Rupaul Thinks The Word 'Tranny' Isn't Offensive! What Do You Think?!

Rupaul isn't bothered by the use of the word "tranny?" Inneresting…

While on Marc Maron's WTF podcast, Rupaul gave an argument against the offensiveness of the term "tranny," and in doing so, delivered an incredible and uplifting speech about being whoever you want to be, doing whatever you want, and not looking for happiness in the response of other people:

"Does the word ‘tranny’ bother me? No. I love the word ‘tranny.’…It’s not the transexual community who’s saying that. These are fringe people who are looking for storylines to strengthen their identity as victims. That is what we are dealing with. It’s not the trans community. ‘Cause most people who are trans have been through hell and high water… But some people haven’t and they’ve used their victimhood to create a situation where, ‘No! You look at me! I want you to see me the way you’re supposed to see me!’ You know, if your idea of happiness has to do with someone else changing what they say, what they do, you are in for a fucking hard-ass road… I dance to the beat of a different drummer. I believe everybody — you can be whatever the hell you wanna be, I ain’t stopping you. But don’t you dare tell me what I can do or what I can’t — say or can’t do. It’s just words, like, ‘Yeah, you hurt me!’ Bitch, you need to get stronger. If you’re upset by something I said you have bigger problems than you think.”

Rupaul is so right. Words meant to hurt you or insult you are only as powerful and effective as you yourself make them.

Be who are you are, do what you want, and never make your own internal happiness based on the external response from others.

But what do you guys think about Rupaul's stance on the word "tranny"?

Do you agree with Rupaul?

no, the term is not offensive. they recently made jerry springer stop using the term. excuse me for using the short form of a word? my god, with all of the abbreviations and acronyms out there, you would think THIS would not be an issue.

The term is offensive as it is used to put down trans people. Rupaul is not transgender , he is a drag queen, so of course he wont be personally offended by a term that is not used against him. That's like saying gay people should get over being called the F word or Black people should get over being called the N word. Cis, straight and/or white people want to say whatever they want no matter who it offends so they call others sensitive in order to cover their prejudice. Rupaul does not speak for the transgender community.

Re: StephanieJ – oh yes straight white people are the worst….BY ABBREVIATING A WORD. it is nothing like calling a black person the n word. it is a SHORT FORM. my god gay ppl take everything way to seriously.

Re: opinion – It's not simply an abbreviation. It is used as a tool to dehumanize transpeople and it is often a word they are called before they are attacked/raped/murdered. "gay ppl take everything way to seriously." Being transgender has nothing to do with being gay. That just shows me that you're ignorant.

Funny, because the only time I ever hear the word "tranny" used is from my friends who are, guess what? Trannies.

I say remove the transsexuals from the whole LGBT movement altogether. A lot of them don't associate themselves as being homosexual, let alone associate themselves WITH homosexuals.

If the tranny community (yeah, I said it) are so offended by the word, why don't they go after the porn industry that exploits them? Oh, because RuPaul is much more of an easy target, and they don't want to admit that some trannies are willing participants in their own exploitation. And if we want to argue about words, I find the term "cis-gender" just as appalling as the transgenders find the word "tranny" offensive. The term has only been in use for a quarter of a century, and is nothing but a guilt-inducing tactic used by pseudo-sociologists who want to marginalize people who are happy the way they were born.

To quote Stephen Fry, "It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more… than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what."

"Tranny began as a uniting term amongst ourselves. Of course it’s going to be picked up and used as a denigrating term by mean people in the world. But even if we manage to get them to stop saying tranny like a thrown rock, mean people will come up with another word to wound us with. So, let’s get back to using tranny as a uniting term amongst ourselves."
