Barbra Streisand Releases Statement On "Distasteful" Gay Sex Scandal, But Doesn't Apologize To LGBT Community!

barbra streisand statement distasteful gay sex scandal larry kramer the normal heart lgbt community

Talk about a Guilt Trip!

Screen, stage, & song legend Barbra Streisand found herself in an unusual place recently — at odds with the LGBT community which usually adores her. Playwright Larry Kramer accused her of keeping the cinematic rights to his work, The Normal Heart, under lock and key for totally nefarious reasons!

He alleged that she wouldn't allow a cinematic adaptation of his play to be made because she didn't care to see a "distasteful" love scene play between members of the same sex!

Yelpin' Yentils, we hope that's not true!

Well, the 72-year-old superstar finally felt the need to make a statement and clarify her position, but we're not positive it really helped!

She confessed:

"When I fell in love with Larry's Kramer's play, "The Normal Heart," in 1986, I wanted to promote the idea of everyone's right to love. Gay or straight! The gay community was suffering. A new disease was rearing its ugly head and no one was listening…. Larry was at the forefront of this battle and God love him, he's still fighting. But there's no need to fight me by misrepresenting my feelings…. As a filmmaker I have always looked for new and exciting ways to do love scenes. It's a matter of taste, whether they're about heterosexuals or homosexuals. I was trying to reach a large audience and I wanted them to want these two men to get married. We've come a long way since then-gay marriage is now legal in 17 states, but there are still 33 more to go…"

Wow. We think her fans just wanted an apology, but instead she reminisced about The Way We Were! It almost sounds like Babs is saying she doesn't want to show LGBT love on screen because 33 states aren't ready and willing to see those images and hear that story.

We disagree!! We think the people are ready for same-sex love scenes! They'll see it on screen and realize it's just two human expressing their intimacy.

Do you think Barbra just dug herself into an even deeper hole??

Just when I think Perez has reached the zenith of stupid…he comes along and proves he can't even read.

Your interpretation of Barbra's comments have nothing to do with the actual swords of here statement. She's right it was a different time, and getting the Normal Heart to the big screen may not have been possible, there is nothing to apologize for p, except in your addled mind.

What does she have to apologize for? I didn't hear her say that "distasteful love scene play between members of the same sex" that's just hear say, maybe that's how he took it, doesn't mean that's what she said. I think you're being overly sensitive on this one!

I'm sure a lot of gays find heterosexual sex distasteful. No biggie. If it is not what you are into, you find it distasteful. It doesn't mean that you have anything against the people doing it, it just means it does not appeal to you.

She has a gay son and even she said she had a hard time dealing with that initially (see it's okay for liberals to struggle but if a conservative said that, they'd be hung). I'm not sure this whole thing is even really a story, except for the word gay. Every single day we are bombarded with some "gay" story. Who cares? I don't want to hear about anyone's sexual preference. Lame!

  6. 6

Ha ha ha ha ha! The gays made her rich and she couldn't give a rat's ass about you. It will be interesting to see if the gays boycott her for not apologizing.

and seeing this homely old hag with her legs in the air would be better? never liked her, always thought she was over rated and full of herself. guess I was right.

Apologize for what???? Gays can be so bitchy sometimes.

Ag! You gays love being the victim in everyting. The problem with you is that you can put your opinion out there about straight people but straight people can't say shit about you. Yes! Gay sex is very disturbing and distasteful. I really don't understand why you expect Barbara to apologise for speaking her mind.

Why would you intentionally leave the last sentence off? "I’m just glad that a large audience will finally get to see this story. It's an historical document now."

    Manufactured drama, intentional editing.

That is not true Perez!!! Her very own son is gay, and she is his biggest fan!!!

I've read, and re-read this and I agree… Barbara's words made sense to me. If anything, she was Intentionally pointing out that that for her it doesn't matter if it's a love scene between heterosexuals or homosexuals.

"As a filmmaker I have always looked for new and exciting ways to do love scenes. It's a matter of taste, whether they're about heterosexuals or homosexuals."

I like you Perez, and have been reading your articles for a while now, but I think you missed it on this one. As I read her actual words (and before I read the comments) I didn't see anything that was offensive to me (hell, she was even seemed to be considerate of Larry Kramer).

I think that maybe you owe Babs an apology, instead.

  13. 13

Once AGAIN, Babs should just shut up if she can't admit that she was/is OBVIOUSLY wrong. Equality doesn't have an asterix for love scenes. A movie about gays in love should have love scenes between gays just like a movie about straight people in love should have love scenes between straights. #DUH

Re: Nell – Uh. Duh. For keeping the film locked up because of her homophobic fears about gay love scenes being included in the movie.

OH FOR F@*KS SAKE, I'VE HAD PLENTY OF GAY SEX AND MUCH OF IT DISTASTEFUL. HE WANTED A JIZZ SHOT AND SHE DIDN'T. IT WAS HER VISION SHE WAS TRYING TO PUT ON SCREEN. IF MR. KRAMER DOESN'T WANT HIS MATERIAL ALTERED, I SUGGEST HE NOT SELL IT.
I WONDER WHAT HE THOUGHT OF THE ALTERED ENDING OF HIS PLAY WHEN IT FINALLY REACHED THE SCREEN?

STFU Perez. She doesn't need to apologize and you are misconstruing what she said. Did you not read the part where she said it was a matter of taste whether the couple was HETERO or HOMOSEXUAL? You hear what you want and look for any reason to slam anyone who doesn't necessarily share your viewpoints. If you want to watch people fucking so bad, watch porn!

You have completely misunderstood what she said. Don't read between lines that aren't there just to stir the pot for your readership. Your particular point about the "33 states" is a blatant misrepresentation of what Ms.
Streisand said and meant, and you damn well know it! Just when I was beginning to like you…

Re: carlystyle – You're missing the point. She doesn't want to omit the love scenes…just make them tasteful as she would also want if it was a heterosexual relationship.
Shooting scenes with semen on sheets for instance doesn't do
    anything to drive home the
message for a right to love. Thankfully that scene was not in
the HBO special. There's tastefulness and there's porn. If you want to reach people's hearts, you choose the former.

I know what a fan you've been of Miss S, but I think you've either misread all this back and forth between Kramer & Streisand, or you've intentionally misrepresented it. I don't think she found the idea of a sex scene distasteful for the adaptation, she found a book that Kramer showed her distasteful. Since no one knows what book he showed her no one knows if it as the content, or the idea. In many ways, as I'm sure is true of yourself, the representation of heterosexual sex a little distasteful, but I don't think it should be kept off the screen, since it certainly isn't. Being fair is part of this. Kramer has always been a a contentious, militant advocate of gay rights and he has been one of the most significant contributors to the health I enjoy now. BUt he's also blind to any contradictions to how he thinks we should ALL think.
