video for being racist in the first place~! It's a great song and the video WAS lacking, but I love it to death and agree that this is very culturally inspired by japan. Artist grow and their music will change with them as they grow and some even cover a wide range of song styles, not to be held down a specific style. Each time Avril releases a album it's new, original, and not like the pervious ones she has already released. Also, why is it so wrong for the video to b leaning toward a specific cultural? People who deem this video as racist should really step back and look at their selves first and ask themselves "Why do I think this is racist after only watching it once?"

  62. James says – reply to this

    62

I don't really get all the backlash this video is getting. A. Its not racist (is everything racist these days) and B. It's no worse than any other video or song these days e.g. Katy Perry. The whole situation over this video is stupid.

  63. Jax says – reply to this

    63

How is this any different from what Gwen Stefani did when she went solo. It's just as out there as that. It's like a Katy Pery, Ke$ha, Gwen Stefani and Niki Minage… something. I think it's weird, it's fun, and it's different. Katy Perry wore cupcakes on her tits for christ sake. So not everyone likes it. SO WHAT?!! SHIT crucify someone for wanting to step a little out of their comfort zone for once!! None of those other women were neither hurt nor cared about it, so why should she. I have been an avid Avril follower since she was on stage with Shania Twain. Give her a break and loosen your panties. Avril, you go girl for doing something fun and out of the box. Even if NO ONE likes it. I give you mad props for doing something for you!!!

  67. Miyu says – reply to this

    67

Re: Zekeal Stun – For her claiming to spend half her time in Japan, she obviously just stays in Harajuku. This is not a proper way to promote Japanese culture because it is so much more than this. Also, if you've read her other interviews she admits that it is about Hello Kitty, but it also suppose to be flirty and sexual…she just sexualized what is suppose to be a child's toys. I'm not sure what Japanese music videos you've seen, and maybe you're referring to the rock genre than you are the pop but even Visual Kei is not as popular in Japan as people assume. Yes, in other countries Manga, Anime, etc. are shown in that country, which I can understand if someone is not fully aware of a culture because of that, but she states she spends HALF HER TIME in Japan. Also I asked my Japanese teacher, and my mother about her intro and they both said it literally means "Everyone" "Awesome" "Thank you".

  68. Miyu says – reply to this

    68

I wouldn't say it's racist, but a very misguidance of a culture as a whole. As I stated in a previous comment for someone who spends half their time in Japan, she must not leave Harajuku, because this is just highlighting this subculture. I have no issues with how she looks, but the video is quite awful. Also just because she works with a Japanese label, producer etc. isn't a good way to defend herself because she is just making money for them.

  69. Rigel says – reply to this

    69

I don't see anything wrong with the video. I believe she's just matching the character of Hello Kitty, and again, that's not bad. There's nothing even racist. Some people are just over thinking or over reacting.

  70. Dru in Roc says – reply to this

    70

Seriously? People are saying "Bring back the old Avril "? Where the hell were all these people when her last 3 singles went completely under the radar! Finally Avril gets noticed in the US and people are getting their panties in a bunch! #wahwah

  71. shaysflyin says – reply to this

    71

Before people try to label something as "racist", they should actually get to know the culture. This looks like any number of other Japanese produced music videos I've seen, and it's actually a pretty good song compared to other J-pop I own. It's rediculous that rather than encouraging the blending of cultures, the media is labeling this as racist. Yeesh.

  72. Nomad says – reply to this

Much about nothing. It's marketable to the asian nations, in fact they'll love it!

  74. BlackStar says – reply to this

    74

Probably, those haters don't know avril much. Lets say the meaning of this is horrible. But be sure to think clearly about the real meaning of RACIST :D Better think before commenting. Makes me think that that there is no racist at all in this video. Those who are saying that is racist shows you as a more horrible person :) )

i love Japanese staff and i think this song is cute , I love it , call me stupid or A BAKA but i love it and she was having fun doing nothing wrong , maybe like me she loves Japanese staff and she would to do something Japanese style , i think ppl forget how strange sometimes are the Japanese video's for a song and she did the same thought its not fully Japanese its still Japanese style video ^_^ which i love , she is just experiencing her love for japan and her OTAKU side . Remember she sang a song for the film of ONE PIECE that is a famous MANGA AND ANIME IN JAPAN. I think ppl should not judge a video ,before looking at all the point of view to it . And i think ppl saying staff like that are the racist , so what you don't like it ,ITS OK SHE DO A BETTER ONE NEXT TIME FOR YOU BUT FOR ME SHE IS TRYING SOMETHING NEW EXPERIMENTING WITH NEW TECHNICS AND EVEN SHOWING HER LOVE BEGIN A OTAKU . so ME LIKE HER I LOVE THIS SONG

  76. Christine says – reply to this

    76

She didn't change. Sthe grew up. And so everybody does. This isn't racist WTH?! She LOVES Japan, why would she make a racist video?

  77. Tom Rochelle says – reply to this

    77

I've been a huge Avril fan for over ten years and this is typical high energy video work by Avril. The people who claim that the video is racist have no credibility and are ignorant of the special relationship that Avril has with her fans in Japan. They totally love her and she loves them right back. I can hear all the Japanese artists who worked on this video with her, when told some in the US think the video is racist, going, "What? Come again?"

  78. Dagmar says – reply to this

    78

Not racist, but my god she looks like a Japan obsessed emo kid… Can't she make a music video for her Japanese fans where she doesn't look like a twelve year old that still needs to learn how to dress?

  79. Ghosti says – reply to this

    79

I love how she makes ONE video like this and everyone is saying she is 'failing at reinventing herself'. She isn't reinventing anything all her other song are just like her old self an style, people need to focus on more important stuff and stop throwing the word 'racist' at everything. And while it may not depict Japan accurately its a song called hello kitty for cripes sake its going to be about 'kawaii' shit not deep and meaningful sunsets.

  80. Larry K. says – reply to this

    80

Racist ? That Doesn't even deserve a comment. Bad video ?? Well, the easiest way to decide that, is to watch the sales. I bet she makes more on this one song, than pretty much ANY of you will make in the next 5 years..

  81. burst bubble says – reply to this

    81

Re: my_shit_dont_stink – you know the funny thing is how do you know if her album is bad if you haven't listened to it implying you listened to her whole album unless you just didn't like the first two songs and decided 'oh the rest must be bad too' so you must have liked some songs. Any way why do you even need to make stupid comments like that? is it because you like to bring people down!? Or is it because you think people actually care about what you say? Either way it's just sick. How would you feel if someone insulted something you were proud of, Avril was proud of that video she made comments everyday so we knew when the video would be released

  82. Keri says – reply to this

    82

I think it's super cute, but by heck it's an awful song! If she just stuck to her original rock backing instead of the crappy synthetic dance backing then it would be great. Not at all racist though… There's a huge Kawaii following in Japan and I'm sure they loved the video.

This isn't racist at all. These days people find issues to moan about. If you think this is racist, why are other cultures that copy typical white teenage culture behaviour not called racist?
Wow, people really have nothing to do than think up sh*t to complain about.

Leave it to the Americans to feel offended for the Asians by a video produced by Asians. Dear, Billboard, watch some J-pop videos first then re-review Hello Kitty.

She's been terrible since day one. I'm still not convinced that she knows how to play guitar. She is definitely offensive. To all senses.

It may not be racist, but it sure is EMBARRASSING. It's boring, weird, childish, cheap, and the lip syncing is off. Very disappointed.

I voted for 'what the hell happened to her'….but we all know what happened to her — Chad Kroger happened to her. Her good taste and sense went out the window when she decide it was a good idea to date, then marry, that douche.

not even close to racist. what about when gwen Stephanie did that shit.

absolutely not racist… if you are a fan of girls generation or Miss A… none of this would seem out of the ordinary… the sad part is that people thing she is racist because she enjoys the culture and is white… that is where the real problem is. i find this cute and catchy… i am a big fan of K-pop and Japanese pop culture as well.
