Legendary Feminist Slams Beyoncé & Calls Her A Terrorist! But Not So Fast…

beyonce anti feminist terrorist

Did she learn NOTHING from Saturday Night Live's Beygency?!

MaJOR feminist icon bell hooks just Bill O'Reilly-style slammed Beyoncé during a conversation this week with transgender advocate Janet Mock at The New School in Manhattan.

During the talk, Janet offered her own voluntary praise of Bey, saying that Destiny's Child was a huge inspiration amidst a sea of blonde pop stars…

But bell fired back, explaining that she's worried about the singer's influence on young females:

"[There is] a part of Beyoncé that is anti-feminist—that is a terrorist, especially in terms of the impact on young girls."

An anti-femme terrorist!?

That's way harsh, considering feminism is most of what she's preaching on her latest album, especially in ***Flawless where she borrows sound clips from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's powerful TED talk.

The activist went on further, revealing that she believes the public wouldn't be so interested in Queen Bey if she wasn't so wealthy:

"Let's say if Beyoncé was a homeless woman who looked the same way, or a poor, down and out woman who looked the same way, would people be enchanted by her? Or is it the combination of all of those things that are at the heart of imperialist, white supremacist, capitalist patriarchy?"

Let US just say that Beyoncé's talent is indescribable, and she'd probably be plucked from her homelessness and given a record deal because she's so ferocious!

And as a clear Yoncé hater, one should probably not get caught dancing to the performer's hits, right?! Because that would make her argument null and void, correct?!

After cleverly searching the interwebs, we've caught the feminist red handed. You LOVE Beyoncé too — so don't disrespect the queen!

Having an opinion that isn't exactly what one wants to hear doesn't make them a hater. No one is saying that Beyonce isn't a talented singer and performer, but she has a point. There are a lot of lovely young women who can sing, and have nothing, and the world isn't embracing them. Just like most celebrities, we over-pay this one while so many go hungry, when there is plenty of deserving talent that would sing songs that someone else wrote for much less money. We project royalty status on the lucky few who make it to fame, and it's exactly because of the money, the glamour, and the image. It rarely has much to do with talent, as long as they look like someone most wish they could be.

Beyonce my recite the occasional girl-power message written by her publicists, but that doesn't make up for her constant portrayal as a sex object. She is a feminist's worst nightmare.

  3. 3

    She has a point.

I dont think she is anti- feminist…but she does go overboard some times.. with her choice of wardrobe…and the overly sexual references she makes in her craft… the big issue with that is that she is about the only artist out there who doesn't need these "effects"…she could literally wear her Pjs with no makeup and sing on stage …and still be entertaining

  5. 5

Beyonce is one of those fake blonde pop stars wtf are they talking about? She is one of the most race trading people I have ever seen in our day and age.

  6. 6

Beyonce is anti-feminist but pro beyonce and she sucks on top of that.

  7. 7

Beyonce would never be plucked from the streets her whole career is based on bribes and business that has nothing to do with talent and if you don't know that as a celebrity blogger then you are dumb as hell.

TBH i think Beyonce totally contradicts herself in little ways

she does, says and 'writes' things that people want to hear and expect from her

and the Flawless song the only thing that makes it a feminist song IS the clips from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's then shes telling us to bow down bitches and the gloats about what she has and what most of us dont have

i think that song is good and i jam to it but

We had a problem defining feminism until it became clearly popular, but we are again facing a wrong definition of the term. While being a feminist does mean fighting for equal rights between men and women, that does not mean a woman needs to be less of a lady. She can be a boss and still pole-dance for her husband at home. THAT is what Beyonce is talking about and I believe she does not contradict herself in any way.

  11. 11

Isnt Beyonce blonde on many occasions…when people say Beyonce is an inspiration, look where its coming from…who cares. Its just scary when "these" type of people vote for president.

She is trying to advance herself by putting Beyonce down. Lots of people do stuff like that that but it's a deplorable practice.

Not a Beyonce fan. But she wasn't born wealthy and she did work for her money. Holding it against her that she is rich is very unfair and pure jealousy.

Beyonce has a right to live her life the way she want to, she doesn't have to live like some feminist wants her to. Some people just take too much for granted and expect everyone to do things their way.
    NOT gonna happen.

  15. 15

Re: Elle – Bullshit. She is simply pointing out that while Beyonce may say the right words now and then, her overall image is extremely harmful to young girls. Our kids listen to rap music that overwhelmingly considers women to be b*tches and h*s, and people like Beyonce blatantly sell sex. The message to young girls is that if you are not overtly sexy you are nothing. And for Beyonce to call her sexy behaviour empowering is a total lie - it is simply sales, and what she is selling is sex.

The thing I really like about Bey and her husband is that they try very hard not to seem arrogant about their wealth.
We all know tey are rich but they actually downplay it as much as possible.
Remember how she refused to flaunt her ring and how very low-key but elegant their wedding was?
I respect their tact and class.
They are light years above Kim and the fool who is marrying her, totally in a different league.

Re: rosebud99 – Do you cuss around your kids like that? Sex is a pleasurable part of life which God gave to us and wants us to enjoy. Kids need to know that and grow up with a healthy attitude about life and all its fulfillment.

  18. 18

Re: Bob – Seeing women turn themselves into sex OBJECTS does not give kids a healthy attitude about sex.

shes been in the game since she was a damn teenager, so for her to be in her 30s, and barely allowing her music to be more racy is her own right.
Rihanna comes out with rude boy at 21 and its cool with everyone…Beyonce comes out with partition at 32 and its a shit storm. Can the girl live?

    28

Whoa. Oxford defines 'terrorist' as 'a person who uses violence and intimidation in an attempt to achieve political aims.' Beyonce is clearly not doing this by deciding to infuse some mature sexuality into her creativity now that she's over 30. Bell has done reams of interesting and thoughtful work, but mislabeling Mrs. Carter a 'terrorist' could be interpreted as a form of social intimidation to force Bey back into her innocent youth performer box. People may or may not like Bey's image change (I had trouble with it myself) but a terrorist she's NOT.

Re: rosebud99 – you Mean You Just Found Out ?

  33. 33

Ugh, I hate hate hate when a woman attacks another woman because their ideal of feminism might be different. Hate. If women really want to change things, we can't be attacking each other any time someone does something that we don't see as proper, that will get us no where.

There is nothing wrong with a woman using her sexuality, nothing. Yes, Beyonce makes sexy videos and wears skimpy clothing…yes, she's doing it to sell records…but I have always gotten the impression from her that she doesn't do anything she doesn't want to. She's not being controlled by men telling her to take off her clothes, she's choosing to because she's comfortable with her sexuality and knows how to use it to her advantage. She also knows WHEN to use it and never shows up to events with her nipples or vajayjay hanging out. Is she a great role model for young girls? No probably not…but compared to half the other pop artists out there, I'd much rather my daughter listen and watch Beyonce than Rhianna or Miley Cyrus. Her music overall has an awesome message and to me that means a lot more than what's she wearing.

  34. 34

Re: @v@ – Calling her a terrorist is a stretch, but there is no doubt that the objectification of women in music does promote violence against women. And keeping women down is political. It may not be Beyonce's aim - she is simply trying (and succeeding) to stay current, but overall, the impact today's media has on women, is terrorism.

Beyoncé did grow up rich…other poster person, wealthy Texan. My cousin went to high school with her.

  37. @v@ says – reply to this

    37

Re: rosebud99 – True enough. She doesn't meet the definition of 'terrorist' and I feel is a pointed misuse of the word. The alphabet guys wouldn't be breaking down her door over what she's up to. Overt sexuality could be labelled as in poor taste, or poor example for young black women, or misguided, or even intentional; but she isn't a terrorist. The music industry has seemingly rewarded artists who remake themselves and evolve (Madonna et al), and if you look at what they're doing these days to sell records, am not surprised she jumped on or whatever. Who doesn't want to get with the times and try to revive and extend their career. It's like the bigger the drama and hype (even if it's negative), the more buzz one gets. Yet Buble doesn't peel to sell tunes…but comparatively, Bey isn't the worst by any stretch. It's marketing, such as it is. I wish it would swing the other way tho.

  38. 38

Re: @v@ – You're right, Beyonce is far from the worst. There are some rap songs that degrade women horribly. If they treated any other group they way they treat women it would be a hate crime, but because it is women there is not outrage at all.

    39

I think that comment is just a little ridiculous. If there has to be a Beyonce, and clearly there does, in any culture except the most repressive cultures there are sexual representatives, then by God these women should be throwing a party that the woman calls herself a feminist. Would they rather she not. I think it is incredibly sad, and patriarchal, for them to think for one moment that in a sexually libertine cultures women would not own and exploit their own sexuality. In a liberated culture sexuality will be own and flaunted by women, historically this is found in every ancient culture. Either women will exploit their own sexuality (watch sexual display behaviors of female animals in the wild) or it will be owned, controlled, and exploited BY MEN, FOR THE PURPOSE OF MEN. I love bell hooks but I think her comments are incredibly short-sighted and unrealistic.

Re: rosebud99 – no, a feminists worst nightmare is a mullah calling for the beheading or stoning of women who exercise freedom and civil rights, or a member of boko haram kidnapping schoolgirls and raping them. THAT is a feminists worst nightmare and should be everyone's. Beyonce is a pop singer, and her calling herself feminist is an incredibly strong, powerful and brave statement that feminists should embrace.

  41. 41

Re: alana – I hear what you are saying about the blatant atrocities against women, and how that really is a nightmare. But Beyonce's brand of so-called feminism is so insidious and far reaching, gently (or not so gently) pushing girls in a direction that is designed simply to please men. I see nothing strong, powerful or brave in Beyonce's statements - what I see is a calculated machine selling what people what to hear. I refuse to buy into her manufactured image.

You can like someone's song, and still think their personality and character is shit. Case in point: Kanye. A lot of people can dance to his songs, or they love the beat, or maybe they even like some of the lyrics, but as a person, he's an asshole. So, what the hell does her dancing to one of Beyonce's songs prove?

  49. 49

uhm beyonce worked hard for her wealth! and she's a sexual being, as are the rest of the billions of people on this earth. so because she's a mother and an "example" to young girls she's not allowed to be proud of her sexuality? and when she does show her sexual side shes with her husband!! and its performing… on a grown up stage!! get over it!

Re: rosebud99 – bullshit you dumbass, beyonce doesn't sell sex, she has a 15 yrs career of her preaching about loving yourself and working hard. She's a beautiful woman who is not afraid to show her body, why is that selling sex? She is a grown woman and should be able to do whatever she wants. She IS a feminist whether if you like it or not. to call her a terrorist and an anti feminist just because you see her body and she talks about sex is RIDICULOUS! especially when beyonces whole message is embracing all aspects of yourself, Men can be sexual and women can't. So she's pushing the boundary on that. Judging her the way the world is doing nothing but further proving BEYONCES point. she's reinventing what feminism is
