Zac Efron Opens Up About His Addictive Inner Demons & Staying Sober: "It's A Never-Ending Struggle"

zac efron talks candidly rehab

Zac Efron is doing so much better these days!!

So that's why he felt comfortable enough to detail his private struggle with alcohol and drugs in the May 9 issue of The Hollywood Reporter!

The adorable actor has admitted he's grateful for all the opportunity he's been given so far—but it doesn't come without challenges or temptations:

"No matter who you are, you face challenges growing up. You go with your things, you learn, you have to. It's impossible to lead an honest and fulfilling life as a man and not make mistakes and 'fess up to them when you need to. But it's especially humiliating when they happen to be so public and so scrutinized. When you have success young, and you accept the good things, you have to accept all of it. You have to accept the moments of glory but also a great responsibility. And that responsibility, to some degree, involves being a role model. At the same time, I'm a human being, and I've made a lot of mistakes. I've learned from each one."

He went on to detail his addiction, proving it went much deeper than just a surface struggle:

"I was drinking a lot, way too much. It's never one specific thing. I mean, you're in your 20s, single, going through life in Hollywood, you know? Everything is thrown at you. I wouldn't take anything back; I needed to learn everything I did. But it was an interesting journey, to say the least."

He blamed his overwhelming workload for his unhappiness, which slowly caused him to look for an escape in drugs and alcohol:

"There was something lacking, some sort of hole that I couldn't really fill up. [Work] started to become the reason to go anywhere, the reason to talk to anybody. The phone calls I received were regarding [work], the ones I wanted to make were regarding scripts or to producers. Slowly but surely, I was no longer living in my house. It was just hotel to hotel. So my hobbies went out the window. I had done films back-to-back-to-back. I was burnt out. I was just so deep into my work, it was really the only thing I had. I clung to it in a way that became a little bit destructive."

After going to rehab, getting on a normal schedule with exercise and sleep—Zac feels like a new man, and we're so happy he does!

Here's to a long and sexy career for our fav talented man candy!

I am really curious to know why Zac ever tried drugs in the first place. No hate or judgement. I am just always very fascinated by people who seem to have their heads on straight yet go the drug route even when they know what it could possibly lead to. I think out of all of the people I have read about in the industry who have become drug addicts, I am most surprised about Zac Efron. Still shocked by this.

Ok, never mind, I didn't read all of it before posting my previous reply. I guess one never really understands unless they are famous. The pressures of Hollywood got to be too much for him. :( Hopefully he stays clean. Wish him the best..

Good for Zak, he seems like an honest, caring human being. I too was shocked about him, and Phillip Senior Hoffman, both actors I really like. I hope Zak stays sober and keeps his shit together.

At the end of the day, work, money and all the rest of it doesn't matter, unless you're grounded and believe in yourself, and have people you love and who love you in your life. And it doesn't matter if you are famous or not. Being famous, I would think, would be a double edged sword. You have the money and the adoration, but when you screw up you get the scrutiny and those waiting for you to fail.

Some of the comments here are disgusting, by the way. That's the bad edge of the sword, I guess.

Good luck, Zak! Ignore the haters and live your life to the fullest.
